Giardina, Carolyn (17 July 2017). "Gkids, Studio Ghibli Ink Home Entertainment Deal". The Hollywood Reporter . Retrieved 17 July 2017.

But given how significantly Miyazaki’s tastes and personalities in particular came to define Ghibli, it’s easiest to say that the studio’s story started with his immediate family. Miyazaki’s father Katsuji, an aeronautical engineer, was a key influence whose impact has been felt in every one of the animator’s major works. Miyazaki’s father ran a family business, Miyazaki Airplanes, and the director grew up around airline designs and parts. His obsession with the mechanics of flight stretches unmissably through all his films. But it’s particularly visible in Castle in the Sky, where half the action takes place aboard steampunk-ish airships, among fantastical flying devices, and ultimately in and around a flying city. Making the pieces rarer still is the exceptional quality of the selection. Only the most desirable illustrations are chosen; all of the characters have wonderful expressions and are often presented in iconic and immediately recognisable scenes with other characters. The collection is curated by world-renowned art dealer Ari Goldman, who has sold art to the Disney Animation Research Library and advised Christie’s and Sotheby’s. He adds: “These original works are part of the very DNA responsible for the magic of Disney’s global appeal. To me, it is amongst the most inexpensive and under-priced fine art available.”

Official Awards of the 61st Venice Film Festival". labiennale.org/. 11 September 2004. Archived from the original on 9 October 2004. Personally I am very pessimistic," Miyazaki says. "But when, for instance, one of my staff has a baby you can't help but bless them for a good future. Because I can't tell that child, 'Oh, you shouldn't have come into this life.' And yet I know the world is heading in a bad direction. So with those conflicting thoughts in mind, I think about what kind of films I should be making." Miyazaki stated that an attractive aspect of the story of Howl's Moving Castle was the relatively positive light it shed on growing old. [12] When Sophie becomes old as a result of the witch's spell, she also feels more able to speak her mind. According to Miyazaki, old women are only infrequently allowed to dominate the screen as in Howl's Moving Castle, which made it a risky concept. [12] Elizabeth Parsons stated that the film disrupts the stereotype of "aged unattractiveness," when the artificially aged Sophie manages to rescue two attractive men (who come to love her) and to unintentionally end the war in her country. [18] Sophie's actions are those usually associated with grandmothers, such as being kind and nurturing to those around her, and engaging in housework; however, these actions are depicted as being powerful and heroic. [18] Sophie is one of several strong female protagonists in Miyazaki's films. [14] According to Parsons, this gives the film a feminist aspect as well. [18] Additionally, even though Sophie manages to make her presence in the castle legitimate by claiming to be a cleaning lady, the film goes on to show that the housework is equitably distributed, strengthening its feminist aspect. [18]

The above video is just a teaser of a longer Ghibli-inspired Castle Town project that the channel has been working on which will be released on 21st November. According to the video description, work on the animation began as a side project in August, which has since seen 30 individual characters being created in Studio Ghibli's iconic art style. For decades Ghibli was opposed to letting their films stream digitally. Disney tried to broker a streaming deal before its contract ended, but failed. The massively popular Disney Plus streaming service has no evidence that Studio Ghibli was ever a part of the Walt Disney Company. You aren't wrong that if this weren't a Zelda fan project it wouldn't be featured here, and that many creatives make a living producing unauthorised fan works (which is the case with this author, they run a Patreon), but I find that to be a wholly joyless approach to creative works. But producer Harvey Weinstein felt Princess Mononoke should be edited down for a Western audience. In America, animation was for families, and families might not want to sit through a two-hour epic. Miyazaki’s producer Toshio Suzuki, in response, presented Weinstein with a samurai sword and a note: “No cuts.” Spirited Away was the pinnacle of the Ghibli/Disney relationship. Miyazaki’s next three features all got domestic releases through the Walt Disney Company, but because his films were difficult to box into genres recognizable to a country that grew up on Disney animated features, Ghibli’s Stateside releases were wobbly at best. Howl’s Moving Castle, like Spirited Away, was guided in the States by a hand from Pixar: Pete Docter, the Academy-Award winning filmmaker behind Up and Inside Out, served as its executive producer.

While Barbie and Teresa are playing music, Barbie’s sister Stacie storms in, having had a fight with her friend Courtney. Barbie and Teresa tell Stacie a story to teach her the power of friendship. Many creatives start out creating their own fan works of things they are passionate about. In this instance, this creator is passionate of both The Legend of Zelda (particularly Ocarina of Time), and Studio Ghibli films, and wanted to create something that marries these passions. Like with the other Studio Ghibli movies, the film was co-produced with other companies, which were Tokuma Shoten, the Nippon Television Network, Dentsu, Buena Vista Home Entertainment, Mitsubishi and Toho. [29] Comparisons between film and novel [ edit ] A storyboard is a series of sketches which helps filmmakers to visualise a plot sequence by mapping out the story. Identifying inconsistencies or chances for further development, the method is a useful tool for previewing a film before the cameras start rolling. The concept is credited to the animator Webb Smith, who developed the idea at the Walt Disney Studio in the early 1930s. Storyboarding is still used in production today for both animated and live-action feature films.

So not liking it, and telling what I don't like about it is "being harsh"? I disagree. I am honest, and you might not like my honesty.

Studio Ghibli’s legacy can be best summed up in a story that’s become legend. Hayao Miyazaki’s visceral masterpiece Princess Mononoke was scheduled for an unusually wide release in the United States. The Walt Disney Company had the release rights, just as its animation studio was reaching creative and financial highs with the Disney Renaissance. Ghibli should have been rejoicing — the Japanese studio had inspired legions of ardent admirers in other countries, and its creators wanted to break through to a larger audience. animation cleanup / character design assistance / prop design / design assistance / prop designer / animation clean up (32 episodes, 2017-2021)

I've seen hours of great indie-animated content on Youtube and other platforms. Without the need for stealing others' work or names. I find it a joyless approach to creative works if you can't create your own characters, worlds and make awesome videos with them. Mamoru Hosoda of Toei Animation was originally selected to direct the film, but quit the project after Studio Ghibli's executives rejected many of his concept ideas. The film was shelved until Miyazaki took over. [22] The project resumed production in February 2003. [19] It was scheduled to be completed in the spring of 2004, and released in the summer of that year. [22] And yet The Wind Rises garnered strong praise from many critics. Though the biopic was an unexpected choice for the medium of animation, its honest and clear-eyed depiction of the destruction of war, as filtered through the eyes of one of its creators, was bracing to experience in hand-drawn animation. It’s a shame that so few people got to experience it in theaters. But with Disney no longer holding the reins on Ghibli’s American releases, it’s a good time to take a deep dive into the studio’s catalog, possibly starting with strong, ambitious features like The Wind Rises, or earlier Ghibli classics like Spirited Away and My Neighbor Totoro. Miyazaki does not simplify his films for children. In fact, his stories and plots are often complicated, and sometimes even esoteric. Instead of writing the scripts and then adding the animation later – the modern Hollywood way – he focuses on the visual storyboards and then constructs the stories around the images he creates. Miyazaki’s focus on visual storytelling has allowed his imagination free reign. What are his key films?
