About this deal

Since personal preference is largely at play here, we enlisted the help of multiple editors to test 36 different deodorants and antiperspirants. We wore them for 24 hours and exercised to work up a sweat to assess potentially damp and smelly pits to evaluate them for efficacy, texture, scent and odor protection, and transfer-resistance. We also had an expert from our Medical Expert Board read this article for accuracy before we published it. We like that the after-scent of Arm & Hammer Ultra Max is decidedly neutral but crisp, so there isn’t any overpowering fragrance, making it a great choice for all genders. We do have to add that the Cool Blast option sort of made our armpits smell like fresh laundry detergent. Creams: Harder to apply, only need a small amount, product goes further, often contain more skin-soothing ingredients

Deodorants help malodorous body parts smell fresh by depositing a film on the skin," explains Aral. Ingredients in deodorant can fight the bacterial growth that causes sweat to smell bad, but "fragrances can also be designed to mask malodors without trying to stop the bacterial growth," she says. On the other hand, the active ingredients in antiperspirants, like aluminum salts, are designed to prevent sweating. "This decreases the malodor generation of bacteria," Aral says. Since aluminum salts are said to have antimicrobial properties on their own, they can reduce bad odors too. And, while the fragrance from the spray smelled good on-body (light and fresh), the scent did linger in the room for hours after application, which might bother some people. Suitable for use by men and women of all normal (non-hypersensitive) skin types from the age of 6 years to treat excessive or problem sweat and odour. DIRECTIONS FOR USE Many products on the market are a combination of both antiperspirants and deodorants. But it’s important to understand the difference between the two so you can understand how to fix your concerns, whether they’re excessive sweating or bad body odor. Here’s the breakdown:Why We Like It: It leaves out potentially irritating factors, like fragrances and botanical ingredients. There are over the counter antiperspirants, which usually contain 10 to 15 percent aluminum, or “clinical strength” formulas that are more potent. Clinical strength are typically 20+ percent aluminum, such as Dove Clinical Protection Antiperspirant Deodorant. Fragrance-free deodorants mean no chemicals or scents have been used to provide a scent that will mask your body odor. These are typically the best option for people with sensitive skin, as fragrances (even natural ones, like essential oils) can cause a rash or burning sensation for some. There’s nothing worse than trying a new deodorant, only to find that your pits smell terrible only a few hours later. To create this list of best antiperspirants on the market, we asked multiple dermatologists for their best recommendations for formulas that can stand up to the strongest sweat and odor. Additionally, we used our own experience of testing some of these antiperspirants to contribute to the story. We looked for products that smelled great, had long-lasting odor protection, and considered different budgets as well. Dr. Portela usually recommends clinical-strength antiperspirants (which contain active ingredients in higher concentrations than "regular" antiperspirants) as they’re less likely to cause irritation for those with sensitive skin. He also recommends variations of aluminum like Aluminum Zirconium Tetrachlorohydrex instead of traditional Aluminum Chloride, which can be irritating over time.

With aluminum chlorohydrate as the active ingredient, this spray keeps your underarms dry and smelling clean for about 24 hours (however, by the 24-hour mark, we did notice some natural body odor was peaking through). It contains 0% alcohol so it doesn’t burn when applied or cause skin irritation, and the formula contains nurturing oils to help keep your skin hydrated and smooth. It relies on aluminum zirconium tetrachlorohydrex GLY to minimize moisture; even after we went through a day of a brisk workout, sweaty commute, and strength training, our underarms still felt dry and almost entirely odor free. The scent in this deodorant is pleasant but not overly fragrant. We loved the crisp lavender scent, which was feminine without being overpowering or offensive. That scent fades over the course of the day, but then leaves you just with a neutral odor while the sweat-stopping properties kept us dry and smelling fresh for 24 hours. In fact, the brand claims this deodorant offers three times more sweat protection than an ordinary antiperspirant, thanks to the aluminum zirconium tetrachlorohydrex GLY. Some folks have complained that this formula takes a while to dry down. Additionally, some might find the scent to be a bit overpowering—but we think a strong scent is expected when it comes to a clinical-strength antiperspirant.

The active ingredient also earns the approval of a dermatologist we spoke to. “Aluminum Zirconium Tetrachlorohydrex Glycine Complex provides longer lasting antiperspirant action than typical aluminum chloride containing antiperspirants,” explains Dr. Portela. “As a bonus, it’s also great for sensitive skin.” At first, we found the cream consistency to be slightly off-putting. But we noticed that the cream completely dried within a few minutes, and there was no transfer onto our dark clothing. This deodorant will likely become a favorite once you get used to the unique lotion-like consistency.

to 5 stars: These are the best clinical strength deodorants we tested. We recommend them without reservation. To find the best options, our testers put 36 deodorants and antiperspirants to the test. With the oversight of Dr. Joshua Zeichner, the director of cosmetic and clinical research at Mount Sinai Hospital's Department of Dermatology in New York City, testers were advised to do the following:

An Aluminium Free antiperspirant, IXAL, is available from the makers of SweatStop. It contains a patented formula that naturally normalises sweating without sealing the pores of the sweat glands and it works best for people with hyperhidrosis of the underarms. The dermatologically tested roll-on formulation reduces sweating and nourishes the skin.

And we thought the smell was quite strong and unique, like cloves or chai tea, which might or might not be to your taste. Perspi-Guard® Maximum Strength Antiperspirant Wipes is an exceptionally effective solution to excessive sweating. In addition to ensuring complete protection from both sweat and odour, it is also remarkably gentle on the skin. PERFECT FOR WHEN YOU NEED TO TRAVEL LIGHT Unlike other scented deodorants we tested, this one didn't have an overbearing artificial smell. The fragrance is slightly citrusy and botanica but it's not trying too hard to be overly floral or fruity. When we first applied the deodorant, we noticed the scent, but as it dried on our skin, it became more subdued. Even after working out, the scent was still there but not overpowering.
