It’s not something men think about very often. Or ever. What it’s like to walk through a parking garage by yourself. Or to the store across the street at night. #NotAllMen sprang forth because all men didn’t want to be lumped together as pigs, as rapists, as assholes and douchebags who think they can treat a woman any damn way they please. This is the story of five men, all of whom have been the victim of an anonymous serial rapist known as Maude. It is the story of how the media handles rape, and how society handles rape. How we speak about it, how we shame, how we lay blame. It’s about the questions we ask, how we ask them and the assumptions we make. How we try to make ourselves feel more comfortable in the presence of someone else’s trauma. How the survivors grapple with their new reality, and their upended perception of themselves, their relationships, their bodies and the world around them. She describes the molded-plastic gloves her physical therapist made for both arms, ones which would immobilize her thumbs, so she could no longer type. At six months’ pregnant, she lay down, still, and wrote the rest of the book in her head. “It was a form of torture,” she says, shaking her head. year-old Michael Parker of Shelburne, Vermont, is the latest victim in a string of unsolved violent sexual crimes by a female perpetrator -BuzzFeed Tamblyn is a published author and cultural critic at large. She has published seven books across genres, and writes for The New York Times and other publications on issues of gender inequality and women's rage.

Tamblyn's first novel, Any Man, [26] was released June 2018. Its plot centers on a serial female rapist who preys on men. Her second book, a memoir and feminist manifesto titled Era of Ignition, [27] was released in March 2019. The book is a personal exploration of feminism during divisive times. It’s ironic that this character would then go on to be raped. What are feminists taking a stance against? Well, the way this character (and those before and after him) are treated after his rape, for one.

Good evening, I’m your host, Melissa Hope and thank you for joining me on BCN’s number-one primetime television talk show The Melissa Hope Hour… [Guests], what do you make of these specific cases and the controversial circumstances surrounding how, in particular, they occurred? Ten years ago, I was having a beer with a friend after work and a few hours later, I was violently assaulted and left for dead behind a dumpster. No, worse—I was left for living. My assaulter wanted me to live through what I had experienced. It was a gesture of torture, a most excruciating gift. There is a poignant moment in one of the scenes where men are in a bar, sitting around joking about the victims, and then a woman walks in and the men push their alcoholic drinks away and instead sip at their water. Knowing. Scared of this random woman. Mizoguchi, Karen (March 13, 2017). "Amber Tamblyn Reveals Her Daughter's Name Is Marlow Alice — and the Announcement Involves Hillary Clinton". People . Retrieved March 14, 2017. any man is an incisive, poetic, and brutal account of sexual trauma (both individual and collective) and its aftermath. it's about an unknown serial rapist named maude, and several of the men whom she hurts. maude herself is a mysterious figure, because her individual motivations are less important than the toxic rape culture which plagues survivors.Just like for women, our “Maude” could be any man who walks into a bar. Any man we pass on the street. Any man we ride in an elevator with. It's not all men, but it's enough of them. It's not all men, but we have no way of knowing which men it is. Hetero women are the only species who need to mate with our only known predator. You know, what I mean? I know for a fact I won't stop thinking about this book for a long time. It does what good fiction is meant to do: challenges me to re-consider my views, my responses, my gut reactions through creative, fresh prose and storytelling. one thing i find odd is the inclusion of a trans man who is a victim of maude, but whose story is glossed over. we discover via tweets that he survives her assault and later kills himself. he is the only survivor who never tells any part of his story firsthand. i definitely see the value of including some discussion of transphobia within rape culture, but why is this character the least fleshed out of all? Yandoli, Krystie Lee (March 5, 2019). "Amber Tamblyn Isn't Voting For Bernie Sanders In The Primary Because She's Excited About The Women Candidates". BuzzFeed News. It’s ironic that this character would then go on to be raped and have feminists rally around him, even though he's spent years demonizing them. It's the difference between living your life with actual principles and living your life based on hatred.

While this book does come with a pretty big trigger warning - Maude's crimes are abhorrent and rival those of Josef Fritzl in sheer sociopathy - Tamblyn thankfully avoids describing the assaults in great detail. She takes great care to remain respectful of the victims - who are fictional, yes, but represent the millions of women and men who will experience rape in their lifetime. The story is told through an odd mix of narrative, stream-of-consciousness, poetry, personal diaries, talk show transcripts, podcasts, tweets, and even a last will and testament. Sometimes these various pieces of media have a special significance to a specific survivor, providing depth, nuance, and a sense of uniqueness to his voice and perspective. The result is weird, at first, but ultimately quite powerful and compelling. And can we talk about Maude's last two victims? By introducing Sebastian White - an outspoken, ultra-conservative gay pundit clearly modeled after Milo Yiannopoulos - Tamblyn challenges us to have compassion for all victims, even those who are unlikable and, let's face it, overtly hostile to Tamblyn's intended audience. Meanwhile, Michael Parker serves as a reminder that we must be inclusive in our feminism, and take trans and genderqueer folks as they are. While the media insists in misgendering Michael, make no mistake: he was a man, no matter the gender assigned or name given him at birth. Maude seemed to accept this; do you really want to be less progressive than a serial rapist? Agreed. I follow this account on Insta called GodlessMom and she posted something the other day of a post someone had made describing how her “atheist neighbour” sold something at a garage sale that her daughter wanted to buy but didn’t have money for. So she encouraged her young daughter to pray that god would handle it and some days later the neighbour’s house was burglarized. This woman was like, “I just look at my daughter and we smiled because we knew god was on our side.” LIKE WHAT? You’re happy someone experienced misfortune because you think it was punishment from god? Like they were happy about someone’s downfall, and I think that’s the part of religion I don’t like. They truly believe they are better than other people. The idea of “love your neighbour as yourself” and the golden rule is bullshit. Hardly any of the follow it. They enjoy feeling superior, they enjoy other people being experiencing hardships. It’s the most un-Christ-like behaviour I’ve ever seen and none of them recognize it. Very few are genuinely good people who show respect and kindness and love to people, especially those who are different from them. But my mom is an exception lol. Jennifer: Listen, no one deserves to be the victim of a sexual assault, but doesn’t this bring up another issue… I mean, shouldn’t people engage in some kind of behaviour so as not to put themselves in a vulnerable position?

Listen, I’m just making a point. I have no real issue with this. Obviously. I do think books and shows, done with good intention, are an extra source of light to shine on the issues women face. I think that’s important – showing we are not alone in our experiences. Can a man be raped? Some say not possible.
