Getting precise measurements is essential for many projects, even ones as simple as hanging art or estimating how much wallpaper will be necessary for a specific room. We liked the ability to measure up to 65 feet at the push of a button. We loaded two AAA batteries (included) in the Bosch and started testing. This no-frills digital tape measure is as simple as it gets—we pushed the button on the front to turn the unit on and then pressed the button again when we were ready to measure. Short tapes may also feature a metallic belt clipto attach the tape onto the user’s belt. Some long tapes might also feature belt clips but this is generally reserved only for the shorter, more lightweight varieties. What type of tape should I be looking for? Our testers then evaluated every tape measure for standout, which is the distance the unsupported, extended blade of the tool can remain rigid before bending towards the floor. Each tape measure was extended to its full length while the tester held it at various angles and noted the point at which the tape measure could no longer remain straight.

Grade C - Acceptable. The item will show signs of extended use including scratches, dents and scuffs.Tape measures aren’t designed for constant in-hand use, so they’re not the most comfortable hand tools to grasp. Fortunately, they don’t require a firm grip to use, so they’re usually not too cumbersome.

Most commonly, tape measures have numerals for inches and feet, and small lines to indicate fractions of inches. There are some, however, including the Milwaukee Compact Tape Measure, that actually indicate the fractions with numerals rather than lines, which can be much easier to read. All of the metal tapes were tested for standout length, or the length to which it could be extended in the air before it bent. The ones with greater standout lengths received more points. As for the blade width, around 1 inch is best. Thinner than that, and the blade can be flimsy. Wider, and you may find the tape measure too bulky or difficult to retract. The fibreglass blade is extremely resistant to damage from stretching, ripping, excessive heat or water. For surveyors or builders, select high-tech digital measuring tools that also come with Bluetooth connectivity for sharing measurements to iOS and Android smartphone apps or for saving on tablets and laptops. FAQsThe metal tip of a cased tape measure is called the hook or the tang. The hook lets you “catch” the end of the tape measure in place to keep it steady while you extend it. A good hook is large enough to hold in place when required, but not so large that it catches where you don’t want it to. Additionally, hooks with upright points are more likely to catch on items other than what you are measuring. Bob Vila has been America’s Handyman since 1979. As the host of beloved and groundbreaking TV series including “This Old House” and “Bob Vila’s Home Again,” he popularized and became synonymous with “do-it-yourself” home improvement. Standout blade. The tape itself—known as the blade—should stay straight and firm when extended in the air. Cheap blades bend easily, denting and dipping in places. Quality blades, made of steel or fiberglass, should literally “stand out” for 6 feet or farther before bending. Metal blades coated with nylon are highly durable and versatile.
