The main reason for these sizes, aside form the growth of the baby, is the fact that newborns cannot keep up with the flow of milk as fast as a baby who is six months old. Just to showcase how much flow rate varies by manufacturer, here is a guide to some of the bigger brands teat flows. So if you’re noticing a sudden change in your baby’s behaviour then you should cycle through the usual possibilities – growth spurt, developmental leap, sleep regression, teething– and add bottle flow rate to the list!

The Medium Flow teat (with the number 3 on the teat) is recommended for babies of 3+ months old. It has an extra soft silicone teat.This is because the rate at which your baby feeds is a direct indicator of how much he or she is drinking

Infants who are one to three months old and who are also still breastfeeding should go for the next size up, which is the Slow Flow nipple. This nipple has two holes. Finally, babies who are six months old and older generally finish the bottle between ten and twenty minutes. For instance, if you see milk running down your child’s face, this could be an indication of too fast of a flow through the nipple.
