Game overview: you have 60 seconds to memorise the position of twelve symbol tiles; the symbols constantly swap and change positions; you have to find symbols, name them, swap them or test other players; the winner is the last player left in the game.

Finally, there’s just a subtle change in the rules. It used to be the case that two players could occupy the same square on the Baffled board. By the new version this has changed so that if the square you should land on is already occupied you’re supposed to advance to the next un-occupied square. Is this to accommodate the new larger playing pieces? Or a tweak for some other reason. Baffled twice The apology – notwithstanding the continuing racism in the AFL – was long overdue. That it made a virtue of apparently linking Marn Grook to the code has surprised many, because the AFL has in recent years steadfastly adhered to the documentary research of (mostly non-Indigenous) historians of the game. You probably won’t want to play a second game straight away as you will still be remembering the positions of the symbols from the end of the previous game. This award-winning game includes a board about the size of a Monopoly board; 12 symbol tokens and lids to cover them; life cards so you can keep a close eye on how many lives your opponents have too; plus a Baffled dice. This version of Baffled was published in 1991 by Spear’s Games. I know that board games over the years become somewhat recycled, but normally a search on the bible of board games (AKA Board Game Geek) shows this up, but in this case Baffled was only listed there as having been published by Cheatwell in 2018. Baffled – the similarities For Australian football’s 150th anniversary in 2008, the AFL commissioned a book, The Australian Game of Football Since 1858. It included a remarkably strident chapter by AFL historian Gillian Hibbins. She labelled any claimed link between Marn Grook and Australian football a “seductive myth”. You have 60 seconds to memorise the positions of the symbols but no timing device is provided. You could use a watch (does anyone still wear one?) or a phone stopwatch. You might want to ask everyone to be silent during this 60 seconds so no one is distracted. I blame my poor performance on my daughter bellowing a Jason Donovan song in my ear. How to Cope with Boredom and Loneliness joins the crowded 'create your own documentary simulator' market but we hope to stand out with a touching story and memorable characters. Features The box contains the playing board, 12 symbol tiles, 12 covering pieces, 4 elephant playing counters, 28 life cards and dice. The 12 symbol tiles include 3 blue tiles, 3 green tiles, 3 yellow tiles and 3 red tiles. These feature four number tiles (1, 2, 3 and 4), four animal tiles (Dolphin, Fr og, Ladybird and Lion) and four fruit tiles ( Plum, Apple, Strawberry and Lemon).

But what do you actually have to do? I hear you ask. Well – that bit is relatively simple. In theory at least. The next thing to consider when choosing toys for children is what do we want them to learn? Do we want them to learn about animals? About colors? About counting? These are all important topics that you may want your child exposed to from an early age so that they can begin learning about these things before school starts and continue learning throughout the year. Educational toys play a big role in this, as they keep on introducing and nurturing children with educational topics, their surroundings, life skills and many more. There is some documentary suggestion that Wills, as a boy, was probably exposed to Marn Grook in Victoria’s western districts in the 1830s and 40s, where he was the only white child. But there is nothing in his personal or family archive to suggest that the game he was largely responsible for codifying (based, he said, on a variation of rugby, which he played when he was educated from 14 at England’s Rugby Sschool) was consciously influenced by Marn Grook or that he’d seen or played the Indigenous game as a kid. The contestation of the Australian historiographical space especially in relation to dispossession, white land grabs and widespread massacres, underscores tensions between the documentary (which has downplayed injustice, violence and cultural appropriation) and the veracity of Indigenous means of recording the past. Many crimes against Aboriginal people, much appropriation of their culture and property, was not documented – yet we know by other means what happened.I always find it fascinating to compare different versions of the same game as I love discovering what changes have been made over time and trying to work out if the changes are for the better or not. In this case it seems that design is the main driving factor for the changes in Cheatwell’s version and I can see that as a good thing. The fact that the game itself has not changed suggests that it’s a pretty good game to start with. At the start of the game the symbol tiles are all covered up and placed around the inner square. They are then revealed to players who have 60 seconds to try to memorise where they all are. That doesn’t sound too difficult to start with. Play

On the whole the game of Baffled hasn’t really changed between the two versions. You still play in the same way with four players each trying to be the one to stay in longest by memorising the positions of 12 different symbols around the board. You can decide at the start of the game as to how many “lives” each player has and as you work your way around the board the things you are asked to do remain exactly the same in terms of which positions have to swap and which combinations of positions you have to name the symbols at. Baffled – the differencesThere are so many things to love about Baffled! A big factor in my admiration for it is how refreshingly simple it is to play and learn. Lots of truly amazing games with lots of depth are great fun to play but require lots of homework and an equally 'read-up' and captivated group of players to enjoy. This simply isn't the case with Baffled; while the strategic depth is still there, none of the extensive rules or difficult introductions are. Another honourable mention has to be Baffled's application of memory into the game, which makes it unique since it's not something you see an awful lot in board games today. It's really nice to be able to play with such an interactive and tangible mechanic as this – it keeps the game fresh and means the player is always involved. What Could Be Better? When you're shopping educational toys for your child, the first thing to consider is the age of the toy. Educational toys should be age appropriate, otherwise they will not be helpful in developing skills or learning concepts. As is fast becoming our measure of whether a family board game is good or not, discussion soon turned to whether my mum would enjoy the game. We’re pretty sure she would, but there’s also an edge of fear as we know what a good memory and eye for detail she can have! Baffled – the facts For example, if a child wants to play with cars but can't yet reach them without climbing up on furniture or standing on boxes, then consider purchasing an attachment that allows them to play with cars without having to stand up or climb up things. I’m sorry but what is the purpose of this absolutely pointless game that is happening right now? The producers could’ve literally given us anything else - behind the scenes footage anyone?," @funkymonkeeee wrote.
