Hadley is Merliah's other best friend (played by Teresa). She's prone to daydream. She is imaginative, funny and silly. Her personality makes her the first one to believe that Merliah is half-mermaid.

He is the one who raised Merliah and told her about her past. The surfer before Merliah in the beginning has red hair and wears a purple top with green shorts. This may be a reference to the mermaid Ariel from Disney's The Little Mermaid. Calissa is the Queen of the underwater kingdom of Oceana. Calissa and her sister, Eris, don't have a good relationship. Eris is jealous of her because Calissa rules the kingdom and can make Merillia. When Calissa was young, she was chosen to take part in the Changing of the tides Ceremony, and she gained the power to make Merillia. A few years later, she met an unusual human named Rip. They fell in love and secretly married. Calissa gave birth to Merliah, who was half human and half mermaid. There are puns on store names in Oceana: Bloomingtails, a pun on Bloomingdales; Seaphora, a pun on Sephora; and Fred Seagull, a pun on Fred Segal.The Destinies are three girls named Dee, Deanne and Deandra who own a hair salon and can also see the future. They tell Merliah the three tools she needs to defeat Eris and restore Oceana.

Zuma is a pink bottlenose dolphin who shows Merliah around the ocean kingdom and helps her save Calissa. Calissa is Merliah's mother. She was the Queen regnant of Oceana, until her evil younger sister, Eris, stole the throne from her. In the Barbie: Life in the Dreamhouse episode "Party Foul", Nikki has a tail very similar to Calissa's. Kayla and Xylie are best friends and super-stylish mermaids. They own a luxurious boutique under the sea where Merliah gets a mermaid makeover.In Barbie: A Fashion Fairytale, Barbie has a Barbie in A Mermaid Tale poster in her trailer gallery. On the way to Oceana, Zuma explains that the ocean is weakening due to Eris being unskilled at spinning Merillia—a magical substance that sustains the ocean. Merliah and Zuma sneak into Oceana during an Eris festival, wherein Eris distributes Merillia in exchange for the citizens' adoration. In reality, the Merillia is spun by Calissa, who is imprisoned in the palace dungeon. Kylie is jealous of Merliah and snubs Merliah and her friends, even if they are nice. This was because of her defensive and catty attitude at the beginning of the movie. In the end, she becomes Merliah's friend and wins 1st place in the World Surfing Championship because Merliah permitted her to win after discovering that she could make Merillia. But after that, Kylie decided to share the prize with Merliah. Kylie starts to change after she is saved by Merliah and Snouts from Eris's whirlpool.

Barbie in A Mermaid Tale was the top-selling Barbie movie in 2010. It was the first Barbie film/movie released in the spring that outsold the one released in the fall ( Barbie: A Fashion Fairytale).Calissa and Merliah are playing cards. Calissa asks for any threes but Merliah says "Nope, Go Human" (It's a reference to "Go Fish"). Queen Calissa is a brave, charismatic, smart, strong, and fair mermaid. She is kind and calm. She rules the kingdom with love. She tends to be very serious about her kingdom, telling Merliah she must come to the Changing of the Tides Ceremony. Calissa is also a very loving mother.

Zuma and Snouts try on some accessories. Zuma says "Snouts and I are stepping out" but Zuma hits herself through a wall. In the storybook, she has the same hairstyle as Queen Isabella from Barbie: Princess Charm School. Her hairstyle is also similar to Melody's and Queen Lorelei's. In Barbie: A Fairy Secret, Barbie and Raquelle use fake wings in Gloss Angeles, and Merliah uses a fake tail in Oceana. That’s where Mermaid Tale 2 really shines. Yes, Merliah is thrilled to reconnect with her mother and find out more about being a mermaid, but also, she is still a human. She has legs and she lives on land. She doesn’t understand how important the sacred traditions of mermaid culture are, but at the same time, her mother doesn’t get how important this one surf competition is to her. The movie plays out like a fantastical allegory for a second-generation immigrant story, where both sides must work to understand each other. So many of those stories focus on the revelation, and end before interrogating what happens after. There should be an inherent cultural clash in spending your whole life as an ordinary human, only to find out that — surprise! — you’re actually part mythological being.
