At one of the main award ceremonies in hospitality for operators we noticed that only 20% of the finalists were women and yet 50% of the awards went to women. Furthermore, when we looked at the promotions post the awards, women enjoyed very few promotions and all of them had left the business to gain the promotion. Having experienced a successful career progression journey myself and the challenges that it brought, you could say…I’ve been there, done that and got the t-shirt! After I returned to the U.K in 2014, I worked in senior positions for two successful businesses in Edinburgh whilst pursuing my career in coaching. During this time, I learnt vital skills in business management which assist me as a Coach. Furthermore, I discovered how to be successful in work, whilst being happy and healthy. Coaching has helped me realise what is important to me, how to create clear goals and live focussed on them. I founded Be Brilliant Life Coaching in 2017 and it is growing strength to strength year on year.

I guess you do learn in the sense of what people respond to, and what they don’t respond to. So you become better and more experienced at how to mentor and manage people well. It’s a part of being a scientist that doesn’t usually get recognized, but it is something that I value. To be eligible to apply, you must be an educator in a classroom and able to verify your education status. The educator account will be valid for 2 years. It doesn’t have to be on the scale of solving world hunger. It can be finding a new route that skips traffic or a better way to save money. Every mistake offers you an opportunity to learn, grow and be a better version of yourself. And when you learn from your mistake, it does not remain a mistake anymore. Every situation, no matter how grim it looks or sad it sounds can be used to your advantage.

I will add here though, you do need to be 13 or older to have your own Brilliant account.We’re at the assembly phase in the Human Cell Atlas initiative, which is mapping all cells in the human body using genomics technologies. We can now integrate distributed systems like immunity, vasculature, the musculoskeletal system and so on, across the body. It’s like the phase in the Human Genome Project where the chromosomes were beginning to be assembled from the contigs to make the golden path of the genome sequence. It’s great fun, because there’s so much novelty to discover. We’re also starting to see the translational potential of the work, which is equally exciting.
