About this deal

Benjamin A. Foster (born October 29, 1980) [1] is an American actor. He has had roles in films including The Punisher (2004), X-Men: The Last Stand and Alpha Dog (both 2006), The Messenger and Pandorum (both 2009), [2] The Mechanic (2011), Contraband (2012), Kill Your Darlings and Lone Survivor (both 2013), The Program (2015), and Leave No Trace (2018). He was nominated for a Saturn Award and a Satellite Award for his role in 3:10 to Yuma (2007) [3] and won an Independent Spirit Award for portraying Tanner Howard in Hell or High Water (2016). [4] He also acted as Russell Corwin in Six Feet Under (2003–2005). He had a recurring role portraying a high school student named Eli on the Judd Apatow show, Freaks and Geeks (2000), which ran for one season. When we first discussed portraying three seasons of Harry’s life, one producer suggested that digital effects could solve the problem of Harry’s physical transformation. I was told these new effects could make me appear young and old, emaciated and round. I told them that, if this was their approach of the film, they had the wrong actor. I knew that if I was to take on this role, I had to drop and gain the weight make the physical transformation myself. Most people don’t have a choice to go hungry. When I’m asked if it was hard, I say choice is a luxury. The joy of Foster’s work in the romance field is his ability to play notably dialed-down characters, telling the emotional components of the film’s story in the most nuanced of ways (facial expressions and body language, most especially). Such characteristics can be seen most clearly in a film like Here, a hauntingly beautiful love story that leaves a ton open to interpretation, giving way to a luminous relationship between Foster and Azabal’s characters. Hostiles Image Credit: Entertainment Studios Motion Pictures. Nominated— Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series (2005) Most of the criticism of the movie was aimed at its writer/director, Scott Cooper. William Bibbiani of IGN said that Cooper wasted the talent of its actors and cinematographer in a "by-the-numbers storyline with a rather obvious message about how it's harder to be despicable to people after you get to know them". He went on to say, "Scott Cooper directs Hostiles with an eye for 'greatness' but the actual material simply isn't deep enough to justify the solemn presentation. It's not entertaining, it's not illuminating, it's not even complicated. It's mostly just a bummer". [21]

Westal, Bob. "A Roundtable Chat with Ben Foster of Mechanic". Bullz-Eye . Retrieved 17 November 2022. What Harry went through, there’s no easy answer here. He survived and he did it for love, and he wanted to see his loved one, the girl he loved. It’s interesting, I listened to hours of Holocaust testimonies, and there was a through line. My father was a lawyer at one point. I'm a ninth grade dropout, but what I've heard is that studying for the bar, you're going to lose your mind. It doesn't mean you're not going to recover it, but a part of the job is pushing yourself the way that an athlete will push themselves or a musician will keep pushing themselves. That's part of the pleasure, is pushing to your limits to find your limits. It's not masochism—it's much more an investigation of, I want to know how far I can go and keep fighting. And there are moments where you begin to drift. And I suppose that's part of the spark of the film is where does a human’s will exist when they're depleted, when they're denied sustenance. So this is the work that I love, it's to find your own edges, and in those edges, you find the character and hopefully that investment translates for an audience. Ordona, Michael (November 1, 2009). The Messenger

Though Lone Survivor has a tendency to dovetail into mindless action now and again, the film does a mostly great job highlighting the bravery and heroism of Operation Red Wings’ chief combatants. As the real-life SEAL Matthew “Axe” Axelson, Foster judiciously brings his historical counterpart to the big screen, emphasizing Axe’s foremost qualities, including his sense of duty, loyalty, and unwavering fearlessness till the very end. Galveston Image Credit: RLJE Films. After filming of the movie Here ended, five members of the cast and crew got tattooed with the letters T.I.A., which stand for This Is Armenia. [36] In the time that we’re representing the art form, Harry is not what you would call the most refined boxer, more of a survival brawler, and I took much joy. Even last night, I was going into a spiral, I returned to these 40s boxers. I haven’t been able to shake Harry.”

The reason is simple: he deeply, passionately hates Indians, having fought them frequently and been the target of their violence. One reason the story gets off to a strong start is Christian Bale’s effectiveness in conveying this character’s bitterness and anger. Though his mouth is largely covered by a droopy handlebar moustache, Bale’s fierce eyes radiate looks that are at once haunted and haunting, reflecting years of pain and rage. I immediately became self-conscious. If you’ve just fallen down a mountain your teeth probably don’t look like that, so I just grabbed some dirt and put it in my mouth and the director caught me. It felt like you probably catch some in your mouth on the way down a mountain. It wasn’t that thoughtful, nor was it that impressive; it was actually unimpressive.Collura, Scott (December 4, 2013). From his roles as traumatized war veterans to scene-stealing career criminals, here are Ben Foster’s best movies to date, ranked from best to worst. Hell or High Water Image Credit: Lionsgate. Reuniting with Chris Pine after their earlier, far better Hell or High Water, The Finest Hours is a fairly conventional film overall, documenting the Coast Guard’s incredible efforts in the 1952 nor’easter. As mediocre as the movie itself is, the movie’s cast does a remarkable job playing each of their respective characters, with Foster delighting as the skilled seaman, Richard P. Livesey. Rampart Image Credit: Millennium Entertainment. Foster’s overall filmography may be small, but his array of wholly unique performances proves just how talented and versatile an actor he truly is. At only 40, he’s destined to go on wowing audience members in each cinematic role he challenges himself with, constructing complex, three-dimensional characters from any script he’s given.

As Crowe’s on-screen lieutenant – the charming sociopath Charlie Prince – Foster hands in what is easily the best performance of his early career. Invoking an inherent sense of loyalty above all else (perhaps to the point of a closeted romantic interest), Foster’s Prince is amusing and charismatic one moment, and nearly demonic in his anger and homicidal outbursts in the next. The Messenger Image Credit: Sony Pictures Releasing. Born in Boston, he took up acting as teenager and made his mark, often brooding and mercurial, in films such as Alpha Dog, 3:10 To Yuma, The Messenger, Leave No Trace and Hell or High Water.
