About this deal

When herons are spooked they have a habit of vomiting as a defence. Half-digested pieces of eel and water vole skull on your head is not a good look. Just so you know.' That’s the intention. It’s maybe not for the hardcore birder. It’s more for someone who doesn’t really think about birds, yet if something catches their eye, wherever they are in Britain, that bird will be in the book. The 1950s-set drama continues. Mr Wantage has been sexually harassing nanny Chantrelle since she started working in his home; when things come to a head on his birthday, Leah embarks on a frantic road trip to help. But why does designated driver Hosanna want to make a detour? Graeme Virtue Time 9pm, BBC One

For his own wildlife conservation efforts,Baileyhas a carnivorous plant named after him. The "Nepenthes Bill Bailey"is a tropical pitcher plant.

Dictator, Marxist, owner of skinny legs… whatever you want to say about Fidel Castro, you will probably find more evidence for those things than him being a birder, despite this being another generally accepted truth. The closest thing I can find is that he once met Ted Parker, a great ornithologist whose life was cut short. Agatha Christie Bailey has been performing regularly in New Zealand since 1996 on his Space Jam tour. In the more than 20 years since, he has returned often, performing Bewilderness; Part Troll; Tinselworm; Dandelion Mind; Qualmpeddler; Limboland. He was last here for hissold-out 2016 tour Larks in Transit.

Walking into Bill Bailey’s studio feels a bit like walking into Bill Bailey’s mind. It occupies the ground floor of a townhouse in Hammersmith, the kind of residential building where you would expect to find a young family, rather than the nerve centre of one of Britain’s best-loved entertainers. We saw recent polar bear footprints, but no bears. We did see an Arctic fox, and lots of birds were starting to arrive, as it was getting into late spring.

The celebrity birders we have some evidence of…

I’ve bunched these three together as they all appeared on Bill Bailey’s Sky 1 TV show as mentioned above, and can be seen on the RSPB blog in photos. PHIL LIGGETT As Bailey tells it, the goose, still covered by the blanket, lifted its head until an outline of itsbeak was level with the gun. This is a beginners guide more than anything else, Bill recommends starting bird-watching by try to find a pigeon, so if you know anybody showing an interest in birds then this will be a great gift for them. My youngest daughter is going to read this next and I think she’ll enjoy it mainly because of the interesting gruesome facts included, a bit like the horrible histories books. Bailey takes us on a journey around the British Isles, zooming in on those birds that enthuse him the most. Whether it's what they eat, where they fly to or how they communicate, these birds are always fascinating, and he introduces us to their weird and wonderful ways in a manner that is always entertaining. The multi-instrumentalist from The Doves features in The Bird Effect, a film about how birds affect and inspire people. Not sure if the band name came before or after the passion for our feathered friends, but it’s an apt one anyway! Bill Bailey

As you know I am a birder. So I thought you might have fun seeing what Audubon is up to – letting birds loose on the Internet.

Average Customer Reviews

I'm trying to build into the show a part on identifying New Zealand native birds, sort of a quiz, so start mugging up now on your bird calls." They're not dressed in any recognisable uniform, they just look like a bunch of blokes on a night out in jeans and T-shirts with guns and pistols armed to the teeth." There are parts of Central Sulawesi where you can just head off into the national parks, where very few people go. Sumatra, too, has some amazing parts, with Gunung Leuser National Park at its centre, one of the few places in Indonesia where working elephants still help to build bridges. It’s amazing to see. The lead singer of Elbow reportedly prefers binoculars that have a self-steadying feature, on account of the shakes he gets. Random fact: he features in a song called “ Murder of Birds“. Rory McGrath Over the last few years, I have become increasingly interested in birds. I have not yet reached the status of fully-fledged twitcher, but I have approached the edge of the nest a few times and come close to leaving. One indication of this is the fact that the most exciting thing to happen to me for a long time was when, recently, a group of 8 Waxwings, not seen in my area since 2013, decided to land in the tree outside the front of my house. For a couple of days, until they moved on, my house was the centre of North Wiltshire’s, well, Swindon's, bird-watching community with twitchers standing around the front of my house pointing their binoculars and huge telephoto lenses at the tree containing the birds. I was there with both binoculars and large telephoto lens! Here is one of my pictures:

Together, as Bailey recalls, they spent many nights drinking cider and listening to The Cure and Echo and the Bunnymen play at a nightclub in Bath. The thing is we have a lot of animals in the house, lots and lots. It's gotten a bit out of hand, we found mates for some of them –pals –and now we have dozens and dozens of the things," he says. Weirdly I didn't watch the match because I was at the zookeeper's symposium. We were out on the terrace of the Palace of Westminster, watching a cormorant eating an eel –an extraordinary sight. It was all very nice and civilised butevery time England scored you could hear the muffled cry somewhere." Yes. Last year I walked The Ridgeway, which is the oldest road in Europe. It runs from near Tring in Hertfordshire down to the Avebury stone circle. It’s brilliant and has become one of my favourite routes. I often go up there now on the train to do a couple of sections.

More historical birders (thanks to Lee for the suggestion!)

Music was his first love. As a child, Bailey discovered he had perfect pitch. He played piano at home and studied music at school and at the London College of Music. I’ve just done a tour of Europe and got a glimpse of the future. When I’m in the EU and travelling with all my kit, I breeze in and out. But going between [non-EU] Norway and the Netherlands, I had to declare everything. There’s all the extra queues and paperwork. This is what we’ve got to look forward to. The ice was starting to melt but it was still cold enough to ride across Arctic glaciers and frozen rivers on a snowmobile.
