Automatically populated lens data from electronic Micro Four Thirds lenses. Automatic recording of camera settings and slate data such as project, scene number, take and specialnotes. Controls Josh’s comments provide an excellent alternative view to my hybrid-shooting-based video capture approach. I recognize and respect the traditional cinematographer approach to designing the BMPCC 6K G2, yet I’m aware of the competition this camera faces and the two of us discussed the cine-focus feature set in an era where autofocus is increasingly important. The benefit in image quality is a no-brainer. 4K footage downsampled to Full HD looks richer than native Full HD footage and the principle stands with 6K capture downsampled to 4K footage. Naturally, with 8K on the horizon and several TVs sporting the resolution expected in the near future, 6K capture will also look better than 4K capture when scaled up, so there’s an element of future-proofing involved as well.

The other issue in Raw is the usually massive file sizes. However, the 6K Pro allows you to select different compression levels for its Raw files from 3:1 right down to 12:1 if you keep the bitrate constant, or four quality levels from Q0 to Q4 if you want consistent quality. Either way, this offers a balancing act between file size and quality. Shoot in 6K and even the most compressed files give stunning resolution. At 6K you can get around an hour of recording time on a 256GB card. While the in-software stabilization of footage from the BMPCC is excellent, as with many of the top-end software-stabilized options out there, it’s impossible to know what the crop will look like until stabilization is complete.

There is no hot or cold shoe built into the camera, which is a bit unfortunate as that’s a common rigging point for mics and external monitors (although the rear LCD is wonderfully large and mitigates the need for an external monitor in many cases). Iris wheel and touchscreen slider for manual iris adjustment on electronically controllable lenses, irisbutton for instant auto iris settings on compatiblelenses. Screen DimensionsIts price made it an excellent choice for students, new cinematographers, and users of higher-end gear that needed a b-camera or crash camera. However, it was not known for its robust feature set or durability (and it would very easily overheat), but it did everything you could need at that price and did it with a fantastic menu system to boot. Recording 4K or lower in ProRes gives edit-ready files that are easier to handle, and usually save on space compared to Raw. But with a choice of different compression levels, some of the more robust 10-bit ProRes files are actually bigger than some of the 12-bit B-Raw files. The BMPCC is an extremely versatile camera with incredible picture quality. What you get out of the camera is the raw ingredients that when cooked in Davinci Resolve (full studio license included) produces amazing imagery. The 6K BRAW file format is what I shoot almost everything in as it captures the best resolution and picture that this camera can produce. The file sizes, although large, when you realise what it's captured (i.e. RAW at 6K) is quite impressive. I capture to the Samsung T5 2Tb SSD which has no problem. As a test I left it recording for 3 hours and that captured approx 600Gb.
