About this deal

Well, not all coppers, obviously. Harper’s depressing exposé of the fall of the Met reveals some who do their jobs competently, uphold the law and tear their hair out at the practices of colleagues, watch as their diligence is undermined by the criminality and incompetence of many they work with.

The competition is open to residents of the United Kingdom aged 18 years or over except employees of BOOKS etc. Ltd and their close relatives and anyone otherwise connected with the organisation or judging of the competition. What we were doing had been company policy since we joined News International. We were taught how to do it by people who already worked there. And everyone knew about it. Scotland Yard seemed to know about it for years and didn’t think it was a problem. Everything we exposed was in the public interest. A searing account of corruption, racism and mismanagement inside Britain’s most famous police force, Broken Yard byTom Harper is ‘the most authoritative critique of British policing in years’. Here, we ask Tom a couple of questions to give you a flavour of the book. He told the police: “Crappy governance is not a crime. The downstream effects of a prosecution would be apocalyptic. The US authorities’ reaction would put the whole business at risk, as licences would be at risk.” Barely a week goes by without the Metropolitan Police Service plunging into a new crisis. Harper’s work is meticulous. He has sourced transcripts and police files, court reports and off-the-record briefings. He has spoken with straight and bent coppers and criminals. This means while we have heard the stories before, Harper offers an insiders’ angle, and it is revelatory in its findings. A phone operator then decided to record the incident as ‘no crime’, a move that improperly boosted police statistics. The Eatons were furious. And when a scene-of-crime officer did eventually pay them a cursory visit, some 48 hours later, he refused to review clear CCTV footage identifying the offender — he refused to take it. How did we reach this squalid malais? Who is to blame? And can it be fixed? Harper, who has a forensic eye for detail, explores scandals large and small, from the way investigations into the murders of Daniel Morgan and Stephen Lawrence in the early 1990s were hobbled by police links to organised crime and dodgy detective agencies, to the squalid culture that led to the force telling a series of porkies about the dreadful failings that led to the shooting of De Menezes. Lewis replied that NI’s new management standards committee had been ‘structured’ in a way to prevent any conflict and promised the company was not engaged in ‘tactical disclosure’. According to the minutes, Lewis said the MSC reported to Joel Klein – a former White House lawyer who was now executive vice-president of News Corp in the US.
