About this deal

Bug killers are not all bad but lots are. It all depends on how they work and how they are applied. The female weevils lay their eggs in the compost or soil among host plants. As a rule, this happens in August and September, though a lot depends on the weather during the previous winter and spring. In a mild year, egg-laying could start in early summer. Each female is capable of laying 1000 or more eggs. These eggs are less than 1mm across, white at first, later turning brown. They are difficult to see and much smaller than the granules of controlled-release fertiliser found in container-grown plants, which are often mistaken for insect eggs. Or you can use Zee No Weevil, a granular product applied to the surface of compost or around the base of susceptible plants. It is made from dried, crushed olive pommace (the dried leftovers from making organic olive oil) and aromatic Mediterranean herbs. They are based on plant extracts, plant oils or other safe compounds and have to be sprayed directly on the to the pest that you are trying to control. As such they will take more than one application over several days to remove all pests.

After 28 days, items can still be returned at the discretion of our staff, excluding garden tools, electrical goods, and plants under our 1-year guarantee. In a heated greenhouse, vine weevils can feed and breed throughout the year, so all stages of the life cycle can be found. What can I do to protect my plants from vine weevils? Don't despair, there are several ways of dealing with this plant-nibbling nasty. It is important to be vigilant and keep a close eye on all your Ornamental plants grown in containers can be treated with the systemic neonicotinoid insecticide acetamiprid (e.g. Bug Clear Ultra Vine Weevil Killer) as a liquid drench applied to the compost. This insecticide gives protection against the grubs for up four months; treatment in mid- to late summer will control the young larvae and prevent damage occurring later in the autumn to spring period. This product cannot be used to treat edible plants or ornamental plants growing in the ground BugClear Ultra Vine Weevil Killer is a systemic insecticide that can be used for container-grown plants (except edible ones). It is watered onto the compost.Another way is to use a physical barrier as the adult beetles cannot fly from plant to plant. Stand potted plants on upturned pots sat in saucers of water - the adults can't swim. Or surround the pots with Barrier Glue available from Agralan - the adults cannot walk across it. With either of these methods it is important to move plants away from walls or greenhouse/conservatory walls as the adults can jump down onto them; they cannot fly. Because vine weevil is such a destructive pest, every effort must be taken to control both the adults and the soil-borne grubs. Plants growing in pots and containers, outdoors or under cover, are most likely to be severely damaged by vine weevil grubs. Plants growing in the open ground are less likely to be damaged, althoughheavy infestations ofgrubscanoccur on strawberries, Primula, polyanthus, Sedum ,Heuchera and young yew plants. Large items are sent via a standard 48L (48 hour large) service. Large items take from 2 working days to arrive.

Sprays that promise prolonged protection after spraying are dangerous to bees and other beneficial insects. The following pesticides (from by the Pesticide Action Network) contain neonicotinoids that are harmful to bees: Vine Weevil larvae are a major pest for ornamental garden and household plants. The larvae feed on plant roots causing sudden wilting or killing your plants. The larvae are most active from July to October as they feed on your plants to fatten up for over wintering, while they develop in to adults the following year. The adult beetles feed on the foliage of many herbaceous plants and shrubs, especially Rhododendron, evergreen Euonymus , Hydrangea , Epimedium, Bergenia, Primula and strawberry. Adults rarely cause enough damage to affect the vigour of plants. A trap containing nematodes ( Steinernema carpocapsae), isavailable for controlling adult vine weevil. The traps should be placed on the ground below plants damaged by the weevils during the summer. The adults enter the trap during the day and are infected by the nematodes You have had the goods delivered within seven working days of delivery from Future Garden Ltd, this starts from the day after the goods have been signed for.

Use the measure provided to mix 60ml of BugClear Ultra Vine Weevil Killer with 1 litre of water in a watering can or mixing vessel. Pour the solution over the compost, at the recommended rate. A litre of solution treats 10 litres of compost. Ideal for use on flowers, roses, ornamental plants grown in pots and hanging baskets outdoors and in conservatories. Dilute the concentrated liquid as recommended on the label and water it on to the compost in the containers. It works in the roots and the compost, where it will protect against vine weevil and other compost-dwelling insect plant pests for up to 2 months. Vine-weevil grubs usually hatch after two weeks and immediately start to feed on the roots of their host. Fully-grown grubs burrow deeper into the soil to pupate, usually in late spring. Most adults do not emerge until the following June or July, when the whole cycle starts over again. Is the vine-weevil life cycle different indoors?
