About this deal

The hood is curved so the front of the panel is curved. Now that I’m done, I wish I had the sense to just cut it straight down at an angle. It would have been so much easier and it would have looked fine. I found that it’s so much harder to work with the curved pieces. I’ve been seeing a few DIY converting Transformers Bumblebee costumes around the internet for a while now. Recently my son has been obsessed with Bumblebee from Transformers and while there’s always the option of buying the transforming Bumblebee costume, I decided to attempt to make the costume for him. I’m happy to report that my attempt ended up looking pretty decent. I did make the costume on the fly and eyeballed everything so there are no measurements. So this is going to be less of a tutorial and more of a guide if you want to make a DIY converting Transformers Bumblebee costume of your own. DIY Converting Transformers Bumblebee Costume One of the most iconic figures in the Transformers is Bumblebee. My friend loves him as a character, so we decided to make her a costume for the Chicago Comic and Entertainment Expo (C2E2) At this point I should point out that I used tape to put everything together just because I thought it was so much easier to work with. Because I was eyeballing everything, nothing was straight or fit perfectly, which would have made gluing a huge nightmare. As you can see from the second photo on top, there are some gaps between the pieces because not everything was flush and straight. There’s no way glue would have held things together for me. You could always cover the gaps with some paper before painting if you wanted to. Rear Bumper, Trunk, and Roof We added squares to each side for shoulders. they do not have a top at this point in time. we added 2 styrofoam squares to have the shoulder lid rest there. (pic 1)

I placed both pieces together upright and played with the placement. The closer I put the piece together, the taller the roof of the car would curve. I ended up trimming off from of the length of the roof so that the length of the car wouldn’t be too long and the roof wouldn’t be too tall. There will always be negative whiners, on all of the boards, but the positive folks far outweigh on here. To make the headlights, cut off the top of your soda bottle. basically you need the portion that the cap screws into. (pic 4, Fig 1) Here I’ll point out all the pieces of the car and label each piece so it will make more sense going forward.

I found a simple template for a Chevy Camaro (see video). All I had to do was enlarge the template to the size of my son curled up on his knees and elbows (36″). To do this, I borrowed a friend’s projector, aimed it at my best piece of cardboard, and enlarged it to the correct size. Then, just trace it. SUPER easy. The thighs are basically boxes (pic 1). They are just angled in and there is a little section cut out if you are a dude for your :;ahem:;. Electric sander for smoothing the foamular. I guess you could use sandpaper, but it would be really, really hard, and take forever if you could even do it. This homemade Transformer (that actually transforms) Halloween costume took a whole week to make. I got the idea to make a transformer costume, but then I thought it would be cool if the transformer would actually transform… so we made the costume transform. By the way, you can get a lot of inspiration from these these cool ready-made transformer costumes!)

Learn from my mistakes* I made the opening way too big and his whole body would come right through the opening. I later added more foam pieces to the opening to make it smaller. Learn from me and make sure the opening is big enough to fit their head but not big enough that their shoulders would fit through too. Front Bumper SORRY-in the pictures one of my lights fell off…i noticed just now, If you scroll at the bottom… you’ll find links to see my costume in a better way). Make a cylinder out of cardboard that will hug the bottle top and is wide enough for your mini mag light to fit into. Then cut directly into the fender of the foot and glue in the cylinder. take the bottle cap and cut out the top. replace it with some blue acetate. you should be able to put the mag light in and out of the cylinder and close it with the bottle cap. (pic 4, Fig 2) Christ if it weren't for the whiny final fantasy/kingdom hearts fans, we would be THE biggest group of whiners as a whole in regards to a fan base. The second and most important element of the transformer costume is the hood and doors. The reason that this part is so important is that the hood and doors make up the main and most crucial transformation elements. When creating this part, make sure that all transformation action is sound before moving on (test multiple times). The next foamular part is the area below the grille. This area is much easier as you will not need to shape or sand the pieces. All you need to do is simply cut out pieces to cover the area below the grill, keeping a small rectangle at bottom, and glue them on the same way (pic #11 for reference). I just took some styrofoam and carved and sanded it into the shape i wanted. then covered it in craft foam. (pic 4 + 5) To start off, I think you should definitely familiarize yourself with the costume. Understand all the pieces, how the costume moves, which pieces are permanently connected, which pieces swing, and which pieces should not be connected at all. I feel this step is really important so you don’t get confused along the way. I watched a ton of videos and looked at a lot of pictures of transforming costumes. Ultimately, this YouTube video from a channel called “I Am Bentley” is the one I based my costume off of.

The hood is pretty straight forward. I matched the length of the hood to the length of the hood that I had already made on my front side panel. As far as the width, I just put the board up against my son and made sure it was wider than him and he had a little space on either side. The front part of the hood comes to a point (although if it were straight across, it wouldn’t be a big deal). For the rear bumper, trunk, and roof, I kept it as all one piece and only scored it in certain places so that it would fold the right way. I used the entire length of my foam board. Starting on one end, I measured for the height of the rear bumper, which is the same as the height of the front bumper, and I scored it on the top of the board so it would bend down. Next I made a line for the length of my trunk, which I eyeballed about 4 inches. Here I scored underneath the board so that I could fold it up. The rest of the piece would be used for the roof of the car. Rear Side Panels Poke a hole on the sides (hip side). Take a metal circle washer and glue it on either side of the hole. get some string or more shoe lace and thread it through. about 4 -5 inches should do.- The washer is there so that the thread will be supported by the washer, and not the cardboard (which can easily rip through with wear/tear)..
