About this deal

Fat, meat and oils are to be avoided, some that are “recommended” but we do not advise are tea bags, the tea is fine but the bag is usually man made and will not decay, another one often “recommended” the contents of the vacuum cleaner! don’t worms do not eat hair and bits of plastic etc that have gone up the spout. A wormery is relatively easy to establish though a few points need to be considered. Conditions required Overfeeding can cause all sorts of problems, decaying food is covered in mould, bacteria and fungii this is what the worms actually feed on but when it turns stagnant it becomes a different thing altogether and worms will be driven away so always keep the food layer to under 2″ or 5cm this may mean that you do not add any more for several days or even weeks it all depends on the time of year and the size of the worm population in the wormery, feed a little at a time and watch what the worms have done with the last feed, winter is a quiet time for worms.

Some wastes have strong odours, which can attract flies (termed fruit flies) that are harmless, but can be a nuisance. This problem can be avoided by burying the new waste in the decomposed material or covering it with a layer of damp newspaper. Do not use chemicals to control the flies as it could harm the worms. I have a concrete parking space, but no garden, so I've been using a Can o Worms. I'll summarise how I've used it so far, then explain the problem. I bought it in November and put the worms in, then gradually filled the first tier up with food scraps straight from the kitchen. No onions, citrus, etc though. The worms loved this and seemed very happy. After that I have been filling up tiers 2 and 3 with food that has been fermented in a bokashi bin first. Admittedly, I did put loads of the bokashi scraps in the bin in one go. Until January the can o worms was outside in the rain (with a raincap on) but has since been moved into a shelter. The shape of the bin is a little unique compared to other worm bins. It is cylinder in shape. Not a bad thing. The worms will digest any vegetable kitchen scraps, including coffee grounds, that you’d normally add to compost, but avoid meat or animal products such as cheese which can attract flies. Go easy on citrus peel and alliums like onion and garlic too, as large amounts will make conditions too acidic for your worms. You can also add small amounts of weeds and leaves, as well as shredded, non-glossy newspaper or torn-up cardboard.

Can O Worms Review Conclusion

Once the top tray’s full, swap it round with the empty middle tray and start filling that instead. The worms will migrate up through the holes to where the food is, leaving the full tray empty of worms and ready for collection. Repeat this process each time the active tray becomes full up. Worm tea or worm wee makes a nutritious liquid feed for your plants Using Worm Compost and Worm Wee This is a 2-tier model (one leachate collection and two active trays) and I will be preparing one of the two trays which will be the current feeding tray. The second one can be either removed and added later on when the first is full. Or you can leave it below the feeding tray and it will be an intermediate level for the worms to fall in before reaching the leachate tray. Another option is to fill it with moist bedding material, this will create an neutral area for the worms to retreat to if something goes wrong in the top feeding tray (heat, acidity etc...). If thinking about keeping wormeries in the kitchen, utility room or on the balcony, consider that when neglected they can sometimes produce odours Full instructions are included, please note we supply this with or without the exclusive Worms Direct worm and bedding kit. The basic wormery with no worms is just that, it is complete except it does not include the worms or bedding, it does not include items such as “worm blanket” or “wormery conditioner” and is therefore offered at a much lower price Last step is to cover the whole thing with more fresh and dry bedding material, in this case some more egg box cardboard

Tonight I needed to start a Can-O-Worms for a customer so I took the opportunity to record the steps with some photographs. The 2nd tray needs to be resting on top of the organic material, this way the worms will moves very naturally upwards through the holes into the 2nd tray as they need to find more food. Environmental problems in worm tray Compost / worm farm conditioner or Lime Mix which Balances the PH levels of your worm farm and helps the worms to digest larger quantities of food, reducing odours and controlling pest infestations. The Tumbleweed Can-O-Worms is a great way to get kids into recycling and it's bursting with fun! The world’s best-selling worm farm has been designed with built-in mounds to encourage worms to move from collector trays to working trays, unique flow-through ventilation to maximise performance, and no mess extras like well-designed legs and a drip-free tap. Do your bit for the environment. “Reduce, Re-Use, Recycle” - it’s easy. We just have to make the commitment.

Now your problem seems to be that the worms are not going to the next level up, but instead the next level down. Without seeing your wormery I can not determine the reason why they are doing this, but there are a few common explanations. Wormcast is slightly toxic to worms The round shape is designed for teaching kids how to recycle: young people experience increased engagement when standing in a circle. It’s more inclusive, inspires learning, plus everyone gets to be hands-on and interactive! You need to add eggshells, worms will graze the inside of eggshells but it is the lining they are after, crushing them to a fine powder increases the chance that some may be used by the worms to aid digestion, as a powder the rest will just be mixed in with the compost, whole eggshells, even if broken up will remain just that, in fact, they can be a pain when left in the compost! – almost a myth. When it comes to making a worm farm, also make sure that the food that you put into the composter remains loose. You’ll be able to avoid compaction inside (both the bedding materials and the food) the bin if you put in some corrugated cardboard strips or some presoaked newspaper shreds. Not only will these help keep in that much needed moisture in the bin, it will also help keep the system dark, since worms prefer it more that way (they can be very sensitive to light and vibrations since they’re born with no eyes and ears, and only rely on their senses). Worms like moist, warm conditions, so keep your wormery somewhere shady and as close to room temperature as you can. They don’t like to be frozen, so move the wormery indoors for winter – into a garage, outbuilding or utility room is ideal. Feed scraps and peelings to your worms Looking After Your Composting Worms Since switching to the bokashi stuff the worms don't seem interested, in fact they're hardly moving into tier 2 and 3, preferring to stay in tier 1.

This exciting new composting system is the result of years of research and development, to utilize the benefits of worms which are nature’s own recyclers. By putting worms to work in this innovative system you will be converting your food waste into nutrient rich, 100% organic fertilizer that your potted plants, garden and vegetables will love. Fix the tap to the Collector Tray with the nut on the inside. (turn the tap not the nut)2. Attach the five legs making sure they slide firmly into place.3. Place one Working Tray on the Collector Tray. (Put aside the other Working Trays in a convenient place until you need them). Once the tap and legs have been assembled, a working tray is next put in place, a couple of sheets of newspaper or similer should be cut to cover the holes in the bottom, this is simply to stop the bedding dropping through into the sump area, when the paper is in place you will need to add the bedding and worms The last potential reason for your worms adventure downwards is that they don’t like the new food or new environment in the new tray, even though they it might be the same type of food you feed them every day! Food scraps will break down and excess will start fermenting and heating up. Too much acidity and heat is bad for the worms so adding a pH buffer is highly recommended. Powdered eggshells or garden lime / dolomite are perfect and free/cheap. The micro-organismsNow’s the fun part – time to add your worms! Start with a three-inch (8cm) layer of bedding material. You can use compost or coir fibre, dampened a little to make it nice and comfortable for your worms. They’ll soon bury themselves into that lovely bedding. A. Be careful what you feed your worms particularly if you are unaware of its source. Manures, for example, from horses, cattle or dogs often has vermicides still active in it that were designed to kill parasitic worms in the animal. They can kill all your worms in one day. If you use animal manures make sure you know when worming is conducted and avoid using the manure for a few weeks. I will monitor the moisture of the bin on a daily basis the first couple of days and see if the worms are happy to be collected by the client this weekend. Now it is time to add the first weekly amount of food. I start by digging into the bedding until I can see the bottom cardboard The idea is that the 1st tray will contain worms with the organic material mixed in with it. The worm will start decomposing the organic waste into wormcast. Once the 1st tray is full, a second tray will be added on top of the 1st tray, and once again food will be added.
