We are proud to be one of the strategic partners of the Canterbury Safer Streets Project alongside our Christ Church Students’ Union - helping to make the city a safer place for not only our students and staff but all local residents and visitors of Canterbury. If you have a Blue Badge, you are entitled to park in the following car parks and on-street parking spaces in Canterbury free of charge for up to two hours: The University has been working to secure funding alongside the Canterbury Safety Partnership as a part of the Government’s Safer Streets 4 funding. The Partnership were able to acquire funding towards a range of safety projects for the city between 2022 – 2024.

Begun by William the Conqueror around 1070 as one of three "Royal Castles," it became a prison for a period before being abandoned. Regarded as the cradle of English Christianity, it was here that St. Augustine made his first converts among the pagan Anglo Saxons and where, in 597 CE, he became the fledgling English church's first bishop. His burial place in St. Augustine's Abbey, just outside the city walls, was a much-revered shrine until the building of neighboring Canterbury Cathedral.

It's marketed as one of the UK's largest collections of Freemason-related artifacts and research materials. Highlights include regalia and paintings, as well as rare glassware and porcelain associated with the Masons. A variety of historical documents are also on display, supported by interesting audiovisual displays that provide a look at the history of the group. The building keeps disclosing fresh vistas – the choir almost as large as the nave, the Trinity Chapel beyond it to the east, the crypt undershadowing everything, its ceiling dramatically low like the canopy of a stone-pillared forest. Add to this the great Cloister and the Chapter House, where the Benedictine monks assembled daily, and the cathedral seems to become a church of many churches. It was in the Chapter House that the first performance of TS Eliot’s Murder in the Cathedral was given, in June 1935. Kent Police have worked with key licenced trade venues to ensure that all reports of spiking are reported to the police so that appropriate action can be taken. Venues have also been taking measures to protect their customers including reviewing or establishing spiking policies, testing empty glasses, providing drink coverings and increasing searches before entry. With this bid funding, we have got new compatriots in the community. Being apart of the Community Safety Partnership and the Purple Flag accreditation ( which awards cities for the safe night time economies, of which Canterbury has now been awarded for the 11 th year in a row. There is a Best bar none scheme in the city that monitors and awards the pubs and clubs on their safety and due diligence. This has meant Canterbury Street Pastors are in the midst of these groups and continue to be a constant presence in the City. Put another way, we are keeping God in the middle of the night time economy. We are in the midst of keeping Canterbury safe on a Saturday night.
