However, this is just the beginning of struggle for Khan. He sends off emissaries who end up dead after immense torture. His trade routes are faced with violent rebellion. Khan: Empire of Silver In my opinion, this is a perfect specimen of HF. I enjoyed it and it is easily the best book I have read this year and I anticipate it will make my top 10 at the end of the year. Overall, the story is compelling. While the average reader will have some idea of the sheer force that Genghis Kahn ultimately became, that knowledge is far more amazing when you consider his humble beginnings. A must read.

This was a decent work of historical fiction with a brilliantly realised settin Darien is clearly meant to be the first in a series and not a stand-alone. What this means is that the book introduces the reader to people and places that are going to develop over more than one book. The plan at present is for a trilogy.

Like Arthur (a boy that is unable to speak), Daw Threefold (a gambler and cynical chancer), Elias Post (a hunter), Tellius (an old swordsman banished from his home). There’s also Vic Deeds (who doesn’t feel guilt) and Nancy (who may just be the undoing of everybody).

With politics and war, there is little time for rest, the author keeps up a relentless pace that is suited to the story. With so many things going on the author navigates the reader through history and includes a great deal of factual information and accounts. he does mention, that occasionally he has moved an event or skipped over the odd more mundane fact to keep the story flowing. He does this with great flair as the story never once lets up or feels like it has a dull moment. That’s about it for the moment. Had his childhood been easy, he would probably have settled down with a couple of wives and a few goats. Historic record shows otherwise, but that record hardly brings Ghengis Khan's tale to life in the way that Iggulden has managed in this book. Darien is an impressive start to a series that looks set to become epic. I had a few niggles but overall I really enjoyed this and look forward to reading more from this world. Their arrival inside of the walls while the sun sets is going to set off a series of explosive events. Before the sun rises again, five destinies are going to have been made, and lost, in the city of Darien. Even though the sun goes down, the city is going to know no slumber. For long slumbering passions have awoken. Fortunes are going to be lost and won, and lives are going to be claimed and staked. And one story long waiting to be told are going to catch fire in their telling. A new empire is being raised at the Italian peninsula. During this time, two boys, at the City of Rome are transforming to men whose ambitions are nothing but glory, battles and serving the greatest empire in the world.
