About this deal

Coral Reefs of Australia examines our evolving relationship with coral reefs, and explores their mystery and the fast pace at which they are now changing. Corals are feeling the dramatic impacts of global climate change, having undergone several devastating mass coral bleaching events, dramatic species range shifts and gradual ocean acidification. A Coral Reef Handbook: A Guide to the Fauna, Flora and Geology of Heron Island and Adjacent Reefs and Cays by Patricia Mather and Isobel Bennett This year Everyone active will be launching our AGe is just a number campaign on Sunday 1st October which marks the National day for older people. In addition, we’re delighted to be supporting Silver Sunday this year by sharing information about the more than 400 weekly sessions that we run dedicated to older people across our facilities. Messner begins and ends the The Brilliant Deep with one tiny coral spawn and how it can grow into a new colony. And what feels to be a simple story in between is in actuality a wonderful lesson about ocean life. Readers learns how coral reefs are formed, why they are important to the not just the ocean's environment, but also to ours, and that sometimes, it takes just one person with an idea to make a difference. For those looking for adventure on the high seas there is the pirate ship complete with shooting cannons. During the late 1960s and 1970s, massive herds of poisonous crown-of-thorns starfish suddenly began to infest coral reef communities around the world, leaving in their wake devastation comparable to a burnt-out rainforest. In What is Natural?, Jan Sapp both examines this ecological catastrophe and captures the intense debate among scientists about what caused the crisis, and how it should be handled. AUSTRALIA’S GREAT BARRIER REEF A Handbook on the Corals, Shells, Crabs, Larger Animals and Birds, with some remarks on the Reef’s place in History. I really loved this children's biography about Ken Nedimyer. The art, by the talented illustrator Matthew Forsythe, was gorgeous and Kate Messner's writing was the perfect mix of poetic and informative. I will be offering this book up as a suggestion all over the library - you like fish? "The Brilliant Deep." You want a science-y father/daughter duo? "The Brilliant Deep". Ocean love? Curiosity about the coral reef? It works. Award-winning children's author Kate Messner ( The Seventh Wish) and acclaimed Canadian artist Matthew Forsythe ( The Gold Leaf) have teamed up for the children's non-fiction title, The Brilliant Deep: Rebuilding the World's Coral Reefs: The Story of Ken Nedimyer and the Coral Restoration Foundation. A pictorial biography as well an introductory examination into conservation efforts of coral reefs, The Brilliant Deep is a fascinating true story brought to life by beautiful artwork. For those over 18 who are in search of the “rays” can relax in Sauna World, with two saunas and a saunarium it is a mix between wet and dry heat. True reef-building corals are limited in geographical distribution to the clear, warm sunlit waters of the tropical oceans. There are countless reefs throughout the Indo-Pacific region and Australia’s Great Barrier Reef is the largest, and most spectacular, coral reef province in the world. About 2000 kilometres long and located on Queensland’s continental shelf, it is made up of over 2900 individual coral reefs composed mainly of consolidated limestone debris formed from calcium carbonate with living corals on its surface. They vary in size, form and type, and the coral reef could be considered as the marine counterpart of a tropical rain forest. “I dunno. I am extraordinarily depressed about the world's inaction about the environment as evidenced by the direst possible October 2018 United Nations IPCC landmark report: AUSTRALIA’S GREAT BARRIER REEF A Handbook on the Corals, Shells, Crabs, Larger Animals and Birds, with some remarks on the Reef’s place in History For the first time, master aquarist Eric Borneman offers an authoritative, comprehensive, and fully illustrated guide to appropriate aquarium species, including a diversity of soft corals, as well as popular and rare large-polyp and small-polyp stony corals. GREAT BARRIER REEF MARINE PARK AUTHORITY – WORKSHOP ON THE NORTHERN SECTOR OF THE GREAT BARRIER REEF by Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority

The beauty of this type of book is it can be dipped into at any stage because of the nature of the mini chapters. This book will obviously appeal to marine biologists and divers but as a general guide to coral reefs biology, flora and fauna and how the crucial impact of climate change will impact on them, then it will also appeal to all readers with an interest in general natural history. Highly recommended."—Roy Stewart, British Naturalists Association Family Swimming with Waterslides - Mondays, Thursdays, Fridays (termtime) - 3:30pm - 8:45pm, Saturdays and Sundays 9am - 8pm, Holiday periods Monday - Friday 09:00-20:45 The book covers the huge list of dangers that reefs face today and how people are working to protect them. It looks at artificial reef structures and the marine life that lives on them. There are chapters on reef fish and sharks and how the diverse species living on the reefs interact. . . . I will never look at a coral reef in the same way again and will marvel even more at their beauty and complexity."—Caroline Robertson-Brown, Scubaverse SOFT CORALS AND SEA FANS A Comprehensive Guide to the Tropical shallow-water genera of the Central-West Pacific, the Indian Ocean and the Red Sea. For millennia, coral reefs have flourished as one of the planet’s most magnificent natural wonders. As Earth’s most biodiverse ecosystem-surpassing even the rainforests-they are home to a cooperative network ranging from immense fish to sunlight-capturing algae to invisible microbes. Just how critical the microbes in particular are for coral reef health is finally understood thanks to recent discoveries. Coral Reefs in the Microbial Seas is the first book to unveil the complete story of how these relationships uphold coral reef health and what impact human activity has on this delicate balance.

Keeping live corals has been likened to “”Bonsai for the Cousteau generation”” and “”the ultimate underwater gardening experience.”” Beautiful, bizarre, and among nature’s most colorful creations, living corals are now being successfully kept and grown in tens of thousands of home saltwater aquariums. Bring the kids along to Coral Reef to work of some of their excess energy. Suitable for the young of all ages whatever the weather. Stunningly beautiful . . . . I will never look at a coral reef in the same way again and will marvel

Messner's engaging text is uncomplicated and direct as she follows the life of Ken as he grows into manhood and fatherhood, making the ocean his life's work. She gets straight to the point, then moves onto the next. Matthew Forsythe's artwork is equally simple, almost primitive in nature. It has all the colors of the ocean in them and adds visual details that help clarify concepts for young children. Sarah M. Hamylton is President of the Australian Coral Reef Society. She is also an Associate Professor at the University of Wollongong, where she is Director of the Spatial Analysis Laboratories.
