About this deal

The Queen succeeded to the Throne on the 6 February, 1952 on the death of her father, King George VI. She was in Kenya at the time and became the first Sovereign in over 200 years to accede while abroad. For most of us, the colourful, otherworldly marinescapes of coral reefs are as remote as the alien landscapes of the moon. We rarely, if ever, experience these underwater wonderlands for ourselves – we are, after all, air-breathing, terrestrial creatures mostly cocooned in cities. It is easy, therefore, not to notice the perilous state they’re in: we’ve lost 50% of coral reefs in the past 20 years; more than 90% are expected to die by 2050 according to a presentation at the Ocean Sciences Meeting in San Diego, California earlier this year. As the oceans heat further and turn more acidic, owing to rising carbon dioxide emissions, coral reefs are tipped to become the world’s first ecosystems to become extinct because of us. The Local Authority Treescapes Fund (LATF) which enables Local Authorities (LAs) and their partners, including schools, community groups and NGOs, to restore tree cover in urban and rural non-woodland areas. Her part in the ceremony will be simpler - she will be crowned and anointed with holy oil, while King Charles will also be blessed, take the oaths and receive various items of regalia.

Coral reefs are facing an unprecedented threat from global carbon dioxide emissions, chiefly because of hotter oceans and acidification as the atmospheric gas dissolves into seawater. The diminutive champion was outpaced by Brigadier Gerard in the 2,000 Guineas over a mile, a distance that favoured the winner. Raced over longer distances Mill Reef was unbeaten, and particularly effective on soft ground. Often he wouldn't just win, but win by a relatively large margin, as when he took the King George VI by six lengths. Brigadier Gerard won more races, but none of his achievements matched Mill Reef at his peak. An aerial view of bleached corals at the Great Barrier Reef. On 24 June 1953, the Honours of Scotland (the crown, the sceptre and the sword) were carried before The Queen in a procession from the Palace of Holyroodhouse to St Giles Cathedral. I am delighted that today we are opening the Coronation Living Heritage Fund to commemorate the Coronation of His Majesty King Charles III. This will enable communities to grow new and diverse trees to enrich the environment in which people, wildlife, and nature coexist for generations to come”. The council is not organising anything but it is expected there will be some community events in the area. Previous monarchs, including Queen Elizabeth II, have taken the accession declaration oath at their first state opening of parliament.

The Coronation Big Lunch, at which neighbours and communities are invited to share food and fun together, will take place across the country on the same date. On Monday, 8th May 2023, members of the public will be invited to take part in The Big Help Out, which will encourage people to try volunteering for themselves and join the work being undertaken to support their local areas. The Coronation service fell into six parts: the recognition, the oath, the anointing, the investiture (which includes the crowning), the enthronement and the homage. Thousands of events are expected to take place in every corner of the United Kingdom this May as people take to their streets, gardens, parks and community spaces to join the Coronation celebrations and mark this historic occasion.

As coverage declined, this had impacts on the species that are supported by coral. The biodiversity of reefs was found to have declined by 63%, while the abundance of fish species fell by 60%.
