About this deal

I sowed batches of four seeds of 'Apricot Lemonade' in 7cm pots on the windowsill in April, moved them into a sheltered spot outside when they came through and then planted out the potfuls, without breaking them up, at the end of May. Delightful. Cosmos are sensitive to soil amendments, and a fertilizer heavy in nitrogen, in particular, will promote foliage growth at the expense of flowers. Cosmos perform best when planted in average soil without extra amendments. They will even tolerate poor soil as long as they get full sunlight. You can then start a new round of seeds in late spring and even a third in early summer, which will take longer to bloom. As your early crop starts to wind down, the second (and third) plantings will just be hitting their stride for summer and fall blooms.

Fixing this is going to take time. You can’t successfully transplant full-sized cosmos plants, and there’s no easy way to remove fertilizer from the soil. You can try planting another batch of seeds in a different area or just wait until next year and try again in less rich soil. 2. Too much water Fertilizer: Cosmos thrive in regular soil and may sprawl in nitrogen rich soils. If desired, an application of organic flower fertilizer can be mixed in around plants. If you have a slightly shady yard, try growing your cosmos in a pot or other container. That way, you have more flexibility for moving it where the sunniest spot is in your yard. The winners will be randomly selected from all valid entries received during the promotional period within 2 working days of the Closing Date. Cosmos are proving to be one of the most popular annual flowers in our range at the moment,” Peter Freeman, New Product Development Manager at T&M told me reccently. “Sales of our long standing varieties are strong, sales of recent T&M introductions such as 'Lemonade'&‘Apricot Lemonade’ are extremely good. However, the most popular range by far are our unique cosmos 'Cupcakes' varieties. Harvest these stripy round courgettes when they reach the size of a golf ball to enjoy their deliciously sweet flavour. But if you prefer to wait for bigger fruits, cut them in half, stuff with your favourite filling and bake in the oven. Succession sow your courgette ‘Boldenice’ seeds from March to June and enjoy bumper crops through to the end of October. Terms and conditions If you started seeds early before the weather got consistently warm, the cosmos’ days to maturity (in other words, bloom) might be delayed. Cold soil and cosmos seeds do not mix, as the seeds require warmth to germinate.

Drift or group planting produces an especially spectacular display and allows the plants to support one another too. Taller varieties do benefit from a little support, try growing Cosmos between perennials, alternatively growing cages or canes are ideal. Cosmos won’t benefit from that extra care, though. If you have a patch of soil or a neglected garden bed with so-so soil in it, that’s a much better spot for your cosmos flowers. Save the compost-rich beds for heavy feeders, instead. The Prize is non-exchangeable or transferable and cannot be used in conjunction with any other offers, promotions, or discounts. This jump start will help the cosmos reach maturity while the days are still shorter than they will be during the peak of summer. But now T&M bring us ‘Apricot Lemonade’. I’ve had it on trial this year: it has the same neat and bushy habit, and early flowering, as ‘Lemonade’, the plants have made about 50cm and they’ve bushed out well. The flowers are almost primrose yellow with a hazy apricot pink band around the yellow eye. The colour varies a little, some are a more peachy yellow than others, but none are so different that they don’t fit in. When the seedlings are about 4 inches tall pot them on into individual 3 inch pots to grow on until the risk of frost has past, then harden off before planting out in your garden. Plant Cosmos in full sun and water well, then add a mulch to help conserve moisture.Keep in mind that cosmos are short-day plants, so if they are young plants, they will bloom best once days are under 14 hours long. They will eventually bloom, even if the days are long. To get the strongest flush of flowers, try starting them indoors 4-6 weeks before planting them out.
