Description

You will be able to enjoy transfer speeds of up to 6 GB per second thanks to the SATA 6.0 GB/s hardware interface that comes with the Crucial MX500 and the Crucial BX500. Flash Memory Type Crucial claims a maximum sequential read speed of 530MB/s and a maximum sequential write speed of 500MB/s, so despite the pricing it’s evidently confident in the BX500’s ability to keep up with at least mid-range drives. There are a couple of hidden costs, however: first, there are no fancy features, like the MX300’s built-in encryption, although for most home users that won’t be a big deal. Not all NAND is created equal, however, and even if an SSD promises to max out the speed limits of what SATA can allow, it might fall far short of those speeds in more demanding transfer jobs, so there are still opportunities for new drives to impress on performance, even in the entry-level arena. The BX500 happens to have a good pedigree, too: it follows the MX500 and MX300, both 2.5in SSDs that managed to balance good speeds and low prices.

The PC then booted to Windows so much faster than it normally does and programs loads almost instantly rather than the delayed response of yore. The SM2258XT, known as the XT model, combats this by removing the need for DRAM. This allows the SSD to store the critical flash translation layer directly on the flash instead of in a DRAM buffer. This lowers prices by a few dollars, but it also results in lower performance. NAND isn't as fast as DRAM, and the constant read/write modifications to the flash translation layer are a strenuous task. As a result, performance can be rather unflattering–even falling into hard drive territory. Controller and 96-Layer FlashAll that said, if you are going to buy a budget SATA SSD, relatively recent models like the Crucial BX500 might not logically appeal. Surely, as the SATA platform’s throughput limit means new drives won’t necessarily be faster than old ones, it makes more sense to get a higher-end but older model that’s dropped in price? It was very simple to fit as well. Plugged the SATA cable into the drive and the motherboard and found a spare power plug coming from the power supply that fitted as well and then it was time to test things out. Today, we are going to compare two solid-state drives (SSDs), the Crucial MX500 vs BX500. We will look at capacity, compatibility, and speeds. For a complete overview, we will add a comparison chart and some pros and cons of each.

I also noticed that after the PC logs into Windows I can access programs straight away rather than waiting for Windows to do all its stuff before being allowed to access anything. The BX500 features a plastic casing that simply snaps together to hold the small 1/4 sized PCB within. This helps to reduce weight and material cost but leaves it with a low-quality feel. And, unlike most other SSDs, there are no thermal pads to help dissipate heat from the controller. The BX500 also did moderately well in the tougher 4K test, where it produced a read speed of 248MB/s and a write speed of 221MB/s. While these results aren’t as high, relatively speaking, as those of the standard sequential test, they’re still pleasantly close to mid-range territory.
