Small, portable and whisper-quiet thanks to Peltier technology, you can keep this sleek-looking dehumidifier on your nightstand or dresser and let it run all night without you even noticing. Although, if you are light-sensitive, we suggest covering up the glowing light! Removing up to 300ml of water, the Silentnight Dehumidifier works all day and all night to improve your bedroom's humidity and simultaneously filter out allergens (perfect for those with hay fever!). Then when the light goes from green to orange, just empty the tank, and start it up again. It's simple, easy to use, and the best dehumidifier for your family's bedrooms! However, these smaller and cheaper dehumidifiers can still be good for keeping on top of low levels of excess moisture within the home. Most dehumidifiers are noisy, averaging decibel levels of between 34-48dB. That's because they draw in air via a fan and then use a compressor and refrigerant to cool and condense the air to extract the moisture from it. Performance: Also capable of reducing moisture in a 15m² space, the Silentnight 39899 600ml Dehumidifier just does so at a slower rate than the ProBreeze 1500ml Mini dehumidifier, extracting 0.3L of water from the air per day in contrast to the ProBreeze's 0.5L. However, it's not perfect. A powerful extraction rate of 20L, plus that Laundry boost mode, means higher running costs. This dehumidifier guzzles 440W of energy compared to the 20L MeacoDry Arete One's 216W. What the Pro Breeze 20L Premium does offer is a more generous water tank of 5.5L compared to the 20L MeacoDry Arete One's 4.8L, although in practice we didn't find ourselves emptying the MeacoDry that much more frequently.

The De'Longhi Tascuigo AriaDry DEX216F is the largest model in the range and able to extract 16L of water from the air per day, and although the tank capacity isn't the largest, at 2.1L it still offers adequate capacity. This multi-purpose appliance also has an air purifier function with a double filtration system that can remove dust and other allergens from the air, plus a dedicated Laundry Drying function. First up, it's worth making clear that this small dehumidifier has a low extraction rate compared to many others on our list. The ProBreeze 1500ml Mini Dehumidifier can extract just 0.5L of moisture from the air per day. For comparison, the lowest extraction rate offered within the MeacoDry Arete One range is 10L of moisture extraction per day.

Frequently Asked Questions about Blyss WDH-316DB Dehumidifier

Ease of use: Like all of the low cost dehumidifiers on our list, functionality is basic, but that does make operation hassle-free. There is just one on/off button which you’ll find at the top of the dehumidifier. When it’s in operation a blue LED light will light up so you know it’s working. All that said, the Russell Hobbs RHDH2002 20L dehumidifier still impressed our review team during testing. So, if you’re looking for a powerful dehumidifier with a cheaper upfront cost, the Russell Hobbs RHDH2002 20L is well worth considering. The latest model in Meaco’s dehumidifier range is a compact version of the superb Arete One, dropping the extraction rate down to ten litres per day, but reducing the size of the unit to less than 50cm high. Not only is the Arete One 10L physically unobtrusive, but it’s also impressively quiet. While we measured noise levels of around 42dB with the fans running at full tilt, these rapidly decreased to well below 40dB, which is about as close as dehumidifiers get to silent. In its night mode, the Arete One 10L can go as low as 35dB. Air filter: Some models come with a HEPA filter which helps to provide cleaner air in your home, which will be helpful for any allergy sufferers. Noise levels: This is where the Silentnight 39899 really comes into its own. When switched on, its operating noise levels are just 25dBA, and when I say it’s whisper quiet, I mean it. I couldn't hear this dehumidifier whilst it was running at all. That makes it perfect for anywhere you want to maintain peace and quiet, and thanks to its green light, I thought it made the perfect addition to a kids bedroom, doubling up as a nightlight when its running.

The DD8L Zambezi is an example of a desiccant dehumidifier. These models often have lower capacities but work best in cooler environments. It’s probably obvious that the larger the room(s), the greater capacity you’ll need. Rooms with severe damp problems also require larger capacities. Signs of severe damp include stains on walls, condensations on walls and, in the worst cases, wet floors. For starters, the unit displays the current humidity of a room on a small box section (located between the + and – buttons) on the digital panel. Ease of use: Similar to the ProBreeze 1500ml Mini dehumidifier, the Silentnight model is super simple to use. To operate it there’s just one on/off button, which is placed on top of the unit. Its low price point reflects its basic functionality; there are no humidity settings or differing fan speeds, this affordable dehumidifier runs at just one constant single speed.Mumsnet has been helping parents make their lives easier since 2000 and, in those years, we’ve seen, tried and reviewed thousands of products. In reality, a dehumidifier will rarely reach these numbers, so it’s not the only factor affecting a machine’s extraction effectiveness. This is because extraction varies greatly depending on the temperature and humidity of the air. A compressor dehumidifier is the most common type in the UK as it works best in higher temperatures, such as in a heated home. The panel also displays a series of light indicators for the timer function, tank, all 4 modes of operation, plus for showing whether the dehumidifier is ON or at standby. The LED lights all illuminate over the respective selected function names. Portability The cheapest and smallest dehumidifiers on the market can often only extract 0.5L of water from the air per day – in many cases even less – but larger and more powerful dehumidifiers can extract up to 25L per day which can make a huge difference to your home's health if you struggle with damp issues and condensation.

It's also worth considering noise levels and energy consumption before you invest in a dehumidifier. What's the quietest dehumidifier?

Why you should trust us

If you don't have too large of a damp problem, or only have a small area where you want to reduce humidity, then a cheap dehumidifier can be worth it. I tested the Silentnight 39899 in two key areas of my home, the kitchen and the bedrooms. I found it really made a difference to reducing the condensation around my windows. Plus, the air felt fresher whenever it was running, and it did really well to help eliminate steam and fumes in the kitchen whilst cooking.

High-capacity dehumidifiers are usually power-hungry and noisy, but the MeacoDry Arete One is designed to do more with less energy and a lower volume, topping out at 40dB during typical use and keeping consumption to around 200W. In fact, both figures fall dramatically as humidity levels start to drop. It’s an excellent dehumidifier for larger spaces and, unlike most compressor models, will work at temperatures of between 5 and 25°C. Laura is also a freelance journalist and has written articles for publications including the Daily Mirror, the i, Metro, Stylist and Happiful magazine. Why you should trust us That depends on your humidity levels and what you’re trying to achieve. You don’t always have to leave your dehumidifier on, but you may want to if your damp problem is severe. Also, it can be cheaper to run them at night.

How do dehumidifiers work?

Extraction amount: It is essential to consider the maximum amount of moisture your dehumidifier can extract daily. It can range from anywhere from 500ml to upwards of 30 litres. Small units are fine for occasional use or a small area, such as a cupboard or study. Around 12 litres is suitable for a small flat, medium-sized room or a mild damp problem. Up to 16 litres is best for a larger room or one used regularly for washing or cooking, and units with a capacity of up to 20/30 litres can be used to dehumidify whole homes. And whilst its energy use is low compared to many dehumidifiers on the market, it can't beat the super energy-efficient MeacoDry Arete One in this regard. The Pro Breeze 12L Low Energy dehumidifier uses 220W, whereas the comparable MeacoDry 12L Arete One uses just 151W of energy, and doesn't cost that much more upfront at full RRP. The MeacoDry also offers a built-in air purifier, a larger 2.5L water tank, better laundry drying performance, and quieter operation. If you’ve noticed that there is a lot of condensation on your bedroom windows in the morning, it might be time to buy a dehumidifier. During the night, we sweat (a lot more than you might think) and breathe out warm air; this adds to the moisture in our room. However, dehumidifiers can be noisy, especially the compressor type, and with sleep already at a premium, finding one that doesn’t keep you awake is an absolute must! That’s where the Silentnight dehumidifier comes in. That doesn’t mean capacity should be ignored though. As a general rule, bigger capacity dehumidifiers can deal with larger spaces and higher levels of moisture.
