Stripes (only available in Columbia Classics 4K: Vol. 2) ( US/UK) – 10/12/21 (delayed from 9/14) – N4K, DA Like a sort of mash-up of Robocop, Iron Man and Lethal Weapon with added Kung Fu, this unashamed hybrid genre piece will keep you hooked with its thrill a minute pace and fabulous science fiction premise.

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (4K Steelbook) (US Best Buy exclusive/ UK) – 12/5/23 – N4K, DA variations in clarity and detail levels probably even more noticeable than they already were in the 1080 version. The slight variations in density, as well The Dolby Vision HDR color grading is very good, much better than SDR, but it's still not perfect. There are minor bit-depth errors. This is a source-based error, it's not from the disc's encoding. So, movies from the early 2000s to around 2020 have really been handcuffed by technology. Mostly, digital cameras were used, and early color grading was inadequate. It is what it is, and we're only just coming out of it now, so it's been a struggle. Unfortunately, digital cameras have had poor color depth for some time. High-budget movies in late 2021 have just started to overcome it. But even releases like Dune had bit-depth errors, so we're still not out of this digital handcuff yet. Regardless, I think this movie has been graded about as well as possible for the time. I noticed some increased blues (very minor) and increased brightness. This is stylized in this way; it gives the movie a filmic look and an almost '70s look which I really like. I love the way it looks. I think color fading around faces did show some minor depth errors, and the way light fades on walls looked a pinch-off. Just for reference, I'm using a Panasonic UB9000 and a professionally calibrated 77-inch LGC9 with Dolby Vision. Despite the fact that it was woefully underappreciated on release, by both critics and audiences alike – and remains somewhat so even to this day, despite the cult following – not everything about Hill’s film works. It’s far from perfect. Hill might state otherwise but it’s clear that there were several scenes left on the cutting-room floor – maybe not the thirty minutes that fans have been stirring rumours about for the past few decades, but there’s enough given away in the Trailer (where almost all of The Driver’s dialogue-less scenes now have him speak), and by the Alternate Opening that is available, to recognise that we’re just seeing what he wants us to see, and that this – despite the intentionally cool detachment – is not quite complete.The Mandalorian: The Complete Second Season (4K Steelbook – UHD-100) ( US/ UK) – 12/12/23 – N4K, DA Marking the first 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release from both MVD and 88 Films, Drive arrives in a new 4K transfer sourced from a 4K scan of the original camera negative. This looks to be the same transfer used on MVD’s previous Blu-ray release of the film, although this time the transfer is opened up to a 3840x2160 resolution aided by Dolby Vision HDR. Overall, this is the best the film has ever looked at home, pulling as much depth and clarity out of the source as possible. As mentioned previously, the aesthetic of the film can be a bit flat, with primaries usually looking muted and everything looking a bit soft. But the HEVC (H.265) codec handles it all capably, which is a delight to see from a debut 4K release.
