Got a question about choosing guinea pig pellets or nuggets over other types of guinea pig food? To help you learn more about feeding a healthy diet to your gorgeous guineas, we’ve put together some really useful answers from our nutrition team at Burgess, the pet care experts . What should a healthy diet for guinea pigs consist of? This feeder has a plug and drain that allows you to soak the hay easily. There is a choice of three regulator hole sizes – 70mm, 90mm or 100mm.

Your buns will also enjoy chomping on nuggets with tasty natural flavours such as mint, oregano and cranberry, along with hedgerow ingredients such as dandelion, nettle and lemon balm. Glebe Farm Hay by the Bale or Half Bale– Straight from the farm – ideal if youhave several guinea pigs and go through lots of hay. Grass hay is the most important part of a guinea pig’s diet and should form 80% of their daily diet. The best type of grass hay for adult guinea pigs is long stem Timothy Hay and Meadow Hay and this essential food source should ALWAYS be available to your guinea pigs at ALL times.

Apart from feeding hay, what else do rabbits need in their diet?

Limiting feed on a per head basis is best done with the help of a nutritionist to ensure your cattle maintain the proper body condition and meet their nutrient requirements. Success with limit-feeding is entirely dependent on having adequate bunk space. A horse’s diet needs to contain a good amount of fibre, and both haylage and hay can give your horse the fibre it needs. But, they don’t really have the same nutritional value. Suitable for indoor and outdoor use (-18 °C to +30 °C), this feeder is available with interchangeable feeding discs with holes of 70mm and 90mm. It has a watertight bung for soaking and draining hay, plus four fixing points that mean you can secure it to a fence post or stable wall. As little dust as possible:Dust is extremely bad for guinea pigs and can cause respiratory problems so even if it’s feeding hay as opposed to bedding, you should look at using a hay that has been dust-extracted or has the minimum amount of dust.

Each day, slightly reduce their old food and replace it with some of their new food. At the end of the transition period, your guinea pigs should be eating their new nuggets happily with no issues! What about guinea pig treats? Storing hay indoors is the best option for avoiding spoilage. But if you cannot keep all of your hay inside, other strategies can also help reduce spoilage. Reducing spoilage reduces waste, so it is important to remember that the outer portion of a bale contains a large proportion of the total hay in the bale. Hay isn’t usually wrapped in plastic so farmers have to make sure that it is as dry as possible, as this is usually the only way it is preserved. Although, some farmers do sell wrapped hay, and it kind of falls in between haylage and hay because it’s more moist than hay but less moist than haylage. Haylage is a lot easier on the stomach, as it is very easy to digest due to its higher moisture content The most efficient/best way to feed hay to cows is to supply hay using a raised cattle feeder every couple of days. Hay savings is one of the biggest contributors to efficiently feeding cattle hay. By keeping the hay contained, a correctly built cattle feeder prevents hay waste by disallowing cattle to stomp, spread out, or pee/poop on hay. 2. Smaller Amounts of Feed

Is haylage better than hay?

The grass used to make hay is cut at a much more mature stage so that it already starts off a little drier than haylage. It then gets left on the ground to dry further and is turned over a couple of times to make sure that it dries the whole way through. This helps get its moisture content right down. If your guinea pig refuses to eat hay there is something wrong. It could be one of a number of reasons but the first port of call is your vet. A few reasons why your guinea pig may not be eating their hay are: Avoid cheap bedding hay, which has poor nutritional value. Instead, go for deliciously nutritious dust-free hay for guinea pigs such as Timothy Hay, Meadow Hay, Green Harvest Hay, Hay with Dandelion & Marigold or Hay with Hedgerow Herbs – all nutrient-rich options that have been grown and harvested specifically as feeding hay. There are all sorts of temptingly tasty feeding hay and dried grass for rabbits to eat and enjoy and individual bunnies will no doubt have their favourites.

Monitor body condition scores and adjust feed accordingly to maintain cows at a body condition of 5/9 and heifers at a body condition of 6/9. While you may not be able to provide your good-doer ad-lib forage in the usual sense, it’s possible to make up for this by feeding little and often so he’s rarely left standing idle. Using double haynets can also slow him down, ensuring a steady intake of smaller amounts of forage. Keep it natural while nurturingIf your hay comes in a cardboard box, you can keep it in the box, providing you store it indoors where it is dry. If you do store it in an outdoor shed in its cardboard box, make sure it is well sealed, so nothing can get in, and that it is not likely to get damp. Recommended products A couple of dandelion leaves (ensure they have not been sprayed with pesticides or are from an area where wild rabbits graze, as they could carry disease) Measuring your forage quality allows you to target nutritional goals more effectively by matching forages to animal requirements. This targeted approach improves efficiency and gives insight into the need for supplementation. Work with your nutritionist to develop the most efficient system. Freshness: It should have a sweet fresh smell and not be at all musty. It should have some green colour to it. The green colour signifies larger amounts of vitamin A and C. Guinea pigs love the greener, sweeter and leafier hay.

However, it’s heavy, expensive, and can be difficult to clean. But, in general, it’s a great feeder to feed dairy or beef cattle. 700 DRB Cattle FeederProcessing or grinding hay is the most efficient method for limit-feeding, but rolling out bales on frozen ground is also an option. Large square balers are high-capacity machines that can harvest as much as 20 tons of hay per hour. Another thing to consider when weighing up whether haylage is better than hay is respiratory health. Hay is a larger source of respirable particles compared to haylage. Respirable particles are very small particles that are invisible to the naked eye and are a combination of things that could potentially be harmful to your horse’s respiratory health including mould spores and bacteria. Another option for overcoming this issue is to steam hay using a hay steamer e.g. Haygain, or a high temperature dried forage replacer such as Dengie Hi-Fi Senior or Pure Grass as high temperature drying produces a consistently clean forage source. When can I feed this year’s hay or haylage? You can safely transition your guinea pigs’ diet over a period of 7-10 days by gradually reducing the old food and replacing it with Burgess Excel guinea pig food. If you’re at all unsure about the best way of feeding your animal or have any concerns about specific nutritional requirements at different times of their life, ask your local veterinary practice for advice.
