Dittmar, Linda; Michaud, Gene (1990). From Hanoi to Hollywood: The Vietnam War in American Film. Rutgers University Press. p. 31. ISBN 9780813515878. Now, in terms of the audio quality on the 4K release. You’ll get a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 lossless surround mix, and not perhaps the Atmos you expected? Sometimes films just don’t need to be put in Atmos, in my opinion, when the film’s director is no longer around to decide or if they don’t approve of it being remixed. This happens to be one of those cases and the film works fine in a 5.1 configuration here, this time around in a lossless format for once, versus the uncompressed LPCM 5.1 sound mix found on the 2007 Blu-ray. Does it sound any better? Not really, but it still proves to be a somewhat impressive surround mix although does have a few limitations and flaws. Keep in mind that this film came from a Mono sound source, as hard as that is to believe for a 1987 film. While filming, Ermey had a car accident and broke several ribs, making him unavailable for four and a half months. [24] [43] Bruce Willis: Playboy Interview". Playboy. Playboy.com. As with the picture, the audio has had a varied past as well. The other editions have had a Dolby Digital mix, a Dolby True HD mix and of course the purists’ choice – a mono mix. For this new 4K edition Warner has given us a DTS HD Master Audio mix and a restored mono one as well. That’s good news and should satisfy the masses. I chose to listen to the DTS mix and wasn’t disappointed. Granted, it can’t hold a candle to some of today’s modern mixes, but I found a fullness and depth that I’d had ever experienced while watching this film. But if 6 speakers are a bit too much, the included mono offering should more than satisfy. Supplements: What are the extras? Speaking of which...one welcome addition to this 4K release is the film's original mono audio mix (a rarity among Warner releases), which has not been Michael Herr wrote of his work on the screenplay, "The substance was single-minded, the old and always serious problem of how you put into a film or a book the living, behaving presence of what Jung called The Shadow, the most accessible of archetypes, and the easiest to experience... War is the ultimate field of Shadow-activity, where all of its other activities lead you. As they expressed it in Vietnam, 'Yea, though I walk through the Valley of the Shadow of Death, I will fear no Evil, for I am the Evil'." [50] Music [ edit ]

I then moved on from the Panasonic to the legendary Oppo BDP-83, which had much better SD upconversion courtesy of its Anchor Bay VRS chipset (I still say that was the best DVD player I've ever used in any system; I still have that player, too, but it needs repair) -- but the Oppo ALSO allowed me to set the aspect ratio to one that kept 16:9 content original and stretched the 4:3 SD stuff. Here's the thing: We had/have a lot of 4:3 and non-anamorphic DVDs in the collection that I used to prefer be stretched to fill the 16:9 frame from side to side (for whatever reason, pillarboxing annoys me in a much larger sense than letterboxing ever did), but since owning this new Panasonic disc player and not being able to zoom or stretch these films in any way, I'm trying to mentally "justify" watching genuine 4:3 content with the pillarboxing and needing to move on from having to see such content stretched. Adam Baldwin as Sergeant "Animal Mother", a combat-hungry machine gunner who takes pride in killing enemy soldiers. Arnold Schwarzenegger was first considered for the role but turned it down in favor of a part in The Running Man. This includes: I don’t often find myself too impressed by Matthew Modine, but in this film, he won me over and showed his true potential. As the central character here, Modine must be our guide through the experience, especially the mental and emotional portions. He seems to fare very well in the later segments, but he shines when he first arrives at basic training, fresh off the boat, so to speak. I am surprised Modine was able to make the transitions needed with such effectiveness, but he does and as such, I have to give him much credit indeed. I don’t think he’s been too good since however, with a sparse amount of standout performances, but his work here is nothing short of excellent. Video: How does it look?

It's here that the film's HDR enhancement begins to take control, lending a more refined and controlled palette to some of the film's most famous The film also omits Rafterman's death; according to Jenkins, this allows viewers to reflect on Rafterman's personal growth and speculate on his future growth after the war. [86] In popular culture [ edit ] Some scenes in the book were removed from the screenplay or conflated with others. For example, Cowboy's introduction of the "Lusthog Squad" was markedly shortened and supplemented with material from other sections of the book. Although the book's third section was largely omitted, elements from it were inserted into other parts of the film. [86] For instance, the climactic episode with the sniper is a conflation of two sections of Parts II and III of the book. According to Jenkins, the film presents this passage more dramatically but in less gruesome detail than the novel. The 4K disc is the movie only and the included Blu-ray carries over the same supplements as the previous disc. Of course, there ARE ways around this issue -- we could have our Oppo Blu-ray player repaired and install that in our primary system to watch DVDs on (the Panasonic 4K player isn't that great of a DVD machine anyway, as none of their BD players were IMO), and I could, as stated, use the TV's picture controls to stretch out these 4:3 discs...but my preference was to have ONE primary player in the system that does it all (native 4K Blu-ray and upscaled DVD/Blu-ray) and not needing to have to touch the display's aspect ratio controls.
