You can have up to 50 loop layers with up to 5 minutes of recorded audio per layer, up to 20 minutes of total recorded audio per loop. Most standard expression pedals will work with the HeadRush MX5. We recommend the M-Audio EX-P expression pedal. In Advanced Mode, you can assign up to four parameters to each expression pedal (A and B). Moving the pedal will adjust all of its assigned parameters simultaneously. Using the toe switch will select the other expression pedal and leave the current pedal’s parameters active and at their maximum values. As is often the case with digital modelling, the sky is the limit when it comes to sounds, but it’s how the MX5 arranges its sounds that makes it particularly effective. The technological disruption in guitar gear does not just see analogue hardware units replaced by digital emulations, it also yields regular updates to firmware and functionality in the digital realm. Like the Gigboard and the Pedalboard, the new MX5 features 46 amplifier models, 15 cabinet models (each with 10 microphone emulations), 300 impulse responses, and 63 modelled effects. Also like its stablemates, the MX5 can store a virtually unlimited number of third‑party IRs alongside those from the factory. Using the built‑in USB Transfer Function, which makes the unit appear as an external drive to Windows or Mac computers, the onboard IRs can be copied, dragged and dropped to and from the computer and the MX5’s onboard Impulse Responses folder.
Models can be freely combined to form a Rig (HeadRush’s term for a preset), a process that is based around the touchscreen, with or without the use of the encoder knob. Each rig has 11 slots, and these can be arranged as a single 11‑slot chain, a chain of three that then splits into two parallel three‑slot chains, each feeding a two‑channel stereo mixer, whose output feeds the final two slots, or two parallel four‑slot chains, which are mixed together to feed a final three‑slot chain. Saved rigs are stored in the MX5’s Rigs folder. Once you’ve built your rigs, you can group these into Setlists, which are also stored in their own eponymous folder. Naturally, the Setlist feature is useful in live situations, but it also gives you an extremely convenient way of organising rigs. As with IRs, Rigs and Setlists can be managed on a USB‑connected computer. For customers in outlying areas of the country, the price of the Extended Warranty may be marginally higher, due to the potential for higher collection and redelivery transport costs. The touchscreen may be smaller than those of the larger Headrush devices but it remains easy to read and use.

If you connect an external expression pedal to this ¼" input, the external expression will control parameters assigned to expression pedal B. When an external expression pedal is connected, the internal expression pedal will only control parameters assigned to expression pedal A. Yes, reverb/delay spillover can be enabled/disabled for each rig by tapping the TAIL button in the rig view. The MX5 feels like a more powerful beast than the full-fat floorboard did onits original release. It’s priced competitively, and can replace several pedals on a compact ’board.
