So that is the one I wanted to get, Sorted, or so I thought. But that is when the difficulties started, the test was a few years ago, and it is now difficult for me to identify that exact filter amongst their current range. What a mess Hoya's UV filter range seems to be in, it is as if the marketing boys have been let loose. There are 6 different Hoya UV filter types; HMC UV-c, HMC UV-0, HD, Pro1, SuperPro1, Fusion Antistatic! Although it's usual for photographers to use filters to protect their lenses from scratches, thumbprints, and dust, the real benefit lies in the way filters improve images and, in some instances, achieve effects that even the best photo editing suites cannot replicate. There are many different types of lens filters, each for a specific purpose.

Popular brands include Hoya, Cokin, Kenko, Zeiss, Sigma, and many more. Some are designed to protect lenses against dirt, dust, or moisture, while others change the properties of light as seen by camera sensors, while yet others create special effects. Common filters used by photographers include: That was until I found the following excellent comprehensive LensTip 72mm UV filter test article which showed me that Hoya was the way to go: The HD Mk II UV is the ultimate protection for your front-lens element against scratches, dirt and bumps. The great addition compared to a regular protector is that the filter also perfectly cuts out UV light, reducing the haze and blue colour cast which can be caused by it in certain settings, giving you ultimately a sharper image. Once attached a UV filter can essentially be forgotten about as they rarely impact image quality of interfere with any aspect of image making. They will reduce haze or blue tones sometimes visible in daylight photography. If your shot requires you to photography directly into sunlight, to capture a sun-star for example, you might need to remove the filter to avoid lens flare. If another filter is required for a particular shot, such as a circular polariser which reduces reflections, the first filter should be removed and stored in an appropriate wrap or case. Alternatively some are available with dual threads, allowing a second filter to be threaded onto the front, the lens now having two different filters attached. Neutral density filters (ND): Dark filters that reduce the amount of light the sensor receives so larger apertures and slower shutter speeds can be used to reduce the depth of field or to create motion blur Filter absorbs the ultraviolet rays which often makes outdoor photographs hazy and indistinct. This multi-purpose, all-around filter can serves as a permanent lens protector. While designed specifically for digital cameras the Pro1 Digital series can be used on film cameras as well. Just like camera lenses, pretty much all photographic filters feature multi-layer coatings. However, this is a potential weak spot. While the glass may be strong, coatings can be relatively fragile and can easily get scratched or depleted simply by regular cleaning. Again, this Hoya UV filter comes to the fore with no less than 32 layers of super-tough nano-structure coatings applied to both sides of the glass. As well as ensuring optimum optical performance, the coatings repel moisture and grease and are rated at 800 per cent more scratch-resistant then regular coatings. Its sharp UV cut property cuts out the UV light while not having any negative effect on the colours in the visible light spectrum, so there will never be an unwanted change of colours in your image. As UV light can potentially cause a haze and blue colour cast under certain conditions, the filter will reduce such negative effects which will make your final image ultimately sharper and clearer. HIGH-TRANSMITTANCE COATING I have forgotten the details, but I remember someone on this forum saying that he solved the purple fringing problem with a strong UV cutoff filter (I've forgotten the filter number) - I think he was talking about a Panasonic lens, but I think the principle would work with any lens that suffers excessive purple fringing.Unfortunately, I would guess that the more specialised filters may be less good at reducing flare, even if you can find them. Ultra thin filter frames to help avoid vignetting on super wide angle lenses are also designed to hold a lens cap. The HOYA HD Mk II UV is equipped with a special chemically enhanced optical glass that is four times stronger than normal glass, providing a superior level of protection.
