Peel 2 onions and 4 cloves of garlic, then finely slice with 1 to 2 fresh red chillies and the stalks from 1 bunch of fresh coriander (reserving the leaves for later). Carrots. We like to use a vegetable/potato peeler to peel thin ribbons from the entirety of two average sized carrots – the thin shavings cook incredibly fast in the simmering sauce. The “HP” in HP Sauce stands for “Houses of Parliament”, which are featured prominently on the bottle. Let’s start with what didn’t work. We know HP Sauce (a.k.a. brown sauce) is a beloved British condiment lovely with bacon sandwiches or bangers and mash. But it just doesn’t mesh with the steak we cooked. The molasses flavor proved overpowering for the brawniness of our ribeye; even though there’s malt vinegar among the ingredients, it wasn’t enough acid to cut through. Brown sauce has a lot of utility in everyday dishes, but for a fatty steak it’s really not the right fit. We also approached A.1. Bold & Spicy Sauce with eager anticipation, but the Tabasco—surprisingly—was not a good dance partner with beef. It’s not the vinegar, but the heat that’s the distraction. It explains why most steak sauces aren’t predominantly spicy.

It’s also a delicious vegetarian dinner. You can saute whatever veggies you have on hand – I’m partial to curry made with sliced zucchini, green beans, bamboo shoots and broccoli – but use whatever veggies you’d like. Saute them until just crisp-tender and then let simmer in the homemade curry sauce.Though it's a minor ingredient, the tamarind is probably the biggest contributor to the difference in flavour – though HP Sauce is also marginally sweeter. Keep in mind that there are also a few different variants of HP Sauce, and in this case, we're referring to the original, “basic HP Sauce”. Wipe the pan with kitchen paper and spray with a little more low-calorie cooking spray. Add the tofu and its marinade and cook for 2 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the soy sauce has evaporated and the tofu is slightly caramelised. Bell/sweet peppers. Cut into strips, sauté along with the onion and proceed with the recipe. Yellow or red pepper work best. Another popular sauce that contains even more sugar than ketchup. A single tablespoon contains around 4.7g of carbs. Finding keto-friendly alternatives is a bit more difficult as the sugar needs to be replaced with sweetener. Getting the balance right can lead to some odd flavours and strange aftertaste. While the sauce and rice are cooking, cook the green beans in a saucepan of boiling water for 5 minutes, then drain well.

There are low carb no added sugar versions available, as well as ones with 0 sugar which use sweeteners instead. Please note that the nutrition informationis based on the sausages being divided into 4 bowls, with one bowl being one serve. The nutritional information is an estimate only and does not take into account any additional toppings or sides served with the sausages.Sauté.Cook the diced onion until soft, stir in the curry powder and cook for another minute before adding the coconut milk. Likewise, West Yorkshire, County Durham and Tyne and Wear would have been expected to be Gravy areas on this cultural assumption. Oxfordshire was an unlikely addition to the Mushy Peas belt, but we had enough responses to say this probably isn’t an outlier. Cornwall’s association with fish and chips by the sea as a coastal county with a large tourism sector probably explains their membership, while Nottinghamshire, East Yorkshire and Lincolnshire were expected to generally be Mushy Peas areas in any case. What makes mayo a great keto sauce is that it is naturally low in carbs. A 100g serving only contains around 1.3g of carbs but a whopping 720 calories! Lighter versions are available that contain fewer calories by removing some of the fat with sugar. Resulting in a carb count of around 3-4g per 100g. HP sauce– a British brown sauce made with tomato and tamarind. It has a taste similar to a blend of Worcestershire sauce and BBQ sauce with a hint of pepper and spices. In this recipe, HP sauce is used to balance the gravy with a tart/sweet flavour, as well as adding depth and richness. Alternatively, tomato sauce, ketchup or Worcestershire sauce can be used.

Cauliflower. Sauté small florets with the onion, proceed with the recipe. Alternatively, roast florets and add them to the curry sauce once it has reduced to your liking. Curry powder –the key ingredient that gives the sauce its signature curry flavour. For traditional keens curried sausages, use Keens traditional curry powder (mild, not hot). Bright orange tins of Keens curry powder can be found in the spice aisle of Australian supermarkets and online. Any type of curry powder spice blend will work, but the flavour of the sauce may vary slightly from brand to brand. There is nothing authentic about this Chinese curry sauce. Britain might have a proud maritime history, with a melting pot of food cultures incorporating all sorts of dishes from East and West, but sometimes they are adapted into something unrecognizably different from the original. This is one example; there is nothing Chinese or Indian about it. Doesn’t mean it’s not good, though. So if you’re feeling saucy, read on to find serving suggestions and recipe ideas to help you make a meal out of the following Slimming World sauces:

The Slimming World Free Food range, available exclusively at Iceland, was made for those days when cooking from scratch just isn’t on the menu. It means that you can always have a fuss-free, slimming-friendly option ready and waiting in your freezer. Even better, everything in the food range (which includes meals, meats, sides, soups and sauces, plus lunch bowls, tray bakes and ‘ready to cook’ dishes – phew!) is completely Free.

Don’t let “starter recipe” disappoint you – this curry is still creamy, comforting, aromatic and delicious. The cumin and the cinnamon give it an unexpected little zip and zest. You’ll love it. Spray the pan with more low-calorie cooking spray, add the onion, peppers, sugar snaps and a little water and stir-fry for 3-4 minutes. Add the pak choi and peas and stir-fry for 1 minute. The map above shows the regional breakdown of which sauce, topping or condiment is the most popular for chip shop chips in the UK. The results are based on a reddit poll taken between 10-12 February 2018, which resulted in a total of 670 accepted responses. Tip: For a non-vegetarian version, swap the tofu for cooked tiger prawns and cubes of lean ham, visible fat removed. Meanwhile, cook the carrot and sugar snap peas in a saucepan of boiling water over a high heat for 2 minutes. Drain well.

A Variety Of Flavours

The Peri-Peri sauce can even be used as a marinade for meat or you can just brush it on towards the end of cooking. Similarly, Nando’s do actually sell marinade versions of most of their sauces but they contain around 7g per 100g. I find it’s better to use their sauce and water it down (if needed) when marinating meat.
