About this deal

Obviously, I've only viewed one episode - and this may remain the case for all eternity - but it was a highly enjoyable watch and provided further proof that Terry and Hugh were comedy performers of some renown. A wholesome sitcom that, despite the obvious dating, retains that magisterial handling of comedy narrative and has left me wanting to see more. The level of available detail surrounding the series is fairly minimal - hence the number of gaps in my coverage - so if you've got any more insights and information get in touch!

Synopsis currently unavailable, this episode was recovered in July 2017 by BBC South producer and presenter Richard Latto. Hugh and I ran for six series between 1962 - 67 before writer John Chapman decided to call time on the partnership. However, less than a year later, he decided there was still mileage in the duo and drafted them into a world of espionage in Hugh and I Spy, the title itself being a knowing nod to the US TV series I Spy. Terry and Hugh were more than up for a reunion as Terry noted when he said "The trouble when you're on your own is that people are always saying: where's the other one? They think they are only getting half their money's worth". The convention aims to put these vulnerable film treasures in the spotlight and create a support network to help older collectors ensure their films will be preserved in the future. Hugely popular long-running comedy series starring former stage partners Hugh Lloyd and Terry Scott as a type of modern day Laurel and Hardy double-act, forever finding themselves in hot water and situations that tested their friendship to the limits. They have a simple and easily led lodger, Hugh Lloyd, who works at a local aircraft factory. The two often try and make money through one of Scott's schemes. Their next door neighbours, the Crispins and the Wormolds, also make frequent appearances.

Series 1, Episode 5 - A Fete Worse Than Death

Note: This episode was initially scheduled to air on the 18/1/1964 but was postponed. [11] Subsequently it transmitted after 'Coal Comfort' which was originally scheduled to be shown following this episode. Perhaps the best lines were reserved for Fred Emney who appeared in several episodes and is given the codename Chihuahua for 'Tea or Coffin'. A great, deluded twit in the greatest British comedy traditions, Fred Emney - looking like Winston Churchill's doppelganger here - is perhaps even more bumbling than Terry and Hugh and is one of the highlights of the episode. For some reason, I also found Hugh's feigned condition of "twinges in the Ganges" far funnier than I should have done, but even an innuendo which doesn't even make sense can still be highly fun at the right moment. On 20 October 2023, the first episode of the third Series, 'New Year Resolutions' was discovered & announced at the Film is Fabulous event. [9] Episodes [ edit ]

HC: Good. That's reassuring. Nothing is as simple as it seems. It's like everyone thinking Strawberry Fields was about acid but Strawberry Fields was a lunatic asylum behind John Lennon's aunt's house where he used to live. He used to nip over the wall and play in the grounds there. The song's just another song about childhood memories. People always try to make their own interpretations fit. We found them in the collections of people who have sadly passed away and recovered them before they were lost again in house clearances." Unless you happen to be very well off, you have to have a second job or your own business. There aren't enough roles to provide full time employment. Some producers even give Asian roles to English actors who then speak their lines with an I instead of an R" Organisers of this weekend's Film is Fabulous! convention, working in conjunction with specialist researchers and Leicester's De Montfort University's Cinema and Television History Institute, found film prints amongst the archives of recently deceased film collectors. It's the day of Terry's cousin Ivy's wedding, and he has been volunteered by her mother Mavis to host the wedding reception, without letting him know in advance. Chaos soon abounds when Ivy rekindles her former adoration for Hugh. Also features Sheila Steafel as Ivy. HC: Sometimes I find that Dave will play exactly the same tune as I have played on a demo. But that's bound to happen after a long period. Synopsis currently unavailable, this episode was recovered by Kaleidoscope in December 2021. Also features Wendy Richard as Norma Crispin. Of almost 80 episodes produced over 7 series, only 24 remain in the BBC's archives. 20 of these are included: all but the sixth episode of Series 1, and the complete Series 2. After cashing in on their winnings, Hugh and Terry embark on the first leg of their round the world cruise. This series follows a continuous eight part story arc.

As such, a group of avid film collectors, together experts from CATHI are staging Film is Fabulous! – a film event at Leicester’s Phoenix Cinema, on Sunday 29 October 2023. HC: Not really. I'm completely self-obsessed with my own lyrics. If I tried to interpret other people's lyrics I'd probably get it as wrong as people do when they think they understand mine.

Terry discovers that the Crispins have been allowed to join his local Bowls club, so he decides to take up Golf instead.

Mr Crispin is a loud mouth who thinks violence will solve a problem, Mrs Crispin is a snob and their daughter Norma is constantly chased after by men. On the other side, the Wormolds are an old couple with Harold being very doddery. Hugh is smitten for the girl next door, Norma Crispin. Terry disapproves of his antics and secretly signs him up to a marriage bureau. Also features Jill Curzon as Norma Crispin, Wallas Eaton as Arthur Crispin, Mollie Sugden as Ethel Crispin and Irene Handl as Miss Willow. Terry decides to become a prison visitor to reform convicts. His first try is a hard man ( Kenneth J. Warren) who he manages to upset. When that convict escapes a few weeks later, he comes to Terry's house armed with a gun and takes them all hostage. Husband Harold Wormold has vanished from the series and brother-in-law Cecil has taken his place with Haig looking like his "LeClerc" role in 'Allo 'Allo!, twenty years later.

Series 2

A royal visit is taking place in Tooting, and 33 Lobelia Avenue has been chosen as the destination to host the royal party for afternoon tea. Hugh and Terry prepare for the visit, whilst their neighbours, the Crispins try to get involved. HC: Yeah, that sounds pretty good (laughs). Look it's been very nice talking but I don't think I've got anything else to contribute. Is that very rude of me? HC: I did a solo single basically because the others wouldn't do it. We didn't go into it. They just didn't like it. Aunt Maude, a long lost relative of Terry of whom he's never heard of before, travels from her home in Australia to pay him and Mrs Scott a visit, and it is discovered that she is quite wealthy.
