But man, the work stuff was good, especially about the start of his career and Evil Dead. So fascinating. I really enjoyed it. The book offers insights into the world of independent filmmaking and the life of a “B” actor, but most importantly it succeeds as an evocative memoir that allows the reader to know Campbell.” So anyway, Bruce Campbell is one of my favorite actors. Not the best actor in the world, mind you, but a favorite because: 1) He’s kind of an underdog. If you’re a fan, you can see his guest spot on “The X-Files” and be like, “thataway Bruce.” 2) He brought as much to the Evil Dead Campbell reveals some things that are definitely of interest. I'm always interested in what the life of an actor is like (how movies are made when it's winter and what kinds of things have to happen behind the scenes to make a movie), including what kind of variation there is to actors' behavior (Bruce mentions a few actors who stay on the set even when they don't have to, and some who disappear into their trailer as soon as the director yells cut). He talks about how some actors memorize their lines completely and how some almost don't at all, and how it took four years to make his first movie and some time after that before it broke even, money-wise. If you enjoyed this kind of information from Cary Elwes' As You Wish or Penny Marshall's My Mother Was Nuts, you might also like it here. In late 2016, Campbell announced that he would be releasing a third book, Hail to the Chin: Further Confessions of a B Movie Actor, which will detail his life from where If Chins Could Kill ended. Hail to the Chin was released in August 2017, and accompanied by a book tour across the United States and Europe. [45]

Though it offers few revelations about the details of Campbell's personal life, this entertaining and witty Hollywood memoir combines his life story with how-to guidance on making independent films and becoming a pop culture cult hero. Campbell began working in show business as a teenager, and in high school became friends with future director Sam Raimi, with whom he eventually co-produced the 1982 cult horror hit Evil Dead, in which Campbell starred. Despite his wry, modest sense of humor—Campbell recognizes the peculiar place that Evil Dead At any rate, I think this is my very favorite celebrity autobiography, because it's the story of someone who has a great career without ever quite reaching A-list status. Campbell has been involved in many different aspects of filmmaking and television, including directing, and his insider's take is refreshing as well as funny. Since I knew that it was going to be reissued, I also had a look at the story being told and decided to condense, move, or clarify some chapters, all or in part. I also tried to add a hint of historical context, since it has been a decade and a half since Chins first came out. While not a big fan of many of his films (I was never really a Deadite) I do like others and find his take here interesting, readable and often humorous. Pretty good read. There is a wealth of insider information on how Hollywood works and the inside story on what it takes to be a successful actor. Patten, Dominic (October 7, 2016). "Starz Renews 'Ash Vs. Evil Dead' For Third Season – NY Comic-Con". Deadline . Retrieved October 8, 2016. Bruce Campbell is like Stephen King in that the thing that he's best known and most loved for happened super early in his career. King has The Shining and The Stand, his two big hits, and Bruce Campbell has the Evil Dead franchise and Brisco County Jr. If Chins Could Kill: Confessions of a B Movie Actor is the great BC's autobiography. He is very upfront about his intent to show the "blue-collar Hollywood" here. What he also reveals is that he was once just a typical kid growing up in Michigan, with perhaps an atypical talent for plotting, campaigning, jerri-rigging and otherwise pulling off one kind of mischief or another. He also seems to have had a lot of friends who shared his creative spirit and interest in making Super 8 movies (yes, that includes Spiderman's director Sam Raimi). Combine all these factors with a self-admitted intention to goof off for a living, and you have the makings of the only kind of film crew capable of making the likes of Evil Dead: offbeat, and forced by a shoestring budget to improvise and innovate. It also helped that there wasn't some kind of filmmaking bigshot hanging around to point out why what they were attempting was impossible. trilogy, by which I really mean Army of Darkness and Evil Dead 2, as any other actor I can think of has brought to any other series movies.

Campbell was also drawn in the Marvel Zombie comics as his character, Ash Williams. He is featured in five comics, all in the series Marvel Zombies vs. Army of Darkness. In them, he fights alongside the Marvel heroes against the heroes and people who have become zombies (deadites) while in search of the Necronomicon (Book of the Names of the Dead). [9] Campbell also played as Coach Boomer in the movie “Sky High”. If Chins Could Kill: Confessions of a B Movie Actor is my first book, and I invite you to ride with me through the choppy waters of blue collar Hollywood. Campbell had a major voice role for the 2009 animated adaptation of the children's book Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, and a supporting voice role for Pixar's Cars 2. [17]
