Shore fishing beach shelters shouldn’t be confused with standard beach or garden shelters that can typically be bought very cheaply. These simply won’t do the same job or be as durable as purpose-designed fishing shelters. This shelter is the big brother of the successful Ian Golds Igloo, and, as the name suggests, it really is big. Comfortably the biggest in this test, it’s also the heaviest by half a pound. The original Igloo was renowned for being generously proportioned, but the Bigloo has two-and-a-half square metres of floor space, although it is laid out in a different manner. However, this is a very tall shelter and most adults will be able to stand up in it.

In addition to the interior space, the shelter comes with a 40cm sand skirt so that you are not getting the luggage you are storing inside the shelter covered in dirt and sand. To make carrying to the beach that much easier, the tent comes in a nylon carry. The grey and orange Imax colours look very smart and give the Storm Safe a distinctive look on the beach

I’ve owned my Ron Thompson Beach Shelter for well over a year now and, honestly, only used it for the first time recently. Why? Because I’m one of these pig-headed types of blokes who often sees using items that make my angling a bit more comfortable as ‘being a wimp’, despite telling others that they should use them and also despite using other items, such as handwarmers and a luxury sleeping bag (when carp fishing) and wondering how I ever did without them! The Imax Storm Safe has the now classic domed beach shelter shape which is a design proven to protect you from wind and rain. Overall the Imax FR is a great shelter lightweight, waterproof, easy to erect in a bad weather and affordable. The shape of the shelter offers great head room. Personally for me this has replaced the Igloo at the top of the shelter chart as No.1. Compared with the bivvies used by carp anglers, shore shelters are generally small and lightweight and have relatively compact ‘footprints’. However, there are some very substantial shelters on the market that do offer more space, but this inevitably comes at a cost in respect of extra weight and bigger size, even when folded down. Larger shelters are probably worth considering if you fish long sessions on particular beach marks regularly, whereas smaller, lighter shelters are ideal for shorter sessions. Sea fishing is often seen as a pursuit of hard, or mad, men! Standing on a freezing cold beach in the rain isn’t everyone’s idea of fun and, however much you enjoy it yourself, it’s hard to argue with someone who tells you you’re crazy for doing it!
