About this deal

With trauma too often overlooked and subsequently misdiagnosed, this manual provides much needed clarity on the ways in which trauma impacts the individual." abide by ethical guidelines ni al of their work to avoid abuse, harm, exploitation, bullying, discrimination and violence. One of the most powerful impacts of APTI approaches is to validate and depathologise normal, natural responses to human distress.

We always hear ‘1 in 4 girls will be abused’ or ‘1 in 3 women will be raped’ - but we never hear ‘1 in X men are rapists’. All of our stats are based on victims, but no one wants to talk about the sheer amount of abusers - millions of them in our societies. The layout of the book is accessible and easy on the eyes apart from most of the figures which are of low visual quality and sometimes blurred. Trauma informed approach is so desperately needed in society to prevent barriers to employment, adoption, education, housing and so much more. Peer reviewed by 30 academics, professionals, trauma experts and people who have lived experience of trauma

The service is well-informed, well-educated and provides an evidence-based approach to trauma, distress, abuse, harm, and oppression. When I was younger, I would have described myself as a social constructionist. I recognised that so much of the world was socially constructed using language and ideas, and this intrigued me. However, when I was 25 years old, I met a Professor who challenged me about social constructionism, and I found that I couldn't answer their questions. This forced me to rethink. I realised that not everything in the world is socially constructed, because some things sit outside of our social ideas and constructs. A good example would be gravity. Or Oxygen. These are things that will continue to behave and exist without our constructions of them. We could argue that gravity was socially constructed, but it wouldn't change how it worked. Gravity would still impact our bodies and our world. We would still hurtle to the ground if we decided that gravity was simply a socially constructed idea of humans. One issue with the structure is that there is no cross-referencing system, so the language you use to look up a particular response or coping mechanism needs to match the opinions of the authors. If you look up something which isn't there, keep searching as you may find it under a different phrase or heading. The main bulk of the book is two A-Z lists of trauma causes and trauma responses. Other sections include signs of trauma in infants and toddlers, a list of health problems which can occur/flare up because of trauma, health problems which are typically overlooked, tools for exploring/assessing trauma, and an overview of different types of therapy. There is quite a lot of repetition across all sections of the book, however, this is understandable given that the book is intended to be used as more of a reference manual which you delve into from time to time rather than reading from cover to cover. The ITIM offers a vision for a more relational, creative, non-blaming and just approach to working with traumatised people and systems."

As the authors say at the outset, “Everything must start somewhere” and this book is an excellent beginning to broaden thinking in a trauma informed way. It is a resource for practitioners who are prepared to be open minded and who want to understand more about human experience generally and the impact of trauma specifically. It has so much to offer in terms of learning, all provided with a sound evidence base. There truly is something for everyone.” – Fiona Gwinnett, CEO of Wight DASH Drawing on systemic ideas to understand our lived experience, this is a well researched and hopeful resource. Peer review was undertaken in February and March 2023 with 30 clinicians, professionals, academics and those with lived experience of trauma. The ITIM is the first non-diagnostic, anti-pathology, anti-oppressive manual of mental health in the world I remember spending a lot of time trying to understand the differences between liberal and radical feminism, and trying to figure out which book, and which author, was which. I was probably 25 years old when I realised I leant more naturally towards radical feminist principles. I saw female oppression as a global phenomenon which was supported and encouraged by huge patriarchal structures which needed to be dismantled for us all to move forward .

The manual describes, explains, and explores everything from nightmares to self-harming in an A-Z of emotions, thoughts and behaviours that are common in traumatised and distressed people. This edition also includes diagrams, theories and peer reviewed evidence throughout.

Overall, Dr. Taylor's book is a refreshing change from the standard approach to mental health, and I am excited to see where her ideas take us in the future." THIS is the real reason why sexual violence and child abuse is so common - not because victims have ‘vulnerabilities’, but because there are millions of perpetrators in every corner of our lives. Subsequent chapters look at the various models of mental health, identifying basic human emotions, distressing traumas, trauma responses and coping, effects on babies and toddlers, physical responses to trauma and distress, questionnaires and measurement tools, medication is B.A.D., bias & oppression, and how to actually support traumatised and distressed people. Whilst we might not like this stats and results, we cannot continue in our sector without accurate estimates of how many people are abusive and dangerous. An incredible step forward for trauma informed practitioners. The authors are high achieving academics with a vast amount of experience working directly supporting with people who have experienced trauma. The manual describes, explains, and explores everything from nightmares to self-harming in an A-Z of emotions, thoughts and behaviours that are common in traumatised and distressed people. This edition also includes diagrams, theories, tools, and peer reviewed evidence throughout. Dr Jessica Taylor has since featured in many documentaries, news programmes and discussion shows, focussing on misogyny, male violence against women, victim blaming and trauma of women and girls including Sky, BBC, ITV, Channel 4, Channel 5 and MTV.
