This book is absolutely wonderful! In this tale we meet fluke! Fluke is a tiny puppy fresh into the world, but he's not like an ordinary puppy he's different. We then follow Fluke on his vast adventures and find out just what fluke is and why he was a puppy, and along the way we meet some really amazing characters as well as some really nutty ones too.

Written entirely in the first-person-perspective of Fluke, the tale is an endearing and emotive one that initially plays with a very definite coming-of-age theme. For the first half of the novel, the various adventures that Fluke finds himself within are both exciting and heart-warming, as well as enabling Herbert to really build upon the characterisation of Fluke. Meeting Rumbo, their subsequent friendship and time spent together, builds further tight bonds with the reader from early on. Much of the book is filled with Fluke’s philosophizing on the relationship between humans and dogs. He wonders why dogs are often used as negative metaphors. Why do dogs, who are the closest to humans of all animals, come in for so much derision. His final question: Is it because we are more like you than any other living creature? However, life on the streets has become more of an adventure now than the day-to-day struggle it once was for Fluke. Stealing meat from the butchers, terrorising the pedestrians and relaxing in the shade of the scrap-yard with Rumbo. Everything seems to be falling into place for Fluke.Reincarnation: A big theme in the film, as the main character upon his death reincarnates as a Golden Retriever. A minor one for Fluke, but he doesn't like it when a man deliberately steps on Rumbo's tail. Fluke matures into an adult dog and eventually realizes that he was once a man named Thomas P. Johnson, who died in a car crash. The novel itself centres on Fluke, a mongrel who wanders the streets, driven by hunger and hunting a quarry he can not define. But he was once something more and in the depths of his consciousness there’s a memory clawing its way to the surface, tormenting him, refusing to let him rest. It is the memory of what he had once been. A man. The resulting final stages of the storyline are powerfully emotive, with a wealth of understanding for the deep bonds that have now formed with our principal character and narrator – Fluke. With his own emotional attachments to the story (with both the characters of Fluke and Rumbo) Herbert ends the novel with a monumentally heart-warming and beautifully concluding ending.
