Description

While all those in the Cabinet at the time recall moments when they realised the war could be lost, they also recall the strength of Thatcher throughout it. Lord Tebbit calls her “a very effective war leader”. We were all appalled. Our first reaction was how we could avoid this crisis diplomatically and a message was composed for Reagan. Reflecting in 2021 on the publication of her diaries, Swire wrote, "I was totally unprepared for the headlines that followed. It felt at times as if my wings were made of wax and feathers, that the sun had melted them and there was no shortage of hands pressing down on my head to keep me from resurfacing from a deep ocean. To be confronted with such a distorted picture of my real self was challenging to say the least." [15] Personal life [ edit ] The post was created in 1964 as successor to the posts of Minister for Coordination of Defence and Minister of Defence. It replaced the positions of First Lord of the Admiralty, Secretary of State for War and Secretary of State for Air, as the Admiralty, War Office and Air Ministry were merged into the Ministry of Defence (the Secretary of State for War had already ceased to be a cabinet position in 1946, with the creation of the cabinet-level Minister of Defence).

Much has been said and written of Thatcher’s steeliness after becoming a war leader, but there were moments when the doubt did show. Of course it was difficult and dangerous for all the soldiers and sailors and airmen who went down there. We didn't have a dangerous time, but we had a very difficult time. The son of Richard Nott and Phyllis née Francis, Nott was educated at Bradfield College and was commissioned as a regular officer in the 2nd Gurkha Rifles in Malaysia (1952–1956). He left to study law and economics at Trinity College, Cambridge, where he was President of the Cambridge Union Society. At Cambridge he met his future wife Miloshka, herself a refugee from Communist Slovenia (Yugoslavia). They have two sons and a daughter.

Sir John William Frederic Nott KCB [1] (born 1 February 1932) is a former British Conservative Party politician. He was well known in the late 1970s and early 1980s. He was Secretary of State for Defence during the Argentine invasion of the Falkland Islands and the Falklands War in the Margaret Thatcher cabinet. Before going to university, Nott served as a Lieutenant in the 2nd Gurkha Rifles during the Malayan emergency, (1952-56). He then went up to Trinity College from 1957 to 1959 to read Law and Economics and was also President of the Cambridge Union in his final year. He was then called to the Bar in the Inner Temple in 1959 and in the following year became a General Manager at the Merchant Bankers S. G. Warburg and Company Limited, staying at Warburgs until 1966. Nott was portrayed by Clive Merrison in the 2002 BBC production of Ian Curteis's controversial The Falklands Play. [11] The first few days were very hectic. I flew down to Portsmouth to see the task force being prepared, but the famous occasion was the Saturday debate where the whole House of Commons was baying for the blood of the government for allowing this to happen and I was the fall guy really.

Asked what the mood in Cabinet was as the news of victory came through, Lord Tebbit makes reference to more recent celebrations in Downing Street Cohan, William D. (3 April 2008).
