About this deal

On the whole, this is an inoffensive whisky that offers a little more complexity and bite than the 10 year old, yet it simply has not been given a chance to show significant progression. As it is also bottled at 40%, the cask influence is muted (tired old wood?), and as a result everything feels a bit dull. Those who want something light and easy going will likely prefer the 10 year old, whilst there is not enough depth here to satisfy more journeyed whisky enthusiasts. In the end, you’re expected to pay more money for a slightly bigger age statement, without finding a sufficient improvement in quality. In 2018 a new business hub opened in Craighouse consisting of four units adjacent to the community petrol pumps. These currently house three local businesses - a photography gallery, Deer Island rum distillery, and a craft shop - as well as the local bus garage.

Like all inhabited Hebridean islands, Jura has its own indigenous tradition of Gaelic song and poetry. [74] [75] Since 1993 it has also been the home of the Jura Music Festival, [76] which takes place annually in September. Since 2019 the Highlands and Islands Transport Partnership (HITRANS) have had an office in Craighouse which houses the Scottish Islands Passport project. Full disclosure: I was sent the whiskies featured in this article free of charge. As always I will strive to give an honest opinion on the quality of the drams and the value for money they represent. Smell: Some honeyed malt to begin with. A little bit woody. Sawdust even. Then apple and citrus comes through. Walnut. Leather. A few gentle wisps of smoke. Still owned by the Fletcher family who had rented it to Orwell, the four bedroom Barnhill house is available for rent but is somewhat primitive for this era. A generator supplies electricity, the small refrigerator is gas-powered and heat is provided by a coal-fired Rayburn. [39] The original look and feel of the house has been retained. "If you stay here, you're really treading in Orwell's footsteps. He would recognise the place instantly if he were to step through the door today," Orwell Society member Damaris Fletcher told The Guardian. The Jura distillery is located on the Hebredean isle of Jura and was founded in 1810 by Archibald Campbell. It was originally called the Small Isles distillery after the numerous islands located in Craighouse Bay, which the distillery sits on and overlooks. It was closed for a long period between 1901 and 1960, at which point it was rebuilt using a design by renowned post-War distillery architect William Delmé-Evans. It was only then renamed as Jura. Evidence of settlements on Jura dating from the Mesolithic period was first uncovered by the English archaeologist John Mercer in the 1960s. [21] There is a Neolithic chambered cairn at Poll a' Cheo in the southwest of the island. [22] The colour is a deep golden yellow and the nose is instantly sugary and sweet. Aromas of icing sugar and butterscotch dominate with a underlying whiff of soft and sweet peat smoke. Depth is added by an almond-like nuttiness, dried orange peel and warming spices (think of clove and cinnamon especially), plus hints cranberry and pot pourri. The Isle Of Jura is also known for The Paps of Jura, and as being the location where George Orwell escaped the noise and distraction to finish his classic dystopian novel 1984.

In his later life, George Orwell moved to Barnhill, on Jura, living there intermittently from 1946. During that time he was critically ill with tuberculosis. Orwell left Jura in January 1949 to get treatment at a sanatorium in Gloucestershire and never returned to the island. There is plenty going on with richness and softness being complimented well by a distinct but underlying gentle peat smoke. We look forward to sampling a couple of the other whiskies in the new(ish) range as this has presented a promising start. The kingdom thrived for a few centuries, and formed a springboard for Christianisation of the mainland. It is believed that Jura may have been Hinba, the island to which the 6th-century missionary, Columba, retreated from the monastic community he founded on Iona, when he wished for a more contemplative life. Towards the end of the 15th century, the Lords of the Isles made increasing efforts to establish full independence. John MacDonald, the then Lord, launched a severe raid on Ross, in pursuance of this aim. Within 2 years of the raid, in 1493, the Lordship of the Isles was declared forfeit, and his realm became part of Scotland, rather than a dependency of the Scottish crown. John was exiled from his former lands, and his former subjects now considered themselves to have no superior except the king. A charter was soon sent from the Scottish King confirming this state of affairs; the charter declares that Skye and the Outer Hebrides are to be considered independent from the rest of the former Lordship, leaving only Islay and Jura remaining. Conclusions:

George Orwell’in dünyaca ünlü klasik romanı 1984’ü, Jura adasında inzivaya çekilerek yazmış olması da adayı ilginç kılan bilgiler arasında. Jura 12 (İskoç Single Malt, 40% abv) The bottles are visually-led by a ‘striking’ orange label that features a bespoke, hand-drawn illustration which is intended to signify ‘joy, warmth, health and success.’ Unfortunately, there still seems to be a reluctance to release higher strength versions, which is a shame because the few examples I’ve tried have come across rather well (see my review of the 21-year-old Tide here). Nevertheless, I find myself warming to the brand a little. It feels like Gregg Glass and his team of whisky makers are working hard to give Jura, an island full of character and personality, the product it deserves. In 1838, the old Campbell mansion at Ardfin was remodelled and extended by the architect William Burn for the laird Colin Campbell and renamed Jura House. [30] Search". Geograph Britain and Ireland .
