About this deal

Firstly, I just wanted to say I don’t paint straight from the pot. I prefer to use an old white tile and I always add water to my paints, even when I’m using Lahmian Medium (Glaze Medium). If you do have any questions or suggestions on how to improve it for others, then please do let me know. Anyway, here’s how I paint them with the award winning (awards pending) Completely Ok Dark blue Armour method.:

The Metal Arm: The Deathwatch arms are done with a layer of Leadbelcher shaded with Drakenhof Nightshade to give it a colder steel tone. Then I highlight/edge highlight with Runefang steel and Necron Compound.Coat D'Arms match the OLD citadel colours (pre-1992) so there might be some difference. Shining gold has the most noticeable difference, Whether you’re looking to add a touch of class to your tabletop army or just want to bring your models to life, the Kantor Blue paint is sure to make a lasting statement. What armies to paint with Kantor Blue Runefang Steel, Kantor Blue and Lahmian Medium are mixed together to create a metallic with a blue tinge. This is a thin mix that should go on in 2-3 coats. Paint this on as smooth as possible. If it’s lumpy all the imperfections will show on the shiny armour. Use an airbrush if possible, especially if you’re painting an army to save time. As I already mentioned, a big draw of painting Deathwatch is the opportunity to make each model a character and tell a story.

Macragge Blue– A slightly deeper, more saturated shade of blue that would be a great match for Kantor Blue. Macragge Blue would be great for adding shading and contrast to areas painted with Kantor Blue, helping to give your models a more realistic, nuanced look. Leadbelcher is a highly pigmented metallic paint. You’ll need shake the bottle to properly mix the paint before use. As a base metallic paint, Leadbelcher is my favorite metallic for anything I need to paint steel or iron. This has the best coverage of all the metallic paints, except for perhaps Vallejo’s Model Air metallic line (which you can see the review for here). In general, I use Leadbelcher for nearly every metallic base coat paint job. If I need to brighten this metallic paint, I may mix in a bit of silver metallic paint. Nuln Oil works great as a shade for Leadbelcher. Stormhost Silver The Tyranids – The Tyranids are a race of alien creatures in the Warhammer 40K universe. The Kantor Blue paint can be used to paint their chitinous exoskeletons, giving them an otherworldly and alien appearance. The final model is one I’m very happy with, and that I think very effectively matches up with the 2nd edition codex style. For most miniature pieces I paint yellow, I use Yriel Yellow as my highlight for yellow surfaces. I’ve painted nearly every Imperial Fist space marine piece I own with this paint as the main color. For highlighting Averland Sunset (above), this is the perfect choice. Mix the two paints together for a nice midtone transition. To paint fire effects, you can use this yellow as the transition between the orange and the white parts of the flame. I don’t use any yellows brighter than Yriel Yellow, lest I allow my viewers to think I used a highlighter pen on my miniatures. This is a must-have yellow paint along with Averland Sunset. Mournfang BrownRetributor Armour is the absolute base gold metallic paint (here’s my in-depth review of this amazing gold paint). Gold metallic paint, like yellow paint, have had a bad rap for having poor coverage. They are often hard to use and frequently result in a splotchy finishes. Not Retributor Armour. This gold paint covers any well-primed surface in 1-2 coats, easily, creating a prototypical beautiful gold reflective finish. You can either use it as the primary gold metallic, or shade it with Reikland Flesh or Seraphim Sepia. Use a purple wash, and you turn this gold into a copper metallic (see a more thorough overview of working with metallic paint among others in this article). You can edge highlight this gold with a bit of Stormhost Silver, and give it a bright specular sheen. Technical/Texture Paints Nighthaunt Gloom GW's new range matches with the old range are the matches claimed by GW. However, many of the paints do not match very closely at all and some mixing will be required to get close to the original colours. If you are trying to match old GW with new GW, you'd be better just getting Vallejo game color or coat d'arms for the closest match )

Leather is painted with Scorched Brown, then highlighted with Bleached Bone blended with the base color Freehand in some Lightning Bolts – I do this using Reaper Ghost White. If I’m doing larger bolts, I’ll do a thinner bolt of Reaper Pure White inside that, but for smaller models I just do the one off-white layer. I use a 10/0 brush for this. Put paint on your brush and start at the top, then drift downard using a light touch. Wherever your brush first touches the model is gonna get a drop of paint, so if you add branches I find it’s easier to start higher up and go over the bolt center again. I do all this before I do the trim work, and I’ll paint over the bolts a little as well. Generally, I do bolts on the shoulder pads, the sides of the thighs (if that space is open), and the sides of the greaves. On models with cleaner chest plates, I might add a bolt there as well, or on the tops of lightning claws. Glaze the whole area with Waywatcher Green. For any OSL highlight with Dawnstone and glaze over with Waywatcher Green.Other Details: So here’s the fun part. I tend to match the non-armor details to what the Marine’s parent chapter would have used, colors-wise. That means that Ultramarines get gold aquilas on their chest armor, while say, Blood Angels get white/gray aquilas. Building Character Paint the ropes with Citadel Contrast Flesh-Tearers Red and any Wood or other straps in Citadel Contrast Wyldwood. The scales are one of the defining features of 2nd edition Alpha Legion army. I painted these by freehanding thin “U” shapes on the model’s greaves and shoulder pad with The Fang, then I highlight them a bit at the bottom of the U with Reaper Snow Shadow. Codex: Adeptus Custodes is full of insight into the Emperor’s glorious bananas, highlighting their nature, organization and secret wars, but if you want to read more, here are a few books we’d suggest that dive into greater detail on the Custodes.
