About this deal

Lots of people use safety gates as dog gates for stairs and to keep pets in or out of certain rooms.

Screw-fit stair gates, as the name suggests, require some drilling and screwing to securely attach them to the wall, staircase or door frame. Somewhat frustratingly, the gate doesn’t pop out when you want to give the house a clean. Instead, the whole gate has to be removed from the wall cups using the spanner to loosen the gate adjusters. We suggest keeping the gate in place and vacuuming around it if you can. Is the Easy Fit Plus Deluxe stair gate good value for money? Minimum width: 76cm; maximum width: 82cm (up to 117cm with a combination of Lindam universal extensions, sold separately)

Is the Easy Fit Plus Deluxe stair gate safe?

Within these two categories, there are a few other features that can form part of the identity of a stair gate. For example:

Pressure-mounted or pressure-fit gates require no drilling and rely on pressure to stay in place. When you buy a pressure mounted gate from Munchkin, all the tools and fixings you need are included with your gate. The gates must be fitted between two flat, structurally-sound surfaces. Full visual instructions for installation are provided in the instruction manual included with your gate. Some are made from wood, others are made of painted metal. Some are referred to as being step-free, meaning they don’t have a bar along the bottom of the frame, others have a raised lip. The latter provides a more robust frame, but can present a trip hazard. Retractable stair gates: formed from a flexible material like mesh that rolls or folds up when not in use. Unlike other gates, the handle is designed for single-hand use and isn’t ridiculously stiff, although sometimes our tester found herself using two hands because the squeeze-and-lift motion is a slightly unnatural one. With the many, many essential baby items you’ll be buying – from bottles to car seats – it can be tempting to either put off spending money on a stair gate or consider not getting one at all. Babies and toddlers are explorers at heart, so it’s worth getting a stair gate before they’re even showing signs of crawling or walking. Keep an eye on your little ones wherever you are with our baby monitors. Be it while they're napping in their nursery or playing in their playpen, these monitors provide reassurance of their safety and well-being. Go for a model with a two-way talk function to soothe your baby with your voice and a camera that pans, tilts, and zooms to ensure you don't miss a thing.

Some stair gates also come with a small door inset into the gate, to let a smaller pet through while keeping large people and dogs out. As far as your adventurous toddler goes though, you can rest easy. There are no detachable or insecure pieces, so no choking hazards; all the hinges are covered in rounded plastic fittings, making it impossible to pinch a finger; and the ultra-secure wall mounts mean this gate will stand firm against anything thrown at it – deliberately or accidentally. How easy is the Easy Fit Plus Deluxe stair gate to clean? It’s surprising that the Easy Fit Plus Deluxe is essentially Lindam’s entry-level pressure gate: it’s less expensive than the auto-closing Porte and Orto, and less striking to look at than the Deco – but it performs impressively in every metric tested. It’s recommended that you invest in a high-quality stair gate as soon as your baby starts crawling and/or walking, but when it comes to something as important as your child’s safety, how do you know which is the best stair gate to buy?

Why you should trust us

While there's no statutory requirement to comply, most commercially sold stair gates will have been tested to meet safety standards BS EN1930:2011. The gate’s latch or clip needs to be secure enough to stop a child from opening it. Most connections can be opened one-handed, for when you’re carrying your child, but the safest are those with mechanisms requiring two actions, such as squeezing and lifting.

When it comes to products like this, safety is of course paramount. While we don't test in a lab, we think testing by real families in real homes provides an invaluable true-to-life insight into the quality of a product. You can stop using a stair gate when you’re confident that your child can go up and down the stairs safely on their own (which includes the middle of the night). This will depend on the individual child, but this usually happens at around two or three years of age. If your child doesn’t pull or push on the gate, which could cause it to shift or break, and doesn’t attempt to climb over it, you can keep it in place until you feel comfortable removing it. What are the different types of stair gate? The Easy Fit Plus Deluxe is made from wipe-clean painted metal. The pressure-fitted stair gate isn’t available in any darker colour combinations but we were impressed with how little dirt the white fitting attracted during the testing period. The key purpose of a stair gate is to keep your curious toddler away from anything that might cause them harm, including flights of stairs and busy kitchens. This pressure fit safety gate fits openings of 76 cm to 82 cm. There are no extensions compatible with this safety gate. It is important that you measure the opening of where you want to install your safety gate correctly. Always measure from the narrowest point, typically skirting to skirting.Although the BabyDan Guard Me is safe for use anywhere in your home, the best stair gate for use at the top of the stairs is the Safety 1st Wall Fix Extending Metal Gate, which is also the best screw-fit stair gate we tested. It’s also a good idea to watch out for the uncovered bottom corner of the gate, as the turning circle is slightly wider than average and it’s easy to catch a bare foot. Ideally, you want your stair gate to be at least 75cm (30 inches) in height. Extra-tall models are available, and range in sizes from 1m (39 inches) and beyond. Where to buy a stair gate All of our gates are designed for easy, one-handed opening by adults, in either a squeeze-and-lift or pull-and-lift action. Our pressure-fit gates can be set to open in one or both directions, which can be changed whenever you need. Screw-fit stair gates are mounted onto your walls, screwing into your wall or bannister. The major advantage of this style is that the gate is secure and won’t move around once it’s installed, but the screws will cause minor damage to your walls that will need filling when the gate is removed. Screw-fit gates can be used in a variety of ways: at the top or bottom of a staircase, or in a doorway or other narrow opening. Pressure-fit stair gates
