About this deal

As it is “compatible with” rather than certified MagSafe, it wirelessly charges the iPhone at 7.5W rather than 15W. Apple's MagSafe charger is one of few that charges the iPhone at the fastest speed possible (wirelessly). But if you're tired of it sliding around your bedside table, you can house it in a third-party pad or stand to keep it stable. That makes it harder to use the phone while charging, but if that's no issue, I like these options. Just remember, the wireless charger itself isn't included below; these only work with Apple's official charger.

If your iPhone is connected to both a MagSafe Charger and power via a Lightning port, your iPhone will charge via the Lightning connector. If you use your laptop as your principal computer, you would do well to consider attaching at least one larger display to create a hybrid desktop/laptop setup (with a keyboard, mouse and printer all available via a single connection to your MacBook). You can turn that 13in laptop’s screen real-estate into an iMac-sized 27in or even larger monitor by adding an extra display—or connect two large screens to extend your screen across your whole desk. Take a look at our recommended best monitors and displays for Mac. A 3-in-1 charger that can re-power iPhone, AirPods and Watch is a boon for Apple fans, but most of the products we’ve tested take up quite a lot of desk space. The stylish HiRise 3 Deluxe, as its name suggests, goes more vertical and so has a smaller footprint—handy for bedside tables and other places where a giant charging stand is less welcome. I love this treelike wireless charger. It saves so much space on my desk, and I can recharge the iPhone at the fastest 15-watt charging speed possible, along with an Apple Watch and AirPods. It's a must-have for anyone who has all three of those devices (or any earbuds with wireless charging support). Belkin also has a pad version that adds MagSafe support for AirPods, but it takes up more room, and I much prefer the floating aesthetic. It's like magic! The Apple Watch extension can be disconnected from the main station and charged via a USB-C port to become a standalone wireless charger when travelling. Several brands sell MagSafe wireless chargers nearly identical to Apple's. Here are the models we've tested and like. Note: Most don't include a power adapter, so you'll want one that's at least 20 watts (like this one).

The MagSafe Charger is designed to negotiate the max power up to 9 volt (V) and 3 amp (A) with a USB PD-compatible power adapter. MagSafe will dynamically optimize power delivered to the iPhone. The power delivered toyour iPhoneat any moment will vary depending on various factors, including temperature and system activity. The pad format is better for travel portability than a charging stand, and it comes with its own wall power supply unit, so you don’t need to add your own USB-C charger. The charging panel connects to the mat with a light magnetic snap, and can be positioned on either side simply by flipping the mat round 180 degrees, depending on whether you are left or right handed.

Compatible power adapters for up to 15W faster wireless charging

Not being very useful sums the issue with MagSafe up quite well. MagSafe can work when used thoughtfully, there are some interesting accessories available, and yes, I use it every day, but this usefulness is never directly because of MagSafe. If MagSafe wasn’t there, I wouldn’t miss it because the transformative use— should one be possible — of the technology hasn’t arrived yet. What I do with MagSafe could still happen if MagSafe wasn’t part of the equation. Don’t rule out mere MagSafe-compatible chargers as they are often high quality and nearly always noticeably cheaper. “MagSafe compatible” is used widely to mean any accessory that includes a bunch of magnets.

With one DisplayPort 1.4 and two HDMI 2.0 ports, you can connect up to two 4K displays in Extended mode at a decent 60Hz refresh rate. The Echo 20 has just one video port. Although that port is the superior HDMI 2.1, you have to add a second external screen via one of the Thunderbolt ports, which will require an adapter. During our testing, a completely depleted iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro took an hour to charge up to 50% using the MagSafe charging, while the same test on a 7.5W Qi pad from Mophie took well over an hour. So while it’s not the most sophisticated charging solution, it is definitely one of the fastest solutions when it comes to iPhones. You can always trust iMore. Our team of Apple experts have years of experience testing all kinds of tech and gadgets, so you can be sure our recommendations and criticisms are accurate and helpful. While the MagSafe charger will technically work with an iPhone 11, many people have reported very low charging speeds, making it a less worthwhile option. 9to5Mac claims the iPhone 11 charging speeds were as slow as 0.96W when using a MagSafe charger, compared to the 15W speed with an iPhone 12. Does MagSafe work with Apple Watch and AirPods? While MagSafe is supported on some of the more recent iPhone models, the accessories are not included in the box. And while Thunderbolt 4 is the latest connection standard, its top-end benefits won’t be noticed by most MacBook owners as TB3 matches TB4 on data-transfer speed.
