Not such clever scheduling on my part for this day (my own fault), so I ended up hot-footing it from the City to get to Lord’s on time. My timing issues were exacerbated by the early start scheduled (17:30) and a late change to the AGM venue, which was supposed to be in the Thomas Lord Suite, as last year, but was switched to the Nursery Pavilion at the last minute. That was the year that I kept a scrap book, which has been given to Vinny [Codrington – former Chief Executive] for Middlesex archives. I managed to arrange my day sensibly for this one, with a game of real tennis scheduled at 16:00 ahead of the AGM which was due to start 18:00/18:30. A big turn out for the AGM with many AGM attendees staying on for the party and some there for the party but not the AGM.

Today's announcement from the ECB draws a line under the matter, and we accept their findings that historically, under previous administration, the club has been poorly financially managed over a number of years," they said. Through my twenties, I could not get to Lord’s very often. Because I was working abroad for much of the time. But when, over Christmas 2004, I saw an advertisement for the Head of Finance role at Middlesex, I didn’t have to think twice. I had a first interview with Vinny Codrington and instantly liked him and was invited for a second interview with Treasurer Geoff Norris and Chilton Taylor (he of the unregistered player, points deduction scandal!). I was aware that I was the second of two candidates being interviewed for the position and, as I sat down, I noticed that Geoff Norris, at the bottom of his notes about the previous candidate had written ‘Too old!!!!’– from that point on I relaxed, knowing I had a pretty good chance. Then I remembered a Seaxe Club evening in the St John’s Wood Church Hall, where we raised some money for the cause by betting on movie clips from old horse and dog races.

When I became an MTWD administrator and took on most of the editorial side, at the start of the 2006 season, I suggested that we widen the base of people to provide editorial material. I suggested Janet as one of the people who could and should contribute that way. Thus Janet became a major contributor of match reports for a few years. Here is the start of three parter on Barmy Kev's unique perspective on the Middlesex roller coaster ride on achieving promtion. In those days I would sometimes comment on a group of people I would describe as “The Allen Stand Gossips”– a devoted collection of Middlesex CCC fans who mostly sat in that stand and nearly always had some gossip to impart about the players and/or the club. I soon learnt who Janet Davis was amongst that loosely-associated group. The panel discussion, with traditional libations before and during the panel, was quite lively, with Richard Scott and Shilpa Patel bringing very different perspectives to the questions. I sat at the AGM with one of my real tennis friends, Barry, together with his son Freddie. At the party, the three of us then got together with another friend/retired client of mine, David and also Barmy Kev joined us at our table.

The final section (or was it sub-section) of the show as a smaller panel discussion with four former Middlesex greats; Mike Brearley, Mike Gatting, Clive Radley and John Embury – the latter being Middlesex’s new President, btw. When I first met Chunky In Argyllat Lords , I encouraged him to write a match report for MTWD . Close to what seems like 100 years later Chunkyhas complied. Hestarts with memories on what watching sport 1923. Then we have an account of Middlesex Somerset game 9th March 1923. Our beloved game has changed so much. We look forward Chunky's next offering 2123. Thank you chunky for sharing. Enjoy. This is my final MTWD offering. My perspective of our promotion. Unsure if going up, we have a chance I end up in Fawlty Towers and the many doubtful moments if going up willactually happen. Part two of Kev's three parter, as a departing gift to MTWD. This capturesa uniquetake on our September roller coaster ride on somehow achieving promotion. Enjoy!

Sadly, Janet became beset with health problems from 2010 onwards, so her visits to Lord’s became a rarity and her reporting ceased. I had in any case retired from all formats of MTWD by that time. Middlesex have been penalised and effectively placed in 'special measures' by the ECB after breaching various financial regulations. The AGM was no more dull than usual, in the main. The contentious issue of the new T20 tournament was handled very well, with Mike O’Farrell signalling what was to come in his opening remarks and Richard Goatley then reading out the statement, getting early applause when the gist of it became clear to the throng.

Middlesex responded with a statement that described them as "extremely disappointed with the outcome of the ECB's investigation and the sanctions which are imposed upon us."

I am told that Janet continued to follow Middlesex avidly despite her ill health, so she must have been thrilled when we won the County Championship in such exciting circumstances in 2016. Goodness knows what Janet’s medical team must have needed to do at the climax of that epic season!
