Your milia removal consultation will be with a doctor who will assess your condition and determine the most appropriate form of treatment. During your consultation they will be able to answer any questions you may have about your milia removal and give you personalised advice. If they decide your skin condition can be treated, they will be able to carry out the procedure in-clinic. All of our clinics are monitored by the Care Quality Commission and the equivalent in Scotland (HIS) and Wales (HIW), for your safety and peace of mind. Three simple steps to start your journey Milia are usually diagnosed by their typical appearance and generally no investigations are needed. However, occasionally, if the diagnosis is uncertain or if milia en plaque are suspected, a skin biopsy might be recommended. The tiny, milky white or yellowish cysts themselves are the main symptom of milia. They are sometimes mistaken for white heads (acne). But milia do not itch or cause any pain or discomfort. How are milia treated? Cryotherapy: Liquid nitrogen is used to freeze the milia and then remove them from the skin. This is an uncommon approach, used only on persistent and larger milia. After this procedure, the new skin will be sensitive and can become irritated, so be sure to ask your dermatologist about how to keep the area clean. Scarring can also occur, and the skin in that area may become lighter or slightly change color, so this option may lead to long-lasting side effects. Given enough time, milia will often go away by themselves, but sometimes more help is needed. These 3 tips will help you get smoother, milia-free skin:

Astarita adds that occasionally milia can grow into clusters, which requires "a gentle laser resurfacing treatment like a low setting Fraxel treatment, Halo by Sciton, or a series of chemical peels [to] push the reset button on your skin." Never use lotions or exfoliators for adults on your baby’s skin. If needed, a mild baby soap can be used. If the milia do not go away after a few months, talk to your pediatrician at their next well-child visit. As milia are not spots, spot treatments (such as benzoyl peroxide) will be ineffective. Squeezing or puncturing milia is not recommended either, as the content of these lumps is not fluid, and the squeezing will actually damage the skin surrounding the milia and make them even more noticeable. THE IMPORTANCE OF GOOD SKIN CAREUsing topical retinoids. Topical retinoids are creams or gels derived from vitamin A. While they are designed to treat acne and other skin issues, there is little evidence that they are effective in treating milia. Milia are made of keratin,” says Farah Moustafa, M.D., dermatologist and director of laser and cosmetics at Tufts Medical Center in Boston. They commonly develop on the cheeks, eyelids and the nose. As your skin naturally exfoliates old cells so that new ones can develop, the cells can get trapped, harden and become cystic — that’s milia. “Think of them as pimples with nowhere to go,” says Joshua Zeichner, M.D., a dermatologist and the director of Cosmetic and Clinical Research in Dermatology at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City. Milia occurring under the eyes can be especially unlikely to resolve spontaneously. To remove these surgically, see a dermatologist or an ophthalmologist who specialises in cosmetic eye surgery (including milia treatment). Stitches are not needed when milia are surgically removed. Neonatal milia: Milia on newborn skin is referred to as neonatal milia. Neonatal milia is common around the nose but can also appear on other parts of the face, scalp, or torso. Milia affects up to 50% of newborn babies and usually disappears on its own during the first few weeks of life. Adopt a simple but regular skincare routine to promote the elimination of dead cells: Cleanse your face every evening and gently in the morning. Once a week, exfoliate to boost the removal of dead skin cells.

Adding a gentle exfoliation to your skin care regime can help renew the skin and keep pores free and clear Patsatsi A, Uy CDC, Murrell DF. Multiple milia formation in blistering diseases. Int J Womens Dermatol. 2020;6(3):199-202. doi:10.1016/j.ijwd.2020.03.045 If you live in a state where estheticians are legally allowed to perform manual extraction, Dr. Lal says a visit to a certified esthetician who can also perform facials and other services is beneficial as well. ElectrocauteryOnce the skin with milia has been cleaned, a sterile needle is used to create a tiny incision and the contents of the milia are carefully extracted. Chemical peels: You can get a chemical peel with a cosmetic professional, or find one in a store and use it on your own. Like soaps and exfoliating products, it is important to be very careful with chemical peels around your eyes, and consider consulting a doctor before proceeding. Prevention is the best approach to managing milia. Be careful with any treatments you pursue, and understand the risks of scarring or damage. Harsh chemicals or risky home treatments can lead to damage to your eyes. Procedures to Remove Milia

If you have recurring milia, or milia that do not go away, you may be concerned more for cosmetic reasons than anything else since milia are not harmful. Aside from prevention efforts, there are some treatments you can try to remove milia. Ghosh S, Sangal S. Congenital milia en plaque on scalp. Indian J Dermatol. 2015;60(1):105. doi:10.4103/0019-5154.147871 For some people, milia can last for a long time if left alone, but in many cases, milia will go away on its own within a matter of weeks. If you want to say goodbye to those bumps sooner rather than later, however, a dermatologist or licensed esthetician can extract milia using a lancet to draw the impacted keratin out from under the skin or break it down with chemicals or lasers.Multiple eruptive milia: This rare condition causes groups of cysts to form over weeks to months on your face, upper arms and upper abdomen. These cysts can be itchy. Don't overload the skin with formulas that are too rich or products that cover too much. Unless your skin type requires it, go for all-in-one, non-greasy formulas. Milia will present itself as a white or yellow bump that appears to be just below the skin surface but are actually deep seeded. The bump can range between 1-2mm in size and sometimes can be mistaken for the condition acne. Varyingly, there can be a cluster of bumps or in some cases only one. Treatments
