I want to talk about something here though. The author talks a lot about choice and how we have the power to choose a different direction or choose our priorities. Grace Paley, Master of Minimalist Writing". A Women's Thing. 21 March 2017 . Retrieved 25 March 2023. Jones, Sophie A. (22 May 2020). "Minimalism's Attention Deficit: Distraction, Description, and Mary Robison's Why Did I Ever". American Literary History. England: Oxford University Press. 32 (2): 301–327. doi: 10.1093/alh/ajaa004. PMC 7446296. PMID 32863576 . Retrieved 25 March 2023. In film, minimalism usually is associated with filmmakers such as Robert Bresson, Chantal Akerman, Carl Theodor Dreyer, and Yasujirō Ozu. Their films typically tell a simple story with straightforward camera usage and minimal use of score. Paul Schrader named their kind of cinema: "transcendental cinema". [85] In the present, a commitment to minimalist filmmaking can be seen in film movements such as Dogme 95, mumblecore, and the Romanian New Wave. Abbas Kiarostami, [86] Elia Suleiman, [87] and Kelly Reichardt are also considered minimalist filmmakers.

To portray global warming to non-scientists, in 2018 British climate scientist Ed Hawkins developed warming stripes graphics that are deliberately devoid of scientific or technical indicia, for ease of understanding by non-scientists. [93] Hawkins explained that "our visual system will do the interpretation of the stripes without us even thinking about it". [94] It reads more like a collection of thoughts from a good friend than an advice manual, but it will make readers think hard about their own lives and what they give time and attention to. Niequist advocates for readers to focus on one thing at a time and teaches about genuine rest and simplicity in the process. 4. The Afrominimalist's Guide to Living with Less by Christine Platt

She was always trying to reinvent herself and find a way of living in the world. In New York, she kind of becomes the den mother of this community of artists at Coenties Slip. But she also isolates herself, because she has these issues with schizophrenia and other mental health problems. Sometimes she ends up catatonic in her loft for days on end. Eventually she finds some success in New York, and starts to show in galleries there, but decides that New York is just too much for her. She can’t live here. She can’t succeed in doing her work, so she just totally bails. Praise for this book and its author is nearly endless, as Kondo brings a fresh and time-saving perspective on cleaning to the world. 2. Minimalism: Live a Meaningful Life by Ryan Nicodemus and Joshua Fields Millburn With the unwanted stuff removed from their lives, many minimalists are free from caring for, thinking about, or getting frustrated with their stuff. Paul Schrader on Revisiting Transcendental Style in Film. 2017 Toronto International Film Festival– via YouTube. Judd always thought it was a mistake that he was labelled a Minimalist, and thought that Minimalism as a movement did not exist, and was just an invention of critics. There was no movement, in his mind. And he was kind of right, actually, because there was no coherent, Minimalist idea. The artists were not necessarily colluding. They were not identifying with each other.

Wiegand, David (19 December 2009). "Serendipitous stay led writer to Raymond Carver". San Francisco Chronicle. Archived from the original on 31 March 2022 . Retrieved 31 March 2022. You can apply the things the author says to work, life, family, relationships and goals you might have.

If they can’t work to fix or change outside circumstances then they can certainly work on themselves. Jeon, Hannah (17 June 2020). "A Minimalist Home Can Reduce Stress and Improve Your Well-Being, Experts Say". Good Housekeeping . Retrieved 4 July 2022.

In her work, and in her writing, she’s moving toward this this ineffable plan. She’s grasping toward the universal spirituality that she knows exists, but that she cannot find except in a few moments. I think minimalism is always drawing toward that impossible goal. The perfect match between form and content, or ends in means. But it’s never quite getting there. The Japanese aesthetic of wabi-sabi values the quality of simple and plain objects. [36] It appreciates the absence of unnecessary features, treasures a life in quietness and aims to reveal the innate character of materials. [37] For example, the Japanese floral art of ikebana has the central principle of letting the flower express itself. People cut off the branches, leaves and blossoms from the plants and only retain the essential part of the plant. This conveys the idea of essential quality and innate character in nature. Joshua has a style of writing that’s, how do I put it, inaccessible? While I understand his joy of writing, his choice of words can make it appear as though he’s being quite self-indulgent at the expense of the reader. Some have yet complained the book is too subjective and thus useless in helping the reader become a true minimalist. Another downside many have also pointed out is that the ideas in this book are repetitive and bring nothing new to minimalists who have done their research and read other books. The Minimalists – Joshua Fields Millburn, Ryan Nicodemus, and Matt D'Avella – directed and produced the film Minimalism: A Documentary, [88] which showcased the idea of minimal living in the modern world. He walks you through the changes he made in his life with a few photographs to give you a visual idea. We live in an age of mass consumerism. The jobs we work endless hours at help us earn more so we can spend more. But there comes a time when we wonder what lies beyond this seemingly senseless cycle of earning and spending.

There’s a connection between minimalism and optimisation. You’ve refined what you’re carrying, or what’s around you to only the best and most ideal and perfect objects, right? She has this really great connection between minimalism and spirituality, because she was always searching for the ineffable. She connected her paintings to the Zen idea of a universal spirit, and she titled quite a few of the early works after plants or natural phenomena like the ocean. So you see her seeking out the sense of peace that she knows exists, but that she can never quite reach. And in Martin’s Writings you can you can see as she grasps for this thing that does not exist. The words really strain toward this spiritual plane of existence, and that is a rare quality in any artist’s writing. I find that really compelling. It’s a book that focuses on making you understand what minimalism is, what its benefits are, and how you become a minimalist. All in a way that ensures you see the importance of the movement in your life. For all these reasons, we strongly recommend you give this book a go. These books will help you learn how to start living on less and embrace a minimalist lifestyle! 1. The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing by Marie Kondo Dissatisfaction with materialism and the usual rewards of society is not new, but minimalism is not an idea with a straightforward chronological history. It is more like a feeling that repeats in different times and places around the world. It is defined by the sense that the surrounding civilisation is excessive, and has thus lost some kind of original authenticity, which must be regained. The material world holds less meaning in these moments, and so accumulating more stuff loses its appeal. There’s nothing new here. It’s all regurgitated content from their previous books – sometimes word-for-word. Or tidbits from their podcast episodes.
