About this deal

Octavia Brennan is a beautiful yet flawed young woman, living the high life in 1970s London. Though she is deeply flirtatious and has – by her own admission – slept with many men, she has never found happiness with any of them. Rivals is part of Jilly Cooper’s racy 10-book 'Rutshire Chronicles’ series which follows members of England’s power-grabbing social elite as they fall in and out of bed with each other and fight tooth and nail to get ahead. The heroine, Abigail Rosen aka Appassionata, was not only the most violinist and flamboyant in classical music but was also the sexiest. Unfortunately, she was also the loneliest. She was also very attracted to a sinfully glamorous horn player, Viking O’Neill. Spoiler alert!*** One of the prevailing themes of the books is Rupert's love for Taggie, and his faithfulness to her. In this book he cheats on her, and it seems so random. There is no believable reason, the person he sleeps with isn't likeable, there is no built up basis that makes the events understandable. It's like Jilly just threw it in there for excitement. ***Spoiler Alert over***

In this book, there is more romance, betrayal, parties, adultery and sex. It also squeezes in some of the women rights at the workplace which was headed by Cameron Cook. On 13 November 2009 she was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Letters by the University of Gloucestershire at a ceremony in Gloucester Cathedral. Yet, in the end, they are dispensable; they can be bitten to death by other horses (Love Rat in Mount!) without disrupting the fundamentally romantic atmosphere. So, they are almost like a dialectical echo, the melodrama against the drama, the depth against the lightness.

It isn’t as breathlessly compelling as Rivals – but then, almost nothing is – and there’s less sex than usual, although that word will definitely shake you up a bit. But the fact that there isn’t much of a plot doesn’t really matter, because that’s not what Jilly is about.

Rupert is consumed by one obsession: that Love Rat, his adored grey horse, be proclaimed champion stallion. He longs to trounce Roberto’s Revenge, the stallion owned by his detested rival Cosmo Rannaldini, which means abandoning his racing empire at Penscombe and his darling wife Taggie, and chasing winners in the richest races worldwide, from Dubai to Los Angeles to Melbourne. For regular readers of Cooper's novels I am sure that many characters played major roles in previous books in the series. Fortunately, Ferdie, his fat friend gave him a solution – getting paid for making husbands jealous. He causes havoc in Rutshire for quite some time but the real trouble starts when he comes face to face with Rannaldini. Barber, Michael (3 December 2013). If, like me, you have never read Cooper before I am sure you will finish this one wanting more - I certainly did!An ambitious and stunningly attractive headmaster, Hengsit Brett-Taylor, comes up with a plan to share his school’s facilities with Larkminster Comprehensive aka ‘Larks’. His intentions were purely financial but they changed once he met Janna Curtis, the new head of Larks. Janna’s objective is to save the school from closure. In addition, she is pretty, young, brave and enthusiastic. She is determined to do anything to save her school from closure. a b Laing, Olivia (12 September 2010). "Jump! by Jilly Cooper". It’s 38 years since Rupert appeared in Riders. He is now 67, which means we met him when he was 29, although he came off more like 35. Never mind; age cannot wither him, being the handsomest man in the world. Of course, everyone biologically related to him, children and grandchildren, is outstandingly beautiful, as is his wider circle and household. It would besmirch his supremacy were he to stand next to anyone not handsome.
