'U' BOP SHEARING OPTIONS For pill and slug treatments, normal concentrations of M-I SEALmaterial range from 15 to 30 lbm/bbl [43 to 86 kg/m3]; concentrations >30 lbm/bbl [86 kg/m3] normally are not more effective. Batch treatments are often preferred to treating the entire system in an effort to minimize shaker losses and avoid bypassing shaker screens, thereby reducing mud contamination from drill solids.

Several years ago we built a research house to determine what new products and techniques we could implement on a production basis. We used the Triple Guard sill seal and it worked well, although it was quite expensive. Subsequenly we found that it became difficult to use during cold weather construction and did not adhere well to the concrete. The area of the foundation that accepts the vertical leg needs to be clean, dry, and in cold weather you need to apply a primer to the concrete, also sold by the manufacturer, to better assure a good bond, increasing the linear foot cost of this detail. The slope of the linear portion of the curve, S, gives valuable information concerning the quality of the filter cake. When S=0, an impermeable filter cake is formed. A large value of S indicates that a poor quality filter cake is formed. The permeability of the cake is related to the slope by the following equation: Variable rams became available by 1979. Also, these rams extend the versatility of the ram-type preventer by sealing on pipes of various sizes. This flexibility could eliminate the need for changing rams when running a tapered drill string or when testing with tubing. Variable rams use steel fingers that move inward to seal around pipe smaller than the ram body.
