About this deal

I have been utilizing some positive discipline skills in the past year that I learned at Mountain Mahogany Community School, and they work like a charm. I was dubious, at first, because my previous methods worked as well, but I do find that with positive discipline...I'm less tired at the end of the day, and I'm less-stressed, in general. Anyone who is interested in positive discipline for their child, should read this book. (Chapters 4-6) urn:lcp:mypossedontdohom00john:epub:17bff420-6ef1-4cbd-8403-71c272dd810e Foldoutcount 0 Identifier mypossedontdohom00john Identifier-ark ark:/13960/t6f207d1x Isbn 9780312951634 Soon it dawns upon her that the key to their hearts and to their minds is poetry. She starts them out with something they can relate to—"Mr. Tambourine Man" by Bob Dylan, though presumably the kids would have responded as readily to the more familiar street poetry of rap. She then neatly segues into the works of Dylan Thomas. The screenplay by Ronald Bass, the Oscar-winning author of "Rain Man," called for a series of scenes involving Johnson and her boyfriend, all of which were shot and then cut from the movie. She does have a sounding board in George Dzundza, stalwart as her old friend and colleague. But Pfieffer is absurdly miscast: Sly Stallone would make a more plausible Mr. Chips than the frail, squeaky actress does a nine-year veteran of the Marine Corps. Inner City School: Parkmont High School. While the high school itself might be well off, the bussed in kids are typical of the trope. The TV show is more typical of the trope than the movie.

First of all Louanne Johnson did an amazing job of writing this and how she explains all of her stories is so good. This is my first book I have read of hers and I think she is an amazing writer. She makes it such a good book about a first year teacher with the other years following. The way she gets the kids in the story so connected to the reader is so amazing. It felt like I actually knew the high schoolers in this book. It is also like me having miss Johnson has a real teacher. Additional photography was also done in Pacoima, Monrovia, Glendale, and Sherman Oaks. p. 97 Grab students by the brain--subtitle section, very disappointingly small section with that title! Historical Villain Upgrade: The movie made Johnson's students out to be worse than they were in real life.

I just finished this book for my EDUC204 class I'm taking this summer for my license in teaching K-12, called "Effective Teaching." This is the most enjoyable teaching book I've read in all of the classes I've taken so far, and, frankly, I would recommend it to all of my friends who are teachers or are parents of soon-to-be or school children because it has so much helpful information about health and education, reading techniques and problem-solving for reading problems, and creative discipline. Yeah for LouAnne Johnson (famous, by the way, for her other book DANGEROUS MINDS...made famous by the movie starring Michelle Pfeiffer). That's not racism. That's someone being cautious because you are acting weird and suspicious toward them. They are perfectly within their rights, not to mention normal common sense, to be wary of you. No normal person just goes up to a random stranger and asks them for their hoodie or whatever. Maybe they were in a rough neighborhood. Maybe they wanted to avoid trouble. Maybe you were dressed like a thug. Get over it. It doesn't matter how "nice" you may have been about it, your clear intention was still to get something out of them. That does not make you the victim, it makes you a bully. Stop taking advantage of other people and then crying racism. That shit gets real old, real fast.

Heartbroken by her failure to protect Emilio and angry at the indifferent school system for contributing to his death, LouAnne announces to the class her intention to leave the school at the end of the academic year. The students immediately break down, begging her not to leave. Overwhelmed by their unbridled display of emotion, she decides to stay. A few particular students attract LouAnne's interest for their personal problems. Raul Sanchero is a boy who is frequently involved in gang warfare and street crime. LouAnne tries to encourage him to focus by paying a special visit to his family to congratulate him on his work and going to dinner with him as a way of instilling confidence and self-respect. What, exactly, will these disadvantaged inner-city kids accomplish by being bribedwith candy bars and the "relevancy" of Bob Dylan? Can they read andwrite? Can they compete in the job market? An educational system that hasbrought them to the point we observe in the first classroom scene has alreadyfailed them so miserably that all of Miss Johnson's karate lessons are notgoing to be much help. Finally, there are reflective questions at the end of each chapter to help the reader retain the information he or she read and to strengthen their teaching skills. She was the first woman inducted into the DINFOS (Defense Information School) Hall of Fame. This book is a perfect example of what's wrong with the American education system. If you don't understand what kids are going through culturally and at home then you can actually help them. She didn't teacher her students, she admits that students got A's in her class but D's & F's in every other class. A few students saw improvement overall but she admits that they had stable home lives. She was an English teacher who didn't grade based on spelling, grammar or the length of the essay.
