About this deal

Finally, off the left side of the 24-70mm F2.8's base is a focus mode switch. The lens is fully sealed against dust and moisture, with seals not only at the base, but also at its control rings, buttons and focus mode switch, as well as at joints between components. There's no optical image stabilization on this lens, but most Z-mount cameras offer in-body image stabilization anyway, and we've found it to be quite effective. Slightly stripped down and more stills-focused, the Z5 shares the same 273-point hybrid AF system, Expeed 6 processor and 3.69M-dot OLED viewfinder as the Z6. But niceties like a top plate display are absent. Likewise, the Z5's max burst rate and video capabilities are considerably less than that of the Z6: 4.5 fps vs. 12 fps and heavily cropped 4K vs. un-cropped, oversampled 4K. But from an image quality and handling standpoint, the two cameras are quite similar. Key Specifications: As for other DSLR and mirrorless rivals, there are simply too many to compare to them all. (We have no less than 16 full-frame 24-70mm F2.8 lenses for mirrorless or DSLR cameras in our lens database.) There are two in particular we think it's worth comparing, though: The first-party equivalents on the Z-mount's strongest competitors, the Canon RF and Sony E-mounts.

Pressing the Display button next to the OLED panel cycles through aperture, focal length and focus displays. The latter also includes a handy depth-of-field scale.

We had no issues whatsoever with lens flare. This lens handles bright light sources very, very well, and ghosting is pretty well controlled too. x 2.160p (30fps), 3.840 x 2.160p (25fps), 3.840 x 2.160p (24fps), 1.920 x 1.080p (60fps), 1.920 x 1.080p (50fps), 1.920 x 1.080p (30fps), 1.920 x 1.080p (25fps), 1.920 x 1.080p (24fps) The possibility to shot 4K full frame is important, ultra wide angle lenses are very often used in video. The Z5 will have 1.7x more FL than the equivalent lens on the A7R II.

Bridgeport Inn at Night, October 2018, 7:59 P.M. Nikon Z7, Nikon 24-70mm f/4 Z at 24mm, f/4 at 1/25 hand-held at Auto ISO 1,250, Snapseed and Perfectly Clear v3.6. bigger. Focus shift: Some clear-but-small focus shift, to the point where for pinpoint accurate work, this probably isn't the lens for you. At 24mm it seems pretty stable with results beyond f/5.6, but at 70mm there's clear variability from f/4 all the way out through f/16, making it a little unpredictable about where the focus plane really is ( hint: focus a bit towards infinity: at f/11 the shift is about the same as a +5 AF Fine Tune). Given that the Z cameras to date will only be using f/4 or f/5.6 for focus, you could see focus shift in some results if you’re not careful. At 17.7 ounces (500g) and 3.5" (88.5mm) in length, the 24-70mm f4 S is one of the smaller 24-70mm mid-range zooms you can find. It's close to the size and weight of the 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G lens, which is the smallest F-mount Nikon option to date (note that the F-mount 24-85mm on the FTZ adapter would be bigger and heavier than the 24-70mm S). The Z5 is the same exact size, weight and shape as the Z6. But there are a few small differences between the two bodies.

Nikon Z7, Nikon 24-70mm f/4 Z at 24mm, f/8 hand-held at 1/4 at Auto ISO 64, Perfectly Clear v3.6. bigger. Autofocus is as fast as every other modern lens, and its stepper autofocus motor is silent from more than a few inches away. If it's quiet and you listen very carefully you can hear a very slight whine as it works.

Vignetting is something you might expect to be lower with a wider mount, but that’s not necessarily the case. Both mirrorless models have higher levels of corner shading than the Canon EF lens; and although the Sony zoom has higher vignetting on average, the Nikkor reaches well over –2EV at 70mm when set to the initial aperture, and the vignetting never really disappears even when stopped down. At its lowest, it measures around –0.5 EV, and that’s not just visible in the corners but at the widest edges as well. Fortunately, this can be easily removed in-camera or after capture via software, but if it’s particularly heavy, it can reveal noise that can lead to a loss of detail after removal. Autofocus performance from the Z5 is quite good, whether shooting moving or static subjects. But video performance is not the camera's strong suit. In the Press

Autofocus: when it comes to focusing, the Z5 is just as good as the Z6. Its autofocus also relies on a total of 273 focus points and also allows visual detection of humans and animals. Therefore, the focus speed should also be the same. However, that focal length range really isn’t very big at all, stretching barely over 2x. While the 24mm wide length is pretty much what you’d expect, topping out at 50mm quite literally comes up short when it comes to telephoto reach (the Z50’s Z 16-50mm has a 3.1x zoom range by way of comparison, with a 24-75mm effective focal length). New is that the control ring is programmable. It defaults to Manual Focus, or make it control aperture or exposure compensation if you prefer. Weird Wood, October 2018, 3:21 P.M. Nikon Z7, Nikon 24-70mm f/4 Z at 41mm, f/8 hand-held at 1/30 at Auto ISO 64, Perfectly Clear v3.6. bigger or full-resolution. Overall, I judge the sharpness to be quite good for a kit lens and its price. This small, light lens is performing in a category well above expectation. It’s just not perfect. There’s little astigmatism and coma in the corners, though, which means that corners do tend to sharpen up well, particularly with deconvolution sharpeners.

Can also be set to approx. 0.3, 0.5, 0.7 or 1 EV (ISO 50 equivalent) below ISO 100 or to approx. 0.3, 0.5, 0.7, 1 EV (ISO 102,400 equivalent) above ISO 51,200; auto ISO sensitivity control available Have a look below to see the magnitude of uncorrected lateral CA at 24mm, F5.6 on a high resolution Z7 camera body, then hover over 'Distortion + Lateral CA correction profiles applied' to view the results after correction. There's minimal negative impact from the CA correction, but the distortion correction does introduce some softness into the image (pay particular attention to the tree branches). There is only slight breathing in this 24-70mm. At 70mm the image gets slightly smaller as focused more closely. This camera comes as the prefect option for those who want to take the next step with their photography without throwing themselves towards a Pro-Mirrorless or DSLR camera body. The Nikon Z5 is equipped with a sizeable 24.3MP Full-Frame CMOS FX imaging sensor. This beautiful sensor allows you to capture stunning images and even records 4K video footage. Not only this but the sensor is also housed in a lightweight, weather sealed and compact body, perfect for getting out there and being ready to freeze the action in front of you.
