Description

In "No, We Can't Be Friends" we follow Sloane who is happily married to her husband Myles. They start trying to have a family, but so far Sloane has not become pregnant. Sloane and Myles are also dealing with a huge house renovation. Sloane is starting to feel something is off with Myles. She starts to wonder if he's having an affair and thinks it could be with one of her frenemies, Bianca. I know what you are thinking - 2.5 stars?! Whats wrong with it? Well for stars the blurb is completely misleading! This was not Laugh Out Loud in any way. I didn’t laugh once. Either that or I read it wrong as it did not go the way I expected it! Sophie Ranald's writing is conversational and relatable - like a perceptive friend with the gift of the gab. It's fast-paced, straight up and engaging. There's humour, but more sharp, snappy quips than belly laughs. Be open-minded. Some people you meet might be different from you, but that doesn't mean they're not exciting people. Learn more about what makes them who they are rather than judging them. The book did make me think though. Without getting into it very much, Ranald shows a great case of gaslighting and I wish had spelled things out in those terms so that Sloane could have had a conversation with herself about that.

Had me laughing out loud! What a refreshing read… Excellent... If you need a feel-good, funny, witty read, this should be it!’ A Book with Review, ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Everything else in the story was pretty much just fillers to help add to it. Nothing really moved me or made me love any other characters. I did like her business partner though. She was pretty funny. And the romance towards the end was kind of lame to be honest. I liked that she took time for herself and I appreciate the ending, but it was rushed and that relationship never really got developed. This one had me laughing out loud!… If you need a feel-good, funny, witty read, this should be it!’ A Book with Review, ⭐⭐⭐⭐ I just adored this book!... A very relatable story as any of us who have gone through a long-term relationship breakup or a divorce will vouch for, but also very uplifting and heart-warming.’ Reading Tonic, ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Made me scream with laughter… There are no words to adequately describe how much I adored this book… I read the entire story in one sitting.’ The Bespectacled Bibliophile,⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

I probably shouldn't admit this but I found myself sneaking onto my phone at work to keep on reading this.’ Lace and Dagger Books, ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Sloane was so relatable. We have all been in her shoes. No woman could deny that she was Sloane at least once in her life. Besides being relatable, though, Sloane was extremely likable. I adored her from the beginning and throughout the book, my admiration for her grew. Had me laughing out loud! What a refreshing read… Excellent... If you need a feel-good, funny, witty read, this should be it! ’ A Book with Review, ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Sophie Ranald wrote a very relatable story as any of us who have gone through a long-term relationship breakup or a divorce will vouch for, but also very uplifting and heart-warming. At the end of the day it is people in our lives (friends, family, co-workers, kind strangers) that matter, not houses or fancy decor. And we can make our own if not HEA, at least HFN, if we take our ife decisions in our own hands. Turn acquaintances into friends. You can turn acquaintances into friends by simply talking to them from time to time, finding out more about their interests, and sharing your thoughts with them.

Myles is definitely not my favorite character. He is pushy, secretive, and likes to put the blame on others for his actions. Join a social media group. If you're not the type of person who likes joining clubs or meeting people in person, there are always Facebook groups. Social media is a good way to get in touch with new people and make lasting connections. If you are too shy to talk to people in person, then finding them online first is an excellent way to start. All of this to say that it taught me something, this experience. I don't see myself as something who hardly judges and yet that was exactly what I did here, only because I felt somehow displeased and didn't even left out space to consider other ways to look at things. The things I didn't enjoy as much are very specific to certain sections of the novel. There's this one part where the author uses dialogue to tell what happened on the recent past in what felt like was a very performative- robotic way. Bear in mind that is totally my own perception of this one scene. You're shy. For some, it isn't easy to start conversations with people they don't know. So you avoid social situations and stay in rather than go out to meet new people.Really loved this book... Devoured it in one sitting. Totally recommended.’ Goodreads Reviewer, ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

This one had me laughing out loud! What a refreshing read... If you need a feel-good, funny, witty read, this should be it!' A Book with Review, This one had me laughing out loud! What a refreshing read… If you need a feel-good, funny, witty read, this should be it! ’ A Book with Review, ⭐⭐⭐⭐ She’d found The One at last and she could finally delete Tinder, forgetting all those waste-of-space men she’d never have to date again.

Sloane is thriving in her PR job and in a marriage that seems fine from the outside. She and her husband are renovating their dream house and trying for a baby. Then she slowly comes to suspect that her husband isn't who she thought and their relationship isn't what she wants. Slowly she gains the confidence to see him for who he is and figure out how to take control of her life. There are things I liked, like the underlining commentary on gaslighting and how such narrative can really help people in similar situations. I liked how we got glimpses into other characters' lives even though it wasn't super clear where the author was trying to go with those at times. I enjoyed the writing and how easy is to hear Sloane's voice and to feel for her. One of the major highlights from this narrative, for me, was the ability the the author had to makes us feel a little bit how Sloane felt in her moments of greatest distress: fear, confusion, sadness, anger. Attend a club or organization meeting. Sometimes they will have an open house for potential members. Try attending the meetings and see if there is anything that interests you. Work on your shyness or social anxiety. If you live with shyness or social anxiety, there are ways to overcome these issues. You'll find out new things about yourself and even meet people who have the same struggles as you.

Okay first things first. This book is so good. Like so so good. And so so realistic. Husbands like Myles, unfortunately, exists and so do wives like Sloane. What happened to Sloane in this book happens a lot to every other woman every other day. I really felt anger and then some more anger on behalf of her. But I have to hand it to Sophie Ranald. The author book on a serious subject, covered it up in pretty colors with a plot so deep and realistic that it punches you in the gut with the struggle that comes with the idea of an ideal marriage life or simply the life of modern women these days. Hats off to her. Simply brilliant and absolutely unputdownable. I read it in one go and the next thing I know its come to an end. I literally devoured it in one go and thats the thing that never happened to me before. Don't be fooled by the bright cover, this is realistic fiction at its best! I have to hand it to Sophie Ranald... Hats off to her. Honestly I can't praise this book enough. ' Goodreads Reviewer, ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Made me scream with laughter… There are no words to adequately describe how much I adored this book… I read the entire story in one sitting.’ The Bespectacled Bibliophile, ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

I really enjoyed Sloane's journey. When we meet her she is somewhat hesitant in her decisions. Through some conversations of hers, I can tell that she was someone who trusted her gut and followed it. Myles and his secret are making her question everything. Are her assumptions justified? Is Myles still lying? Readers totally love No, We Can't Be Friends:' Made me scream with laughter...
