In the opening of the book, the dangerous prince and heir to the Salar of Rasharwi, who has just been victorious in battle over some of his enemies, intervenes before a Bharavi woman can be ravished by one of his generals. The prince demands the woman, named Zahara, a proud tribal member of the fierce and nomadic Kha’gans, reveal the well-guarded secret location of Citara, a coveted stronghold, and threatens that he will give her over to all of his soldiers to be brutally raped and killed if she does not comply. But the woman refuses. The prince is impressed by the woman’s bravery and intellect, and decides to make her one of his wives, against the woman’s will. She vows revenge – she will do what she has to do, but one day vows to see the Prince, who later becomes the Salar, dead.

Vivid, Middle-Eastern inspired worldbuilding, full of sand-blasted deserts, elegant cities, and feuding Kha’gans, I loved the customs, cultures, landscapes of the book. If I have a quibble here, it would be that a character list and maps would have been helpful to keep things sorted. The depth and intensity of the emotional dynamics between the characters and their introspection is breathtaking. As is the brilliant prose, the complexities of the plot, the richness of the cultures and setting, and the power of the themes and messages. Once you have obtained a second Source point, you get a new journal entry instructing you to return to Siva. You can gain a new source point by completing Shadow over Driftwood. They are not morally grey, they are just painfully and realistically human. And we all know that humans are often not logical and that they sometimes let their complex and messy emotions get the better of them, which is exactly what makes their journeys so unpredictable and compelling to follow. I was born sensitive yet stubborn—a problematic combination that draws in bullies because I’m easily hurt, and when you refuse to bend to the world, what begins as an easy target becomes the target. Going against trends to stand your ground makes you a heretic, and people anywhere will burn heretics when they see one, whatever that word means to them at that point in time.Herobrine is a fast and strong boss capable of teleportation. He is difficult to defeat alone without high-tier gear and consumables. His behavior can be divided into two stages: Observation and Combat. Herobrine becomes more challenging every time you win a battle against him, gaining better equipment and new abilities. Obsidian with Hematite: This is the Lava Glass variety with rust-colored bands often used by shamans and healers for auric shielding. Use it for immunity and recovery. But perhaps the theme that gripped me the most was that of leadership. What leaders must do not only to maintain power, but to protect, shelter, clothe and feed, and inspire their people. How leaders must push their people to the edge of what they believe are their limitations, and then push some more, if need be, for the greater good. We learned that a certain Saheila could teach me on how to train my Source - but it seems that she was deported to Fort Joy... From Higba, we learned of a Sourcerer called Hannag, who might be able to teach us how to master our Source powers. The last that he heard, she was hiding somewhere in Paradise Downs. I’ve survived a world I don’t belong by writing for decades. I’ve survived worse things than being a woman writing fantasy in a foreign language. I will probably never fit in anywhere and the world will never accommodate people like me. It doesn’t matter. I didn’t start writing to be validated by the majority. I never have. Obsidian with Tridymite: When Obsidian forms with Tridymite, it shows white, orange, brown, and cream hues. This variety is common to New Zealand and excellent for higher powers, like intuition and spirit communication. The opening chapter of this book honestly could not have been stronger in my opinion. It wastes no time on slow or pretty introductions, but instead just drops you straight into the chaos and trauma. It’s visceral and unflinching in its brutality, and that beautifully sets the tone for the rest of the story. From the moment this book first came onto my radar, I just had a feeling that I would love it. Described as being emotionally impactful, unapologetically dark, and painfully human, this book had all the trappings to become a new favourite of mine. And even with me hyping it up so much in my head, it still managed to completely blow all my expectations out of the water. Obsidian: Awakening is the slow-burn, character-driven, grimdark political fantasy of your dreams.
