About this deal

There's a minor accident as a result and Ivy's face gets a little banged up. More concerning to Ivy however is the figure that caused them to go off the road in the first place. What was that? i’d like to thank netgalley, flatiron books, and melissa albert for an arc of this book in exchange for an honest review! this book follows ivy and her mother dana as ivy begins to learn more about her mother’s past. albert truly wrote the perfect witchy book full of twists and turns that kept me intrigued the entire time. it's haunting, sinister, and gruesome - i absolutely loved it. At this point all of the girls are teens. They have the run of the city, mostly unsupervised and able to do as they pleased.

A riveting story that grips you like a spell until you’re too deep to emerge unscathed." — Angeline Boulley, author of Firekeeper’s Daughter EVERY LINE READS LIKE AN INCANTATION, and the result is a book pulsing with magic, one that holds the reader firmly under its spell. V.E. Schwab, author of The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue Every line reads like an incantation, and the result is a book pulsing with magic, one that holds the reader firmly under its spell." - V.E. Schwab, author of The Invisible Life of Addie LaRueBilly stared at me. Then he stood, shaking his head. “Won’t happen again,” he said, and disappeared into his house. Though her previous efforts have been more explicitly fantasy focused—Albert’s The Hazel Wood duology is a delicately layered dark fairytale in which characters from a storybook realm known as the Hinterland are not only alive but capable of crossing into our real world— Our Crooked Hearts is a more contemporary sort of tale, told across two interconnected timelines that are bound by both love and the supernatural. (As well as no small amount of female rage.) My eye went to the darkened second-story windows. One of them lit up a minute later and I looked away, regret and bottom-shelf vodka muddling queasily in my stomach. Time to get in bed, I figured. Before my night found one more way to go to shit.

Our Crooked Hearts is a bit of a mind f-(you can guess the rest of that word). Ivy is a teenage girl with a strange mother, who at times is a bit scary. She is strange and does and says weird things that normal people just don't. When a girl ends up running out of the woods naked in front of the car Ivy is in, she is set on a journey to learn the secrets of her mother's past and why that very naked girl from the woods knew her name.

This is a novel that will be devoured as well as savored. It takes risks and, magically, succeeds." — Booklist (starred review) that is not at all where it ended—while many books would be happy to ride that thematic old pony all the way through, here it's only half of the story, and at the crooked heart at the center of this one is the story of a mother and a daughter and the secrets that separate them. The moody, dark atmosphere was definitely a plus for me. I loved how full of magic it was. Witchy vibes for the win! Every line reads like an incantation, and the result is a book pulsing with magic, one that holds the reader firmly under its spell." --V.E. Schwab, author of The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue

When we get to Dana’s chapters we learn her history. To me, these sections of the book were the most nuanced and fascinating. Pulses with a bold, beguiling magic that feels brand new and classic at the same time. I couldn't put it down." - Karen McManus, author of One of Us Is Lying Billy watched me a little longer. He was too tall for it, bent practically in half to see into the car. i fully expected this to be one of those typical YA-allegories about girls fed up with being vulnerable in the world and taking empowerment into their own witchy hands; girlbonding and messing with magic as an outlet for the rage and dissatisfaction that permeates adolescent girlhood. and there is some of that:This empowers three girls who have felt powerless up until now. There’s a wonderful scene where they are at the lakefront and a couple of jerks start harassing them. They hex one of them so that whenever a vile thought about women enters his mind, insects fly out of his mouth and bite his face. year-old Ivy is heading home from a party with her boyfriend Nate in the middle of the night when a strange woman appears nude, on the road. What follows is a summer that will change life as she knows it forever. And although there is plenty of magic involved, the heart of the story is really the various relationships between the women at its center—the complex dynamics between the three teens who first begin to practice magic together, the lifelong loyalty of two best friends to keeping each other’s secrets, a mother’s desire to protect her daughter at all costs. A mother can be a paring knife, a chisel. She can shape and destroy; I never really thought I’d become one.

He put a hand to his mouth. There was a stripe of white paint over his forearm. “Did he do that to you?” Now her mother and her favorite aunt are missing! The girl she has seen in the woods lurking around her house and the boy next door she has complex feelings insists she broke his heart five years ago. Could she forget something important like this?NO ONE WEAVES FAIRY TALE MAGIC INTO THE MODERN WORLD LIKE MELISSA ALBERT. A truly masterful tale . . . with all the trappings of a classic: immaculate prose, a parallel generational story for the ages, and chills when you least expect them. David Arnold, author of The Electric Kingdom Thank you to Ms. Cat Kenney at Flatiron Books for the eArc copy of this book! Receiving it did in no way affect my review.
