About this deal

Material: Many travel coffee mugs are stainless steel, though our list also includes porcelain, glass and silicone options. Double-walled construction is common with stainless steel mugs, and that can help keep your beverage hot or cold longer. Other materials may not be insulated. If you opt for a glass mug, consider borosilicate glass, which is tempered to prevent shattering with hot liquids and can be more durable if dropped. Porcelain mugs are generally easy to clean, and because the material is nonporous, the mug is unlikely to develop odd flavors. Silicone is a great lightweight option, but it can get warm if it does not have a heat sleeve. The SCAA recognizes home brewers that meet our longstanding rigorous technical requirements. These requirements are based on decades of industry knowledge and research by the Coffee Brewing Center. All SCAA Certified Brewers have met these requirements, which are based generally on proper water temperature, brewing time, and ability to brew within the SCAA Gold Cup recommendations. If a brewer passes all of the tests conducted by the SCAA, that brewer will be recognized as an exemplary home brewer and join the short list of SCAA Certified Brewers. It’s also proved impressively watertight. Slightly frilly features include the strangely dubbed “aroma bowl”, which, according to the manufacturer, allows for a “superior drink interface”. This basically means you can test your drink’s temperature by allowing a small amount to be released. Unlike the high-functioning "adventure" category, these more mug-like mugs had better dishwasher tolerance, but they also offered more immediate disappointment. The 14-ounce Yeti, which I bought in an exciting color called King Crab (and I might call matte tangerine) was so squat as to make me want to use two hands to sip from it. At a bowl-like four inches across, it's too awkward to fit into most car cup holders. In a surprisingly short test, it immediately dribbled through its shut lid when tipped 90 degrees. Pass!

Thermally efficient, the double-walled construction of this reusable travel mug ensures the exterior stays at a hand-safe temperature when the drink inside is hot, and keeps your beverage hot or cold for ages. Keeps a drink hot for up to 5 hours (if pre-warmed). The SCAA only certifies home brewers that meet their rigorous technical requirements to brew a Golden Cup of coffee. According to the SCAA: Stainless Steel double wall insulation does a good job at thermoregulation – keeping drinks hot for up to 5 hours and cold for 12 hours. The perfect companion for your morning commute, the OXO Good Grips Travel Mug makes sipping your own coffee easier, wherever you are. Let it fizz away as the acid and alkaline react – you can then use a cloth to effectively clean the inside of the mug. The stainless steel design means it will keep your drinks hot and cold for a long time – 7 hours hot and 10 hours cold. This travel mug has been designed to fit easily under the permafilter of most home coffee machines without its lid, just lower the drip tray to the ‘tall mug’ position. BPA free.

For years, I've used a Vessel Drinkware travel mug I bought at Seattle's Empire Coffee and Records. The paint eventually flaked, and I ended up chipping it all off entirely to reveal a stainless steel mug that still manages to look pretty sharp. Barring any misfortunes, it has another couple of years left in it. The downside is that the top is fussy to clean, and neither the top nor bottom can go into the dishwasher. Please note that this is when the mug is pre-warmed with hot water, the temperature losses will be more accelerated if the mug is not pre-warmed. Later, I brought the Oxo and Hydro Flask, both three-quarters full of water, up to my little roof patio, and with one in each hand did a wild dance till my arms hurt trying to make them leak with the lids in the closed position. Impressively, they did not. This travel mug has been designed to fit easily under the permafilter of most home coffee machines without its lid, just lower the drip tray to the ‘tall mug’ position.

While “not leaking” wasn't much of a surprise outcome for the Zojirushi and Takeya, the surprise stability of the “less secure” competition certainly nibbles into their market. In fact, it just about undid my adventure-commuter classification system.

In case you’re curious, the specific requirements set forth by the SCAA for brewing perfect, Gold Cup coffee are: While I am used to handwashing the mug, I'd rather not be. As a result, it spends an impressive amount of time in the purgatory pile above the dishwasher and just to the left of the sink, the spot where my wife Elisabeth and I put stuff we're too lazy to clean right away. I also ran a temperature test in my 70-degree-Fahrenheit kitchen, filling each mug with water just off the boil and sealing their lids closed and then returning four hours later to take their temperature. I'd have to bear in mind that the vessels were of different sizes, as a larger amount of water would be able to stay warmer longer, but there were few surprises. The 14-once Yeti, with its wide mouth and thin lid, was alone at the bottom at 125 degrees; warm but no longer hot. A big middle chunk was occupied by the 16-ounce Contigo, unimpressive for the size at 140 degrees; the Hydro Flask at 144 (not bad for a 12-ounce mug); and then three in the sweet spot, the 17-ounce Takeya, and the 16- and 20-ounce Oxos, at 153, 154, and 157 degrees, respectively. The Zojirushis easily took top honors for heat retention, with 173 degrees for the little guy and 180 for the big fella. Travel mugs are designed to be more leak-proof than reusable cups – much more preferable if you’re travelling further or want a hands-free commute.

Make sure the lid is off when you leave it to dry and always give it a wipe with a clean dry cloth to remove excess moisture. Engineered to the highest standards, this flask-style mug will keep its contents hot for up to 2 hours. Their capacity tends to be around 350ml, approximately the size of a regular sized takeaway coffee. Some do have a closable drinking spout but aren’t likely to be fully spill-proof – intended more for transporting drinks only a short distance.
