Deadly sirens join the ranks of strong, smart females in this book, giving it a definite feminist edge." -- Booklist One minute, twenty-four-year-old Sophie Hansa is in a San Francisco alley trying to save the life of the aunt she has never known. The next, she finds herself flung into the warm and salty waters of an unfamiliar world. Glowing moths fall to the waves around her, and the sleek bodies of unseen fish glide against her submerged ankles. Legend of the Star Runner gives readers the best of both worlds, merging thevisual appeal of a graphic novel with text-based storytelling's power to spark imagination. Lilli's Grandpa was inspired by Sir Sean Connery's portrayal of the father of Indiana Jones in The Last Crusade.

The long path to the throne has only just begun for Aelin Galathynius as war looms on the horizon. Loyalties have been broken and bought, friends have been lost and gained, and those who possess magic find themselves at odds with those who don't. A boy and his dog set sail in search of treasure, braving stormy seas, mountains snowy and cold, the forest where the monkeys swing, the swamp where the bullfrogs sing, and other challenging obstacles, before finally reaching the end of their quest—the treasure of Pirate Frank. But there’s a surprise in store when they discover that Pirate Frank is a girl. And no one is going to steal her treasure! Caroline Oresteia is destined for the river. For generations, her family has been called by the river god, who has guided their wherries on countless voyages throughout the Riverlands. At seventeen, Caro has spent years listening to the water, ready to meet her fate. But the river god hasn’t spoken her name yet—and if he hasn’t by now, there’s a chance he never will. But when her father gambles with her very existence, it all may be about to end. Rae Carson meets Outlanderin this epic debut fantasy.

As princess of the island kingdom Visidia, Amora Montara has spent her entire life training to be High Animancer — the master of souls. The rest of the realm can choose their magic, but for Amora, it’s never been a choice. To secure her place as heir to the throne, she must prove her mastery of the monarchy’s dangerous soul magic. In an age when few people travelled and young men might have to work seven-year apprenticeships before they could make an independent living, many were tempted to go to sea anyway, though the life was a tough one. But when Gwen and Olivia are kidnapped by shadowy creatures and taken to a world of flesh-eating sea hags and dangerous Fey, Gwen realizes her mom might have been sane all along.

Sophie doesn't know it yet, but she has just stepped into the middle of a political firestorm, and a conspiracy that could destroy a world she has just discovered… her world, where everyone seems to know who she is, and where she is forbidden to stay. The worst of Rees' crimes of inconsistency, though, was the juxtaposition of some pretty grisly scenes, all things considered, with the rosy view of pirate life, where all men are decent except when riled up by a few bad apples and their apparently magically demonic musical instruments. As for the love story, I'm just thankful it wasn't a major component. Boy and girl grow up together and naturally fall in love. Boy (16) leaves girl (12) for the sea. Over the next 8ish years, they see each other, oh, let's do the math for fun. This is in stark contrast to Witch Child, where there doesn't seem to be a lot of character development at first, but by the end you realize that each character had a very important role, and you want to know more about the characters and their lives. Here, everyone is just flat. A very funny, rhyming story about a boy who always wanted to drive a digger, but is destined to be a pirate like his dad.

But Mabbot—who exerts a curious draw on the chef—is under siege. Hunted by a deadly privateer and plagued by a saboteur hidden onhership, she pushes her crew past exhaustion in her search for the notorious Brass Fox. As Wedgwood begins to sense a method to Mabbot’s madness, he must rely on the bizarre crewmembers he once feared: Mr. Apples, the fearsome giant who loves to knit; Feng and Bai, martial arts masters sworn to defend their captain; and Joshua, the deaf cabin boy who becomes the son Wedgwood never had. But sailing the kingdom holds more wonder — and more peril — than Amora anticipated. A destructive new magic is on the rise, and if Amora is to conquer it, she’ll need to face legendary monsters, cross paths with vengeful mermaids, and deal with a stow-away she never expected… or risk the fate of Visidia and lose the crown forever. I know that this is supposed to be a fun little book, and I think the audience might be aimed at younger ages, but in the end, it felt inconsistent on so many levels that I was just left feeling confused and/or disappointed, depending upon the chapter. The first in the series of The Nine Lives of Furry Purry Beancat, this story follows a cat who wakes up aboard a pirate ship after a catnap. Can this little feline help the captain and crewmates come out victorious over a rival pirate ship in an epic battle at sea?

Children can learn what it takes to be a pirate with this book. Note down all the pirate lingo, abandon toothpaste, get your pirate outfit ready and follow the rules of the sea! The rhyming text takes you through what it means to become a pirate sailing on the sea, and children will love reading it aloud and learning how to get their sea legs. Can Small Saul show these ruffians that despite his gentle spirit, he’s worth his weight in gold? With treasure chests of laughs, Small Saul’s high-seas adventure is a light-hearted celebration of individuality, perseverance and being true to one’s self. Stegosaurus Would NOT Make a Good Pirate As the daughter of a time traveler, Nix has spent sixteen years sweeping across the globe and through the centuries aboard her father’s ship. Modern-day New York City, nineteenth-century Hawaii, other lands seen only in myth and legend—Nix has been to them all. When a boy hears about the treasure of Pirate Frank, he’s determined to find it and bring it home. So, the boy and the dog set sail on an adventure in search of it. They brave rough seas, traverse snowy mountains and explore forests where monkeys live. But when they finally arrive at where the treasure lies, they discover that Pirate Frank is protective of her treasure, and she doesn’t want to share it! When Flinn discovers a pirate hiding in the school supply closet, it’s all aboard, me hearties, for a real live pirate adventure! Captain Stubble needs Flinn’s help to find his stolen ship, but there are some mean pirate dinosaurs on the loose, and Flinn and his friends soon sail into trouble.

In a world divided by meddlesome gods and treacherous oceans, only the Maarin possess the knowledge to cross the Endless Seas. But they have one mandate: East must never meet West. When her demonstration goes awry, Amora is forced to flee. She strikes a deal with Bastian, a mysterious pirate: he’ll help her prove she’s fit to rule, if she’ll help him reclaim his stolen magic. A child bride, Sara Winchester had grown into a winsome beauty, joyfully anticipating the day when her husband Nathan, Marquess of St. James, would return to claim her heart at last. Charmingly innocent, she dismissed the ancient feud that divided Nathan's family from her own...and she was totally unaware of his past exploits as the notorious pirate, Pagan. The man who now stood before her was perplexing, arrogant and powerfully handsome...a warrior-gentleman whose gentle touch aroused her to the wildest, deepest pleasures of love.Unofficially, Kell is a smuggler, servicing people willing to pay for even the smallest glimpses of a world they'll never see. It's a defiant hobby with dangerous consequences, which Kell is now seeing firsthand. On the first day of school, Jake feels nervous and would much rather stay at home and play. His parents encourage him to go into the classroom, where he meets his new teacher, Captain Fox. Jake joins the class as a new crewmate and goes on lots of exciting pirate adventures, all thanks to a little imagination! Henry “Monty” Montague doesn’t care that his roguish passions are far from suitable for the gentleman he was born to be. But as Monty embarks on his grand tour of Europe, his quests for pleasure and vice are in danger of coming to an end. Not only does his father expect him to take over the family’s estate upon his return, but Monty is also nursing an impossible crush on his best friend and traveling companion, Percy. This story was breathtaking. I was riveted and couldn't put it down until I was done. Yes there were parts like in any other book that you think wow can we move on, but it's nothing more than a paragraph that I felt like this and not very often. It is juvenile fiction but the story should captivate anyone and doesn't read as simple as most juvenile fiction. This is a lovely, heartwarming story about a mother’s love, and how she’ll always support her son on his big adventures.
